** Astros Draft Johnson **
University of Hawaii pitcher Mark Johnson was chosen in the first
round of the amateur baseball draft by the Houston Astros
yesterday. He was the 19th pick overall and joins two other
former Rainbows, Derek Tatsuno and Mike Campbell, as first round
selections. "I'm happy to a part of the Astros' program," said
Johnson, currently working out the U.S. national team at
Millington, Tenn. in preparation for the upcoming summer
Olympics. Based on what players in his draft position have
received in the past, Johnson could receive a signing bonus in
the $1 million range. "I think everything will go fair (in
negotiations)" he said. Also drafted yesterday were Rainbow
outfielder Jason Ross (in the 13th round by the Atlanta Braves)
and UH recruit Jared Sundberg (in the 16th round by the expansion
Tampa Bay Devil Rays).
** Top Prep Honors to Watson, Arceneaux **
Kamehameha's Rachel Watson and St. Louis' Darnell Arceneaux were
named the *Honolulu Advertiser's* female and male high school
athletes of the year today. Both recently graduated. Watson,
bound for Syracuse University, earned all-state honors in
volleyball and basketball this year for the Warriors. "She's the
most naturally talented girl I've ever worked with," said
Kamehameha volleyball coach Dan Kitashima. Arceneaux, who signed
a letter of intent to play football for Utah next season, was Mr.
Everything for St. Louis. He was this year's state offensive
player of the year in football, passing for a record 27
touchdowns for the Prep Bowl champion Crusaders. In basketball,
he earned all-state honors as a guard for the second consecutive
year. "He's a true gamer," said St. Louis basketball coach
Darryl Gabriel. "When the going gets tough, he takes the game to
another level."

** Ho, Garcia Advance **
Hawaii surfers Derek Ho and Sunny Garcia will join six others in
the quarterfinals of the Quiksilver Pro at East Java, Indonesia
today. Yesterday, Ho, the 1993 world champion, had a session he
described as "one of the greatest of my life." The 6- to 8-foot
waves at the surf spot called G-Land are similar to the ones at
Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore, he said. Garcia, ranked second
in the current world standings, surfed to an easy win over Stuart
Bedford-Brown of Australia.

Radford to accept a teaching position at Maryknoll, his alma

Tennis players from five different Oahu high schools will
represent Hawaii on a tour of Japan and Korea later this month.
The tour is sponsored by the U.S. Soft Tennis Association and
players are paying their own expenses for the two-week trip.
----

the Hawaii Select Spring League last night at Kalaheo High School
