Just to things in perspective, California last year, 2014, is basically producing, GPD wise, at Russia's projected GDP for the year 2030.

I think California should really secede from the Union, since it is giving so much of its productivity to southern, red states that TALK ABOUT pulling your own boots strap but NEVER DO.... states that pretend to hate the federal government quite much but states that rely more heavily on it, on a per capita basis, than other states in the east, west, or north...

If you notice that Washington State, in the northwest... its minimum wage is approaching $15.00 an hour --- and by that southern states would label it a socialist state where everyone OUTSIDE of it is contributing to its welfare state --- and yet it is also one of the blue states that GIVES more of its products to OTHER STATES than what it receives from them in tax dollars...

Naturally deduced: if you are backward, stingy, and with minimally educated citizens, ON AVERAGE, you'd also receive MORE FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT than what you put in, in terms of taxes... and that is exactly what MOST red states in the South do... what they ARE... they are receiving more from the federal government than what they give to it...

On the chart below, you see that, from CALIFORNIA on down, there are 14 states that contribute MORE to the Federal government than what they get in return...

There are roughly FIVE states that are politically RED STATES (Wyoming, Oklahoma, Utah, Kansas, and Nebraska... there are a few that are called "purple" because they flip between Democratic and Republicans in every few federal elections, so they are NOT reliable RED or BLUE... like Washington, California, New York, Massachusetts, etc. being RELIABLE BLUE and Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. being RELIABLE RED)... but these 5 states ALSO CONTRIBUTE MORE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT than what they receive in return.

But Wyoming has 570,000 people... Oklahoma with 3.8M, ...Utah, with 2.8M, ... Kansas, 2.9M, ... and Nebraska, 1.8M.... ALL TOGETHER being just slightly larger than the city of New York... so these are really not states that contribute THAT MUCH to the OVER-ALL FEDERAL BUDGETS... although it is NICE to be able to say there are FIVE RELIABLY RED STATES that give MORE to the federal government than what they get out of it...
