Source of word amama

Aloha,

Is the Hawaiian word 'amama' an original Hawaiian word or was it
borrowed from the English language?
My Hawaiian-English dictionaries say it is pre-contact Hawaiian.
I find it interesting that one definition says "like our Amen to -
a prayer" (Lorrin Andrews Hawaiian dictionary).

Does anyone know where I might purchase a copy of the Old Testament
in Hawaiian and English? I have a New Testament in Hawaiian-English
and a Hawaiian only Old and New Testament, which the American Bible
Society still sells, but for my purposes a Hawaiian-English Old
Testament would be best. TIA

My guess is that it's an "Original", because...

Look up "Amene". It may or may not be there (I've just looked around for a
dictionary and can't find one to verify, but), and you'll notice that this
*IS* borrowed.

Difficult. I'd say, just put a KJV beside the OT version, and go4it.
Shouldn't be that difficult, and it would be an interesting way to learn
`O-lelo Hawai`i, but... I have doubts about the "age" of the vernacular.

In other words, if you spoke it like its written, people might look at
you REAL strange. Then again, if you struck up a conversation with someone
from Ni`ihau... who knows?

Hmmm...I don't think so. "Amen" in Hawaiian is usually `amene.

Don't know of a source outside Hawai`i for the Old Testament, but this
comes from the Pukui/Elbert Hawaiian dictionary: `amama
Finished, of a pre-Christian prayer (said almost at the end of
a prayer); to finish a prayer, to pray and sacrifice.

`Amama ua noa: the prayer is said, the taboo is over

Ua `amama aku `o `Umi i ke kino o Hakau i mua o Ka`ili, kona akua:
`Umi offered the body of Hakau in sacrifice to Ka`ili, his god.

Aloha Robert-

You can write to Booklines Hawaii, 94-524 Puahi St., Waipahu, HI 96797 on a
Hawaiian KJV Bible and the New Testament (Greek) tranlation both in Hawaiian
and English side-by-side, "Kauoha Hou" is the title. I have both copies of it
in my library. A kapuna braddah I know, learned the model prayer from it and
it is written differently than modern Hawaiian. When he recited it, the other
braddahs wanted to know where he learned that style of Hawaiian. Like Nai'a
said, probably more understandable in Niihau. Still it can be understood as a
whole. It's a good start to learn Hawaiian if you know the English scriptures
by heart.
