Did anyone else see the little snipet on Cane Toads on the World of
Discovery on the Discovery Channel (Oceanic Channel 28)? They recounted
how cane taods were imported to Northern Australia from Hawaii to control
the insect population. Apparently they thrived there and became a pest.
One man has made it his mission in life to eliminate cane toads from
Australia. Showed him gleefully weaving back and forth on the road to run
over any toad which did not escape in time. Made this really cool
popping sound when he successfully ran over them. <hop!> <hop!> <pop!>
'Twas a horrible sight to behold the carnage left on the raod in the wake
of his volkswagon bus.

P.S. I've heard that a lit cigarette placed in the mouth of a toad will
cause it to swell-up and pop. Does anyone know whether this is true?

Yes, saw it a while back though. Hawaiis' contribution to the world. Have
you noticed
that now days there don't seem to have too many of them toads around. When
we were kids
dem things used to all over the place. In high school we had to catch them
and used
them in place of frogs(hard to get) in Biology class for (ahem) "surgical
practice".
Some guys would bring in 15-20 (just in case some body couldn't find one).
On warm
humid summer nights you could find 2 or 3 of dem buggahs sitting under the
telephone
pole with the street lights waiting for the termites to fall down. Maybe
they have
become an endangered species.

Don't tell Sean... No he doesn't smoke, but he'd surely find another way
to test this theory... ("let's try the big toad first... then the little
one..." sez the junior scientist... "I got a whole bucketfull!")

But, but... it's a rite of passage for young boys. As youngsters growing
up close to a vacant field next to a stream, there were lotsa toad eggs,
polywogs, and toads to play with. I recall a particularly grisly scene
one New Years Eve where the older kids in the neighborhood placed
firecrackers in the mouths of the toads <kaboom!>, much to horror (okay,
okay... delight) of the younger kiddies.

Yes... there does seem to be less of them, but I think if you go to more
rural areas, you can still find a lot of them. I believe these toads
were introduced into Hawaii as well. Does anyone know where they are
originally from? I believe they are the bufo marinus variety.
