Mananiya Chamanlalji (1920 - 2003)
With profound grief and sorrow, I am reporting the
passing away of Mananiya Chamanlalji. we lost our mentor
on 10 February, 2003 at 20:45 (IST) when he breathed his
last at Bhakti Vedanta Hospital, Mumbai amid chantings of
Bhagvadgita. He was born in Salli village of Sialkot in
pre-partition Punjab on 25 March 1920. The eldest child
of the family, Mananiya Chamanlalji was drawn towards the
Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh at a very early age of
seventeen. A very bright and genius Chamanlalji secured
Gold Medal in M Sc Botany in 1942. Renouncing all
comforts and big career, he became Pracharak that very
year at Kullu. In 1945 Thakur Ramsinghji sent him to
Lahore followed by a stint as Karyalaya Pramukh at
Jullundhar in 1947. With his responsible job, he excelled
in expanding the Sangh in his region.
By the Spring of 1948, Mananiya Chamanlalji, under the
guidance of Mananiya Madhavraoji started helping
Swayamsevaks going overseas in all possible manners. In a
few years time, the seeds of Vishwa Vibhag came into
being with Ma.Chamanlalji. Since 1948, he remained in
Delhi and was quite instrumental in setting up and
expanding of the Keshav Kunj, Jhandewalan where a
library, an archive and guest rooms were established. He
was so much involved in building up such attractions that
he almost became a synonym of Keshav Kunj .
Man. Chamanlalji was a spirit behind the publication of a
number of books which reflect the zeal of a Swayamsewak,
the fire of a strong-willed person, and hard work of
dedication to the Sangh.
His efforts resulted in the creation of a great awareness
among the Hindus abroad. Mananiya Chamanlalji visited
abroad mainly on three occasions (including the one in
1997 accompanying the Sarsanghchalak) which covered
several countries such as Kenya, Mauritius and South
Africa( the Mauritius President Sir Anirood Jugunnath
being his personal friend), UK, France, the Netherlands,
Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal and Sri
Lanka.
Mananiya Chamanlalji was the embodiment of plain and
simple life of an unscaled height. With simplest of the
simple clothes, he was a great soul walking around Delhi,
equally loved by poor, rich and powerful. He surpassed
all records in establishing human bondage by writing
hundreds of letters to the people in India and abroad. A
self effacing, compassionate, and highly humble
Chamanlalji will be ever remembered for his serene,
shining and supportive smile which captured the hearts of
thousands of his admirers throughout the globe.
Everybody who met Chamanlalji was bound to be influenced
by his affectionate approach and by his wits and smile.
People who met him once carried the memories of that
meeting for the lifetime. P.P. Sarsanghchalak Ma.
Sudarshanji, Prime Minister Ma. A.B. Vajpayee, Dy. Prime
Minister Shri L. K. Advani and many of their cabinet
ministers were at Keshav Kunj, Jhandewala to pay their
homage to Chamanlalji. Vice President of Bharat Shri
Bhairo Singh Shekhawatji paid floral tribute at Nigambodh
Ghat just before the cremation.
A book on the life of Ma. Chamanlalji will be complied
under the guidance of Ma. H. V. Seshadriji. Those who
wish to contribute to this through their memoirs,
experiences and photographs are requested to send the
