No huhu, get Magoo's

For some reason the line keeps playing in my head. Any other notable
old slogans or jingles keep turning laps in the brain?

Also a flashback to Lippy Espinda. What was it that he was famous for
saying? Or was it Lucky Luck? Doubt you find that stuff in Google
search.

I learned recently that "Smythe, not Smith; Smythe, not Smith; Smythe
the Smoooooother Moooovers!" was here, too. Grew up thinking they were a
Bay Area company.

But speaking of jingles...have you noticed that EVERY little diner,
dentist, and dating service has to have a TV commercial with a jingle
lately? Sappy lyric, utterly forgettable tune. It's like there's a
McJingle machine for rent somewhere. Combination of one of those
story-writing web sites and a drum machine.

I like Zippy's BIM-BAM BOOM sound effect. Wow. A logo SOUND EFFECT!! And
like Pavlov's dogs, you hear that sound and you already know, NEXT STOP
ZIPPY'S.

The gaps in my memory yikes.

I always associated Lucky Luck with beer. Lucky Lager was popular back
then right? There was Primo. Falstaff. Olympia pushed on Let's Go
Fishing. After that the Coors craze hit. Then the imported stuff like
Heineken.

The "old" timers may remember this:

"He's working quietly... and effectively to do what is best in Hawai'i." --
George Ariyoshi

He did alright... work quietly. He and his son kicked Hawaiians off of Sand
Island.

"hele on bruddah" - Lippy Espinda - also popularized and may have
created the "shaka" sign.

"Quiet & Effective" - George Ariyoshi campaign

"Fasi gets the job done" - Frank Fasi campaign

"Redondo's Sausage Turns Me On' - for Redondos, I believe Ted Sax did
the voiceover.

"on the coconut wireless..." - slogan used for KGMB radio / J. Aku

"One of the good things about Hawaii, is wonderful KGMB" - KGMB TV
before the news... was changed for a while to "colorful KGMB" when they
first started broadcasting in color.

"First Hawaiian, the bank that says 'Yes'" - First Hawaiian Bank

"I listen to the new sound of QFM" - KGMQ FM radio, early 1970s

"Go now Hawaii, Why Pay More?" - Malcolm Love for Consumer Tire Warehouse

"Thank You Very Much" - Lex Brodie for Lex Brodie's tire shops

"Thumbs Up Hawaii" - ill fated feel good campaign promoted by big
business and state government in the mid 1990s.

Yeah, that brings it back. Standing in front the used car lot.

Since you listed a Democrat, I'll throw in a Republican. The one
jingle that might not actually qualify to be a jingle was the four tone
"Cros-by and Mills"

That's the song that Hanneman sung.

Don't even remember that one. Early '70s was KPOI and KKUA.

In the early 70's the recurring TV ad...
"Jerry Asam...Land is the basis of all wealth!"

He was selling Hawaiian Ocean View property in Ka'u and they were
verrrrrrrry cheap. The place is so populated now that I just giggle
driving past thinking of Jerry Asam and wish I had plunked down the
$2000 per acre -I think I remember.

Jingles:

"Holiday Mart, Holiday Mart, shop at Holiday Mart, it's smart!"

"Hinano, the taste of quality, Hinano, the taste of quality." sung and
presumably written by none other than Keola Beamer (not one of his more
memorable works).

"Arakawa's in Waipahu, where all Hawaii saves." sung by Kalapana (or at
least, Mackey Feary).

Ad slogan:

"Have a bang? See Dang." (body and fender shop).

I was at a baby's 1st birthday party several years ago (wasn't quite
large enough or didn't have quite enough Hawaiian food to qualify as a
luau) and there was a guitarist/singer playing all kinds of popular
songs. He was pretty decent. He started singing some of the commercial
jingles that he had done. I only recall the Pizza Hut ("Straight from
the Hut, your kamaaina Pizza Hut") jingle but I think he had a few more.
Sort of like a local Barry Manilow (who has been known to sing medleys
of his "commercial" hits, including "You deserve a break today..", in
concert).

HOVE straddles Mauna Loa's SW Rift Zone. I'd take the land if they gave
it to me, but I sure wouldn't put anything permanent there.

Speaking of real estate, there was Velva Bergevin:
"Remember, there'll always be more people; there'll never be more land."

I was amused to discover that she lived in a rented condo at Diamond
Head.

----
Random trash rattling around in the old skull:

"You got all those towels with Rinso box-tops?"

"Shop at Fisher Hawaii, next to Gibson's
Mapunapuna Paa St Store..."

....Come on out to Toyota City
that's the reason for this ditty...
......or my name ain't Josephine.

Vinyl is final

Gerard, I wouldn't buy it now after what I have learned from you and
having listened to Frank Truesdale, vulcanologist (think that his last
name) all too many times on Kona Historical Society trips.

Went down to Waiahukini, the bluffs and beach on the north side of Ka
Lae, last year and saw what was left of the village due to the lava
flows. Hard to imagine what had been there before and man(!) that trip
was rough and rocky!!!

I remember in 1971 thinking I should have listened to Jerry Asam but I
had no money. Fortunate, I guess.

Frank Trusdell. He's a Good Guy. It's nice to see Hawaiians in such
positions of prominence at HVO (the scientist in charge is another
Hawaiian, Jim Kauahikaua; he's a Good Guy too).
