Interesting piece of news from Deccan Herald. Kumble's feat is great,
alright, but is this going a little overboard?

Oriental Circle to be named after Kumble

BANGALORE, Feb 12 (DHNS)

Naming prominent junctions in Bangalore City after eminent litterateurs,
freedom fighters and others is passe. It`s now a cricketer`s turn.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has decided to rename Oriental Circle on
M G Road here as Anil Kumble circle in recognition of the Indian
cricketer`s
10-wicket haul in the second innings of the second Test match against
Pakistan in New Delhi recently.

Participating in the meet-the- press programme organised by the
Bangalore
Reporters` Guild here today, Mayor K H N Simha said the renaming
ceremony
would be held during the final of the triangular cricket series
involving
India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium here
in April.

Mr Simha said the BMP council would pass a resolution to rename the
circle
at its next meeting.

FELICITATION: The mayor also said that Rs.1 lakh cash award would be
presented to the cricketer during the felicitation function at Mayo Hall
tomorrow. The BMP has hosted a lunch too for Kumble in recognition of
his
feat.

Indeed. But I would be more happy if a honest clean cricketer like Kumble
gets this honour, instead of a rotten politician. After all Kumble is more
dearer to the Indian heart than any politician.

Now *that* is something I cannot disagree with! However, I feel that it is
too early in Kumble's life, and indeed in his cricketing career, to name a
circle after him. If a deserving cricketer has to be honored in this
manner, there are plenty of other accomplished stars of yesteryears in
Karnataka. I understand that Kumble is a very humble person, I just hope he
doesn't let his success and all the heaps of adulation go to his head like
some cricketers are known to have. Be that as it may, I am really proud of
the important role our Karnataka stars play in the Indian cricket team.

I agree.

Interestingly, it was not Kumble, but Srinath and Prasad who played a major
role in the first innings of Pakistan in the on going Calcutta cricket test!
Cricket is a great leveller, isn't it? Be it Kumble or Srinath or Prasad,
it is a kannadiga who is making news in cricket circles these days, and
that is really heartening.

But not surprisingly, though, because the quickies were expected to have
the advantage early on.

Yes, it is. The Kannadiga trio have their hands full for the third day's play.
Let's hope the bowlers repeat the first innings performance.

Incidentally, here is the link for the official Karnataka cricket home page:
http://www.karnatakacricket.org/
I don't remember whether I picked it up here or on RSC.

Thanks for the link. I did not know that KSCA had a link of their own.
Interesting that KSCA should conduct a survey about "Sachin opening in tests". I
wish they would atleast provide us with the scores of the Karnataka Vs Haryana
Ranji trophy in progress now (actually just concluded).

I am happy though that they have a pretty nice page.

Does anybody know personal details about Rahul Dravid.

I mean, whether he is a Kannadiga ?, if not then originally from which place ?
Education etc..

Rahul Dravid was born in Indore and I believe that's where his family was,
before moving to Bangalore. However, I believe his "mother tongue" is not
Kannada, I think it is Tamil but I could be mistaken. In any case, he has
been in Bangalore a long time (and developed his cricket there), so for all
practical purposes he is a Kannadiga. He got his degree from St. Joseph's,
Commerce.

Thanks for the clarification. From Dravid's profile that I read I knew
that his uncle *played* for the Holkars, but I didn't know that 'he is from
the family of Holkars.' I vaguely recall reading that his family adopted the
last name 'Dravid' because they were originally from Tamil Nadu and didn't
have any other last name. Of course, that may have been misinformation. Also,
his mother's family may be Marathi speaking.

Dravid is a surname amongst the deshastha brahmanas of mahrashtra. The reason for this
surname might be that they migrated long long ago from Tamil nadu. There are brahmins
in Andhra who migrated from Tamil nadu upon the marriage of a chola princess to the
prince of Vengi (?) they are still called Dravid brahmins. Ofcourse we do also have
the reverse effect of deshastha brahmans from Maharashtra migrating to the south
starting with Shahaji Raje's times.

Which one of the events are u referring to ?. I will have to check references for the
david brahmans of andhra, but as for Shahaji's times it was around mid 1600s for an exact
date I will have to look up a book. Shahaji's jagir was headquatered at Bangalore, he
then left it to his son Venkoji (Shivaji's step brother). Venkoji later conquered
Thanjavur from the
telugu nayaks and slowly the centre of maratha power in the south moved to Thanjavur, the
number of maharashtrians brahmins or otherwise who settled in the Thanjavur area is
pretty high.

Thanks for your kind answer, Nikhil. The mid 1600s is
precise enough for me, don't bother looking it up.
