At Su-Darshan Art Gallery, Pune.

A rare opportunity to glimpse at those moments when the history of
contemporary Indian art was made.

On display are more than 35 rare paintings from the archives of the Sir
J J School of Art as well as the Directorate of Art, Mumbai.

The soil of Maharashtra has bred innumerable prestigious institutions
and academies. One of the first among them is the Sir J J School of
Art, Mumbai, with its outstanding contribution to the history of Indian
art for almost 150 years. It has borne many masters of contemporary
Indian art whose names today stand high on the list of internationally
acclaimed artists and creators.

Though we may sometimes get an opportunity to view the esteemed works
of these masters elsewhere, their works acquire a special significance
when they are considered as part of J J School of Art collection. This
fine collection of works is eloquent praise of the generations of
masters that have been moulded by the J J School of Art. These works
have stood witness to the creative beginnings of a many a contemporary
master of our country. A choice selection of these works are leaving
the premises of the art school after such a long time that for every ex
student re-experiencing these paintings is sure to be very touching
trip down memory lane.

The work of such institutions achieves fame and glory, but its
importance and its status in the contemporary social context often
remains unknown to the common man. Bringing these works to the public
is another way of opening wide the doors of the J J School of Art to
those who dare not otherwise cross its portals. This is also an
endeavor to put salve on the oft-repeated arguments about the Art
World's elitism.

The Masters, whose works are being showcased in this exhibition have
all been students of J J School of Art, with the exception M R
Acharekar who though never a student, taught at the school for a
certain period of time. (He was also a prominent art director of Hindi
cinema). Most of them had completed their education in the
pre-independence era and were influenced by British styles and
techniques. Those were times when the tug of war between the Indian and
the European School was a major subject of debate. Both these are amply
represented in this exhibition.
