Got this in email... Looks like the media are starting
to take notice...

"Aloha na hoa: Beth Hillyer of KHNL Channel 8 called me
this AM to do story about the impact of Varroa on our
bees here on O`ahu. . .and about its impact on the
yield of pollinator dependant fruits and vegetable at
commercial farms, community, neighborhood and backyard
gardens across the state. She had heard that there
were fewer bee visiting flowering plants this season,
and had seen it herself."

Too bad I missed that, but I only got to s.c.h. tonight.

Any report of it having spread to other islands yet?
(Haven't gotten as far down that yard as to where the
bee hive is lately. Too much other stuff to do.)

This posting is a little late so you shouldn't be
concerned about missing it. But it's nice to hear that
the media seems to be getting the point.

Varroa shouldn't spread if there are state inspectors
for the Super Ferry. But you will see a bee kill at
your hive with a lot of dead bees on the ground under
the hive where the other bees have pushed them out.

There's another bug that's decimating bees but it might
take years to arrive here from Florida. I haven't heard
that it's gotten to California yet. Some theorize that
it's originally from Australia and went East-- showing
up in Israel where their researchers have discovered an
AIDS-like virus that debilitates the bees so bad that
they can't find their way back to the hive. For this
bug, the dead hives appear deserted. No dead bees on
the ground.
