"Mulki", an old word that really brings nostalgia to me! I fasted
several days to get rid of "mulkis" from "our" AP! What a contrast.
Now, I think Hyderabad language is perhaps one of the least
hypocratical in AP (I lived in Hyd bad for 2.5 years). Perhaps I was
more motivated by the culture and peers than by reason. I dont regret
because it gave some taste of politics (our school boy was shot dead
by a CRP man). I can never forget that single word.

Who or what is (was) a mulki ? I've heard this word before; obviously
a highly politically charged subject. Can someone explain ?

Mulki movement was connected with Jai Telangana agitation of 68-69 (???).
There used to be lot of hate in Hyderabad against the people from coastal
andhra/rayalaseema. This was because the telangana people being under Nizam
were less educated and obviously the people from the coastal regions were
able to grab most of the jobs in the new state. They used to call the people
from telangana regions as mulkis ie. from the same mulk/area. Because of
this, Jai Telangana agitation was started by Chenna Reddy and it was very
aggressive around 68-69. I think, PVN was the cheif minister at that time.

Again, because of this agitation, government started some % of jobs for the
people from Telangana. These reservations were called mulki reservations and
were hated by coastal andhra/rayalaseema regions. This led to Jai Andhra
movement. Some more people have got political advantages because of this.
( I dont remember the names ). Jai andhra movement was at its hight around
73-74. Kasu Brahmananda Reddy was the CM at that time.

I also sat on 1 day fast during Jai andhra movement. I remember lot of people
in my village making cries of "jai andhra, jai jai andhra".

OK, my fast was a big showup. We children, had our heavy breakfast before 7AM
and sat in the shamiana. After 10:30, slowly one after other started going
back home and by 12:00 none of the children were left in the shamiana. Infact
some of us who were willing to sit some more time were forced by their elders
to go back home ( not me, I was among the first to go back home!!)

P.S.: This is not intended to hurt anybody's feelings. Corrections in the
details are welcome.

Jawaharlal nehru was reluctant to divide the country on the basis of
language, with a strong conviction that such language based division
will weaken our nationalism. But pressures from several quarters, most
powerful one being the dravidian movement in t.n. led to seperation
of states.

The telangana and andhra movements were for seperation of state not
merely on language basis but on dialect basis. Ultimately, after a
prolonged agitation, the constitution of india was amended to include
some special provisions regarding administration of andhra, telangana
and rayalaseema areas, without actually dividing the state. The mulki
concept acquired legal basis threfore from the constitution. Even today
the university admissions, state government jobs etc are administered
according the mulki status /non-local status.

The Jai Andhra was a rather politically motivated movement. In my opinion
this is the second most violent event in the history of Telugu people
during the past 400 years among an otherwise peaceful telugu population.
The other event being that of the Razakars in Telangana. As for linguistic
distinctions among Indians etc, it must naturally have irked the then Telugu
people that it had often been the Telugu people who had to wantonly
demolish their culture for the cause of Indian nationalism. The movement for
Andhra Pradesh is very old & dates to much before the day of Independence.
It was in the early 1910s that a person by name 'Gurnadham' (dont remember the
complete name) established a forum called 'Andhra Literary Guild' in Kakinada,
where the first proposal for an Andhra independent of Madras state was made.
This cause was relegated to the background when the nationalistic movement
surged up, mostly influenced by Gandhi. There was such intense feeling for
Andhra Rashtram that Nehru became an unpopular leader among the Telugu
people. Infact, he was thrown chappals atleast on two different occassions
when he visited Guntur (, a most befitting treatment in my opinion), upon
which he was supposed to have decided not to visit Andhra anymore.

I remember one little thing narrated by the poet Dr.C.Narayanareddy about
the JaiAndhra movement: that he had composed the song "Telugu jAti manadi,
ninduga velugu jAti manadi...sirulu pongu mana telugu gaddanoo pagulagotta
vaddu.." etc for some NTR's film in the social background of Jai Andhra
movement.
