Minneapolis-Michael Medin pleaded guilty this afternoon (April 24) to 1st
degree murder it he death of Pa Nhia lor, a 13 year old Hmong girl killed last
September in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Medin pleaded guilty at a pre-trail court appearance this afternoon in front of
Judge Thomas Carey. Medin’s trail was scheduled to begin on Monday, April 26.

In Minnesota, 1st degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. Medin will
not be eligible for parole for at least 30 years. His formal sentencing is
scheduled for July 7 at 8:30.

Michael Medin committed vicious, intentional, premeditated murder, said
Hennepin County Attorny Klobuchar. "As a consequence, he is receiving the most
serious sentence allowed my Minnesota law."

On the night of Sept. 19, 1998, 13 year old Pa Nia Lor of St. Paul met Medin
and two other young men in Brooklyn Park. They took her to a park, where she
was raped, stabbed and choked. Medin and one of the men then took her to a
nearby garage, wher they suffocated her with plastic bags tied over her head.

A few hours after the murder, Medin called up Nickie Frank and Stacy Koener and
asked for their help in hiding the body. They drove to Sherburne County and
dumped Pa Nhia Lor’s body in a wooded area.

In February, Nickie Frank and Stacy Koerner pleaded guilty to the felony charge
of accomplice after the fact for helping Medin move and hide Pa Nhia Lor’s
body. Both women were sentenced on April 7 to serve one year in the Hennepin
County Adult Detention Center as well as 10 years probation.

Two other individuals are awaiting trial: Johnnie Rhodes is charged with 1st
degree criminal sexual conduct. His trail is scheduled to start May 19.

Shea Holt is charged with 1st degree murder and kidnapping. His trial is
schedules to start July 6.

Pa Nhia Lor’s mother-Mai Houa Vang, two older sisters, her older brother and a
brother-in-law as well as St. Paul attorney Sia Lor were in attendance. Unlike
today, Pa Nhia's mother will have an chance to speak on July 7 at the
sentencing.

A while ago, I tried to get the participants of SCH to have a discussion on
the death penalty. It didn't get very far.

I wonder how people feel about this case. Here, you have an innocent girl
raped and murdered. The perpetrator gets a life sentence. Has justice been
served?

Has justice been served? The answer to it lies under the justice system in
the state. To many of us, justice means if you caused death to someone,
you should be put to death too. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way
in this justice system, especially in MN and many other states. Minnesota
is one of the many states that doesn't have a death penalty. Whether
justice is served or not, life in prison is the highest penalty that we
can get in Lor's case in Minnesota.
