Hmong (Ebonics) Slang Dictionary:
1. Qaij - (N-Kai): meaning a piece of meat: Often refered to as a
girl.
For example: (Hey, koj nqai nes?) translates to (Hey, Where's your
girl?)
2. Kanso: meaning cancel: Often referred to when you want to cancel
someone or an appointment. For example: (Kanso koj os!) translates to
(Man...forget you!)
3. Npua - (M-Pua): meaning a pig which reffers to cops: Often used
when you speed and see a cop. For example: (Duj...ceemfaaj...npua os!)
translates to (Dude...watch out! Pig)
4. Duj: means Dude: It speaks for itself - we just don't say it
clearly.
5. Hem Nyuj - (Hey-New-yoob)- meaning ugly: This is an old school word
to rip on someone. You so ugly you scare the cows!
6. Lwj Liam - (Lu-Li-as) - this word is used to add effects to your
word or sentence. (for example: zoo nkauj translates to pretty) but
(zoo nkauj lwj-liam means whooah! gorgeous)
7. Maij or Maiv - Has two meanings a girl or someone pretty. Since
almost every Hmong girls name Mai, guys these days just call them
Mai's. Simple.
For example: (Hey, mej lub zoj puas muaj Mai coob?) translates to
(Hey, are there a lot of girls at your village or town?)
8. Twib or Tuab - (Twee): meaning thick. A slang often used when you
see a cute chunky person.
For example: (Man, taub twib lwj-lias!) translates to (Man, Dude is
thick as ever!)
9. (s) - Adding an (s) to every word makes it sound ghetto.
For example: (Hey, did you take my money? - Never(s).
10. Kes lees - (K-lengs): a word made up for Ice-Cream. Growing up we
would hear the ice-cream truck and run after it saying kes lees...kes
lees!!! Wait for me!.
11. Xuam Nyuab - (Soua-n-yua): meaning "I don't care!".
12. Tsi Hub Xwv - (Chi-Hu-Sue): meaning "I don't care-with a
passion!".
...I think #12 is totally SLANG!!!

Uam-same as onj.

Actually, these words are not much taboo as I first thought. They all
carried on the origine meaning. The spelling may have been modified to
the new Hmong speaking-US speaking sound but I still see where the
original word come from, and many I can still related to the old
timer's (speaking tone) world.
e.g. #12. is a borrow word for Lao or Thai language wich is carried a
similar meaning in English.
To really find new Hmong slong lingo go to
and or find some Hmong American Artist (song writers - Paradise,
Sounder or listen to Touyer Xiong's comedies.. etc... ) they are
truely used mixed words that I can hardly connect to it.

Vurj, Onj, they all look like a pronuciation quide but I can hardly
make the sound and make any sense from them... or perhaps these
words/lingo are truely the new Hmong idiom. Let me try to re-arrange
your writting.
Ntsaum nce hauvsab = so sweet. thisn't bad, sine ant like sweet.
Ntxim nyaum = very sexy. hmm... do it come from ntxim nyom? not bad if
it is.
Vurj = over exagerate. totaly blow me up, have no clue. But if Vurj =
Vawb, like in "awb vawb, vawb vawb" then it is not bad ether.
Onj = clumsy, retard, dumb etc.. again if Onj is a new pronunce for
'uam' then it is fine.
If my descriptions above are right, then those words are not new
either, the sound may be twisted to the new Hmong tone but the root
word still belong to the old timers (they are all old classic, baby
words).

These are words that we used the most when I was teenager( liab).
1. maiv niam = yog cov hluas nkauj ua kawm ntawv thiab nyob hau vaj
hau tsev.(home girl)
2. txawm kuam = No mas yog cov ua nyiam nrog peb cov laib mus ub mus
no. Tsis nyob hau tev.
3. npwb = rog. Ntu no koj tus miav niam npwb heev lawm.
4. npeeb = zoo nkauj. Vuag! thaub koj tus txawm kuam koj npeeb heev.

Thank you both for responding to this thread. when I first visited
this Hmong Slang Dictionary, I had a great laugh at how cute it was
but it was funnier reading both of your responses.
I think over the past 2 decades Hmong have become so mixed that I
believe we would more comedians in the future...
Just to top on things. A group of my friends and I often commenting a
cool guy as AWBkauspua!!!

Ntsaum nce hauvsab is a direct translation from the Thai "muad keun
hua cai". I heard ntxim nyaum the first time about 15 years ago from
my cousin. We all know that nyom could be either a noun meaning grass
an infinitive verb to bend. If nyom were intended to be the verb,
then it would be too obvious, no slang there. However, if nyaum were
use, it convey an irony/metaphor quality in there somewhere too. I've
first heard vurj from a Thai friend back in the early 90's. Actually,
vurj is the ending syllable of the English word over. So instead of
saying over, ver/vurj was it. We all know that onj has Thai origin of
being like an immature child. Uam is the only word that I think may
truly be a Hmong origin. Heard in mainly in Ban Vinai in the early
early eighties.
I've asked questions regard to Mong slang terms at the hmong-lg site
too. The newest ones I've heard and don't know what their meanings
are txhuam nav, txav nyom, coj kaslasvav. A long while back, I've
asked about why not follow the Thai example of using the taste, sweet,
sour, bitter, etc. However, by doing that, only the Hmong in Thailand
would know what those words: qaub, ntsim, dlaw, etc. to mean. So in
the end, slang is still only language of an exclusive group.
