My wife Earnie wants some information about instruction in Hawaiian
quilting on Maui. She knows how to sew and all that, but is particularly
interested in the Hawaiian patterns that are traditional. She needs to
know more about techniques of quilting used in Hawai`i, though quilt
making is a long tradition in her family on the mainland.
Any help in orienting her would be most appreciated.
Aloha,
David

Aloha no David,
Knowing you spend most of your time in Kahana-side of Maui...
Check out "Rhonda's Quilts" in the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali.
(Phone (808)677-7660) She has quilting classes and is a very
talented quilter.
When I made my first two quilts, while I lived on Maui,
I got some great help on Maui from the women at
"Sew Special" in the Kaahumanu Mall in Kahului.
Plus they were able to get me contact with others
that shared my interests. Phone (808) 877-6128.
If Earnie has the time we should get together and
I'll introduce you to my Aunty Althea Serrao on Oahu.
One of the great Masters of Hawaiian Quilting with
Uncle John Serrao! Check out her website at
http://www.poakalani.com/
Hope this helps... hope to see you again on your
next visit!
Malama,
Darrell

Mahalo Makani,
I have sent this on to Earnie at her own e-mail address. Yeah, that's how
we communicate. <g>
I'm sure she would like to know Auntie Violet, and she won't mind the
short trek from the West Side.

This is a great web page! (Happens to be one of my favorite subjects,
too) You will see that Poakalani and John Serrao have just completed a
book called "Hawaiian Quilting, a Spiritual Experience". I recently
ordered mine, and can highly recommend it. It doesn't cover everything
you need to know about making Hawaiian quilts, but it is loaded with
alot of fascinating history and lore of Hawaiian quilts. My favorite is,
if you're going to give away a quilt that you've made, be sure you sleep
under it one night first.

Darrell, you are beyond amazing! I am so impressed to learn that you have
made (plural) quiltsssss. I've done a pillow and some small pieces. I'm
awed! (And bloodied!)

Fo' real Poakalani's your Aunty? I took some classes with her and her
husband years ago. Fabulous! I was at a gathering that included several
quilters last weekend and they'd just gotten their copies of Aunty's new
book and were just in heaven. I'm delighted to have this convenient link
to go order my own.
Gosh, it would be a lot easier to play 6 Degrees of Darrell Travis than
Kevin Bacon, yeah?

I sent this one on to Earnie. She was very excited at the prospect of
getting some practical knowledge.

Very tempting, Darrell, and we'll definitely take you up on this offer
someday soon. We're not sure we'll get to Honolulu in December and
January, but there's always June, eh? <g>

Well --- if there were a picnic.... (Heh!)
