No! he plays mrudangam and is a student of Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer.
This is really funny. Sri Sivan is his maternal side grand father. How can
he have Papanasam in his name? Infact, Sri Sivan himself is not from
Papanasam. He is from a place called Polakam in Kerala. I have no idea
as to why he prefixes his name with "Papanasam". For credibility reasons?
May be. But he does not need that. Infact, he sings pretty well.

perhaps it may be for name association and recognition. Same can be
said of sri rAjkumAr bhArati, who is a darned good singer and great
grandson of bhAratiyAr. It gives US a reason to identify them with the
rich heritage they have in their families, be it on the maternal or
paternal side. I think pApanAsam ashOk ramaNi is an excellent singer
with a pleasnt voice. It is heeartening to see that the baton of
carnAtic music is in the hands of many such capable youth.

Unfortunately there was a 'typo' in the initial posting done by
Aravinda, listing him as a violinist. It is K.R.Ganesh, the mridangist
coming with Vedavalli is the son of Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer. Please
refer to the Final Schedule posted by me, a couple of days after
Aravinda's posting, for the full and correct schedule of the
Cleveland Festival.
If you are interested in organizing a concert by Asok Ramani, or
Vedavalli or Dr.Ramani, please give me a call at 416-425-8720.
Thanks
Venkataraman
Before anyone else does I would like to copyright (of course if one
can) the following words -- Tabalist, sitarist, mandolinist etc etc. ;)
On an unrelated note -- I think its high time Webster's comes out with
an Indian-English dictionary.
No harm intended, Mr. Venkataraman .
Take it easy..
Prakash.

I guess the rumours were not totally false, since it is smaller than last
years. Let us hope that the 20th Aradhana (next year) can be suitably grand.
