This is a new series that I have started. This will contain exclusively
Vemana's poems. No ta'tparyam will be provided. Readers can easily
understand the poems with little help.
Take a break from tanda'na TANA and enjoy MANA VEMANA.
Please read this in RIT (Thanks Kanneganti and Ananda Kishore!!!!!!!!!!)

Hi Palana, how are you doing? I have to ask this: WHY DO IT? There are
thousands of vemana satakam books printed in AP and most of vemana's
poems are in AP Telugu text books. As for ta'tparyam...ha! Do we really
need it? What semantics in vemana's poems need further explanation? This is
not a flame. Sometimes I fail to understand simple things.
About veman's poems themselves...why should anyone learn them? No
doubt Vemana's life was very inspiring. Is there some use to them in
our daily life? For instance, a poem like: alpudepudu paluku...which
means an idiot talks louder (what ever adambharamu means) than a
learned one, such as brass to gold [to transcend to our GRE verbal
skills-- brass:gold::fool:??], and convey either scientific or
metaphysical insight, it has to do something with the intrinsic
properties of metals and neurons. I doubt Vemana is talking about
densities (of metals or people's brains) here. He is comparing the dB
levels of the sounds they make. So what if I twisted the original and
made-up something like this:
A net-man (like me) talks louder than a scientist indoors
The later is as weak as metal compared to fiber-glass
(I can spend a few more hours to make it rhyme in telugu and all that
neat stuff; but my guess is Vemana didn't care for rhymes; he went after
simple words and deeper meanings, but then, was he misunderstanding?)
Or is Vemana going after the economic value of gold vs. brass? What if
the gold had more copper than gold (yeah, gold is an alloy too)? So did
Vemana mean a 24 kt. pure gold?
Anyway, not to miss the obvious point: the poet was using his right to
comment on people as he wishes. So anything anyone wrote like a poem,
is potentially a poem. So what? And who cares for it? I don't think
culture follows from poetry. However, changes and awareness can occur
from poetry. So it is not enough for Telugus overseas to read Vemana's
poetry. They should also learn its effects on the then casteist (even
more than at present) society.
By the way, part of this commentary has to do with my own frustration with
a satakam, I once attempted to write. After one write up, I regretted for
having started one. I think, people can potentially consider you insane
for writing such things. It is much easier to let it rot than deal with
the consequences (if at all). After all, who wants one more non-scientific
(including psychologically unproven -- such as sanity checks) treatise of
society and people which defy all sorts of "final analyses," because they
evolve constantly, even as the writer is writing, polishing his skills,
changing papers on his type-writer.
Anyway, I had to pitch in my 2cents.
