The children were not adopted, they were created in a test tube using
sperm and eggs purchased from white donors. Although the sale of live
children is illegal under U.S. law, it is legal to purchase all the
ingredients to make a child: sperm, egg, and rented uterus.
While Debbie Rowe acted as surrogate uterus, it is not known whether
she actually donated the eggs for the first two children. California
law does not necessarily recognize the surrogate as the legal
'mother,' but she claimed the children as her own with no legal
challenge. Since Michael Jackson was married to Rowe when the
children were hatched, he is recognized as the legal father. (The law
usually allows two years to challenge paternity, and presumably
maternity). The status of the youngest child is murky, since MJ was
not married to the anonymous surrogate, but it has been over two
years.
But you might ask Lisa Marie in one of her semi-lucid moments.
