I am a student of linguistics in Stuttgart, Germany, and I have to write
about the influence of gender to a language. in germany (and western
world) the patriachalic system, this means the masculin gender,
influence the language. For example, the plural word for many people,
including female, is a masculine word. Masculin words are used for both
gender, feminine words only for feminine. My question to you: I have
heard about the Nayars of Kerala, this should be a matriarchy system. Is
this right, do you know something about them, and have they their own
language, it must be Malayalam. How produce this language gender and
plural forms??? Which gender is dominating???
Please send answers to: wo...@studbox.uni-stuttgart.de
Thank a lot
Britta

Well, most of us Nayars eventually get beaten up by our wives so that
answers the domination question.

Er, beaten did you say? Don't you mean whipped (as in domination)
:-)

That's sort of a misconception, actually. Nairs (Nayars) were
Matrilineal, in the sense that family names and property followed
maternal descent. The head of the family (karaNavar) was always the
eldest male. Power to run the family and manage it's finances and
property was traditionally in the hands of the karaNavar.

Legally, the matrilineal system has been abolished, and property now
passes from father to son. Many families still follow maternal
descent for family names.

Well, to answer the question, Malayalam doesn't have nominal gender
where it doesn't need to. Turnips, desks, and chairs are of neuter
gender. Male humans are masculine, female humans are feminine.
Other species are usually referred to in the neuter gender, atleast
in the areas I grew up. The plural is common to both genders.

Karthik

This has got nothing to do with Nayars (or Nair's).

Women will always try to dominate men in their family life and screw up
peace and happiness.

Why do they (women) think that they should control every aspects of their
partner's life? It is disgusting!

Only mallu women try to control their husbands, because mallu men are
wimps. Most of them marry women who are more educated than them and mostly
the wife will be of a better family background. When the wife is from a
richer family and equally or more educated and has paid a huge dowry to marry
a wimpy man, she looks at him with contempt and tries to control and
disrespect him.

May be because the women exercised control over their men for centuries. That
control would have started precisely during the rule of kings and brahmins.
