Here are a few instances of some common alankarams. Quoting
from whatever little i got from the school days. (After all,
didnt Shaw say, 'real education starts after one gets out of
school'?) Can someone figure out what alankarams are
they instances of?

padhO klAsu:
1) kaththulato kuthuthukala nuththarinchina nuththamoththamundu...

2) sudhatee noothana madhanA

These lines from a song in 'Sapthapadhi' have already
appeared in some of the early digests. Thought it might be
worth re-presenting them in this context.

As the writer of the piece you are objecting to, I feel that I have
to respond to this. I did not take any offense about your statement.
But Dr. Vemaganti garu, I was only replying to a question of whether
or not people who share the same surname but are unrelated (as they
know it) may intermarry. In that context, I explained the gothram
nomenclature, how lastnames are formed, their significance etc.
Caste, which I do not like to speak about, may enter into
such a discussion. Many (not majority) of the surnames are
caste-dependent. In mentioning the caste, I am only being objective
about it (atleast, I thought so). I am certainly on your side
regarding the caste issue, and am as much against the division of
TANA into TANA and ATA. But being politically correct about this
issue may only push it under the carpet than solve it.

I think you are referring to my article. Looks like my
article got "Bhaskar" garu blazing like a sun (got the pun? :-) ).

JUBV garu, I have not attempted to define the scope of this network.
All I said was that instead of limiting the discussion to Telugu
people, you can post your message on SCI and also request the response
from a wider audience from there.

The naming of children after the bloodline of only the father, is
not particular to Telugus; so I felt that your scheme has relevance
to Telugus as well as to all Indians. To be true, it has relevance to
the entire world. So, I requested you to carry the discussion
on SCI too. I have said that a scheme similar to the one proposed
by you has already been discussed on another forum (soc.feminism)
and requested you to take a look at those discussions too.

BREAD/NORTH SOUTH FOUNDATION

NORTH SOUTH FOUNDATION was incorporated in 1989 as a not-for-
profit and tax exempt entity in Illinois. To implement its programs
a sister organization, BREAD (Basic Research, Education and Development
society) was also incorporated in India. This society awards scholarships
for meritorious but needy, students in India. To gain experience as well
as to better assess the resource requirements, Andhra Pradesh was chosen as
a pilot.

BREAD invites applications for scholarships from the students who
are among the top ten in district, or achieve 95% or above rank in
intermediate, or among top 500 in EAMCET (Medicine), or among top 600 in
EAMCET (Engg), or among top 600 in polytechnic entrance exam, and whose
annual family income less than Rs. 10,000. BREAD awards scholarships to
all those qualified students to help them to continue their higher education.

In the year 1990, eight scholarships were awarded and in 1991,
another thirty new scholarships were awarded. BREAD would like to give
another 30 new scholarships this year in addition to the renewals of old
scholarships. (These scholrships can be renewed by demonstrating continued
academic excellence by the students in their further studies). To achieve
this goal, BREAD needs your help in the form of contributions, or pledges,
or volunteering.

To raise funds, North South Foundation in Illinois is organizing
WALK-A-THON on Sep 13th in Du Page County, IL. NSF is inviting all of you
to participate in this to help needy students in India. Those who wants
to help to NSF Society can send their contributions to the follwing
address.

The reason that they don't encash the cashier's check immediately is
that there are no branches in India of that particular bank to give
the money to the Indian bank immediately. What happened to you is not
peculiar; it will happen to anyone.

Personal checks take about a month to encash; I have been sending
personal checks for the past 2 years to my parents. I find this to be
the cheapest (in terms of commission to the banks) way to send money
to India. the commission is usually Rs.40 or 0.25% of the total money
realized, whichever is greater (atleast, that was the case with State
bank of Hyderabad, Gunfoundry Branch in Hyderabad). Contrast this with
$6 commission NewYork branch of SBI charges for making a rupee draft.

I came to know that some local banks give you *free* American Express
cashier's checks in some states. If your bank is one such, take one
cashier's check for the required dollar amount and send it to India.
Almost all the (Indian) banks honor AMEX checks, and your party in
India can get the money almost over the counter on the same day. This
was suggested on SCI, but my bank doesn't give free AMEX checks, so I
don't vouch for its veracity.

I am posting this on the net instead of Email since I thought it would
be of use to other people too. Chakri garu, if you post this on SCI,
you might get to know other cheaper and quicker ways of transferring
money to India. Just a suggestion, and hope that I am of some help to
you.

Subject: Sending Money to India

This is in reply to someone's enquiry on sending money to India. I did send
quite a bit of money to India. Most of the time I used personal checks. My
father did not have any problem in encashing them. He used to get the
money on the same day. If it is of any help, let me mention that he's
got an account at the SBI. I guess this issue is a bit `subjective' in the
sense that if the bank people know the person encashing the check personally,
they don't create any problems.
Another mode of sending money is thru' American Express Money Orders. They
cost some money(about $0.50). They can be encashed immediately at any bank
(atleast SBI). If the money order is lost in transit, you can always claim
your money back.
Hope this info helps,
Regards,
Srinivas Achanta

Mithrulara !

I was a bit surprised to find that origin of Andhras goes back up to
the ages of Rama and Krishna. Well there was lot of research that was going
on to confirm whether the DHANDAKARANYA area where RAMA spent 12 years of his
VANAVASA is the present AP or not. The latest evidence of Andhra history to
my knowledge goes back to MAHABHARATA period. During the days of KRISHNA
Andhras were famous for wrestling (malla yudha). For those who can recollect
the story of BHAGAVATA (Krishna's childhood) the wrestlers whom KAMSA appointed
to kill KRISHNA were from ANDHRA. They are CHAANUURA and MUSHTIKA. The next
evidence of Andhras dates back to the MAHABHARATHA war. Well guess whom
Andhras sided with in that war? Unfortunately with Duryodhana (KAURAVAS).

After that Andhras had been shattered and then ruled by many rulers. Then comes
the golden era to the Telugu culture during the period of SATHAVAHANAS. In a way
we can say that SATHAVAHANAS were the first Andhra rulers. During their period
Andhras were the most powerful rulers in the INDIAN sub continent. During the
period of Sathavahanas Andhras established trade links with Egypt, Greece,
etc. During their period Andhras captured UJJAIN, PRATHISTHAN (Paithan),
Kalinga (Orissa) and conquered the LAND-IN-BETWEEN-THE-THREE-OCEANS
( Tri-SAMUDRADHIPATI) (200 B.C.). This was the period of KATHASARITSAGAR
(Bhrihat Katha), GAADHA-SAPTA-SATHI.

If some body could add more to this Andhra history, it would more interesting.
