Following my submission last night, I now enclose a copy of the Vaz
genealogy as I know it to this day.

Extract as submitted to the Goa-net-digest #101

I am a direct descendent of Manuel Vaz born 21 September 1805 possibly in
Goa or Cochin. I have been trying to trace my family tree for over two years
and am having limited success. At this stage I have managed to make contact
with some relatives that have settled in Ahmedabad. They are descendants of
one of Manuel Vaz's children. I would be very greatful if anyone on this net
could offer some advise or point me in the right direction with respect to
locating members from Manuel Vaz's line. I will list below names and dates
that I have extracted from family records found in Penang Malaysia.

The Vaz Family history

Manuel Vaz born 21 September 1805 married Isabella Vaz (nee ? ) born 3
August 1811. They had as follows:

Name: Date of birth
Joanna Lizabeth Vaz 10-11-1830
Edward Vaz 15-3-1833
Anthony Vaz 17-3-1835
Manuel Vaz 07-12-1836 follows under (I) below.
Francis Vaz 01-9-1838
Teresa Vaz 16-6-1840
Isabella Vaz 16-11-1841
Samuel Vaz 06-11-1843
George Vaz 27-3-1846
Captain Peter Vaz 01-01-1849 follows under (II) below.
James Vaz 12-12-1850
Richard Vaz 23-5-1858

(The above dates were extracted from a one page typed document with the
heading " The Family of Manuel and Isabella Vaz of British Cochin" We do not
know who prepared the document).

(I)
Manuel Vaz born 23-5-1857 possibly in British Cochin and died on 23-11-1937
in Ahmedabad, Gujerat, India. married to Elizabeth Vaz (nee ?) Manuel Vaz
was an Engineer on board the ship "Chanda" or "Chandra" owned by the British
India Company. The only known child to date follows:

Captain Peter Vaz born 01-01-1849 in British Cochin and died on 20-5-1931 in
Penang Malaysia, married Mary Martha Dragon in Penang, Malaysia. Captain Vaz
lived in British Cochin at no: 7 Lilly Road or Street until he left for
Penang. (From discussions I have had with Rev. Father Korula of St. Francis
Church in Fort Cochin, I understand the street numbers have been changed
which has made it impossible to date to identify the exact house Captain
Vaz lived in. Father Korula advises that most houses in Lilly St are very
old suggesting that the house in question may still be standing. They had
the following children all born in Penang Malaysia, at that time a British
Settlement:

Name Date of birth
Isabella Vaz 27-1-1884

(III)
Richard Manuel Vaz born 23-5-1857 in unknown, and died 23-11-1937 in
Ahmedabad, married unknown to date. Richard Vaz worked at the Swadeshi
Cotton Mills around 1919. I have a letter that was written to Richard Vaz
from an officer of Lord Inchcape of The British India Company expressing
Lord Inchcape's regret on hearing of the passing of Richard's father, Manuel
Vaz. refer (I) above. It was through this letter and the Swadeshi Mills that
I found this line of the family. It has been the first and only known

Summary
My contact with the sub-continent is now purely with Merwyn Vaz (VII) whom I
found via letters etc left with some of my mothers sistersinPenang Malaysia.
I am having great difficulty making any further progress and would
appreciate any help either with respect to leads, possible contacts or what
ever. i am trying Goa as I understand the Vaz name does exists in Goa.
Whilst having been told that my ancestors came from Cochin, I feel they may
have originally left Goa as there is no Vaz trace of any Vaz in Cochin that
I have been able to establish. Friends have search throught the Doop Boek
which apparently lists all births etc in Cochin in the relevant times with
no success. Perhaps I am wrong.

I could go on and on. Should any one be able to assist in any way possible,
please do so.
