One may call it a Translation! It does not bother me.
The Telugu version came out of the pen of my respected teacher,
Sri Kandregula Amba Prasadarao of Parlakimedi, Ganjam, Orissa.
idi anuva'damanaDam kamTE, anukaraNa anaDam sababEmO!
What a gem it is in Telugu!
Probably many of you know that Gudipati Venkata Chalam (popularly
known) as Chalam translated Tagore's Gitamjali into Telugu.
I read it cover to cover. I am not comparing Chalam's
translations of Tagore with those of Prasadarao's. But, I like my
teacher's translations of Tagore's poems. Few writers have
attempted to translate Tagore's Gitamjali into Telugu. Some of
them are not as popular as Chalam's. During 1967-70, the poem,
Where the mind is without fear by Tagore was among the selections
of English poetry at the school final class. I remember my
teacher, Sri Prasadarao, had translated it into Telugu. During my
recent visit to India, I asked him for a transcript of that
translation. He took time and copied it for me from his memory.
Read it! This is a rare work that is seldom seen in present day
Telugu literature.
Dr. Ganugula Chiranjeevulu, one of Sri K. Prasadarao mastergAri
favorite students, used to sing this Telugu translation also.
Some of those from the Physics dept. of the Andhra U may remember
Chiranjeevulu also.
