It was really sad to hear about Datta Samant's murder in Mumbai.
Some gunmen sprayed bullets in his head and upper body and then
fled. I wonder who would do such a cowardly thing? I am sure he
must have made a lot of enemies over the past few decades. He
is well known for carrying out a long strike in the textile
industry in early 80's.

Can someone shed more light on why anyone would want to kill him?
What motive could they have had? Did he have any known enemies?
And what will be the impact of this murder on the workers and
the union movement in India?

Let us all pray that may his soul rest in peace.

Best wishes,
Gentleman.

The BBC gave him almost 5 minutes yesterday (I didn't know he was
still that important). According to them, the police are saying
nothing, but the BBC reporter speculated that it looked like a
contract murder. He further said that Datta Samant was opposed to
the sale of the lands on which the closed textile mills stand. So
that could be the reason why he was killed.

Ironically, the mills were closed in large part because of his strike,
which turned out to be the wrong tactic at the wrong time from the
standpoint of mill workers.

Initial press reports have suggested the killing could be related
to land war going on in bombay. With price of real estate sky rocketting
criminals and polititions are active taking sides with builders,
using muscle power, extortion to get properties vacated, so
huge profits can be made by selling them.
Most of the mill owners in bombay who own huge lands on which
the mills stand, are looking to closing the mills and selling
the land to builders at fantastic prices. Labor unions are in the
way and won't let them do it. Data Samant's union prevented
many of these closures.
Maybe some builder was looking to sell the mill land for 200
crores, so he paid 4 crores to get rid of Samant.

Shiv sena is also heavily involved in this racket.

Another reason could be he was knocked out by Thackeray's shiv sena.
Shiv Sena stands to gain by getting control over the unions.

The articles at India News network were quite informative.
You might want to have a look at those.
