what I need fo get kama'aina discount???
I was born & raised on Maui and lived there until I was 19, when my family
moved to California. I haven't been back since then (I'm 28 now - and if
you can believe it, I now live in North Carolina!), but hubby and I want to
go to Maui for our 5th anniversary next November, and I wanted to find out
if my Hawaiian birth certificate and my old old Hawaii state ID would be
good enough, or if I have to be a full time resident to get da good rates.
NOT that I am trying to deprive my home of well-deserved tourist income,
believe me!!! It's just I don't wanna stay in the Maui Beach Hotel (or the
Hukilau - are those hotels still there?!?!), and I can't afford the nicer
hotels, so I'm trying to find a happy medium - something nice *and*
affordable (i.e.: somewhere in between getting a free can of Raid with every
guest room, and getting a free helicopter tour with purchase of a $300/night
guest room!! --- I would settle for free buffet breakfast - wit portagee
sausage and rice YUMMY).
I can't wait to see Maui again! It has been TOO LONG! While I'm on the
subject, is anyone here from Maui? I grad '91 (Baldwin), but I also went St
Anthony's for a year or so. I lived in Harbor Lights a lot of the time I
was there (who didn't, right?!), and I went Kahului Elementary School for
most of my K-8 years. I wonder if Mr. Omura is still principal?!?!
Well, I hope someone here is from Maui, else I was jus talking bubbles up
there!!!! Was "talking bubbles" just something me and my friends said, or
was that a well known phrase?!?!
I am trying to get the Merrie Monarchs videotaped for me this weekend, I
still have a friend who lives back home (Lahaina) and I emailed her, I HOPE
she gets my email!!! I haven't seen the Merrie Monarchs since I left Maui
in late 93... :-( I really miss it... everything, the smell, the breezes,
the weather, the locals, the aloha spirit (yes, it exists), the food (O, the
glorious food!!!), the May Day celebrations, everything.
Anyway, thinking about going home next year, and having the merrie monarchs
on tonight (and I can't watch it live - waaaah!!!), just got me reminiscing
about home... if I thought me and hubby could make decent money back home I
would move back... but he is in a very specialized technical field and there
isn't anything like that in all of Hawaii (custom machinery building for
industrial plants and factories), so we are stuck on the mainland. The best
I can do is to move back to California, which is a lot closer to home!
Believe me, I'm trying! (North Carolina is a bit too... SOUTHERN!!!)
I guess I'll stop rambling now!!!
'k den, mahalos, take care and Aloha!

The 1st thing to do is to renew your Hawaii State ID. You
don't have to be a full-time resident to get or renew the ID.
I got mine even with a California home address, although
I applied for the ID in person. They asked where I filed my
tax return, and without thinking I said California. Lo and
behold, I still got the ID, but with the California address. I
thought that the ID would be useless for kamaaina discounts,
but no one batted an eye. I would suggest that you apply
for renewal as soon as you hit the Islands, and give as your
mailing address your relative's address on Maui to make
everything look right.

Re: hotels
Try Aston Hotels.
I heard a rumor Andre Tatibouet may have sold it recently, is this
true?
But he's a great guy and it's a great concept and a great chain.
I used to be from Maui, and it was heaven on earth. When I went to
MCC, back hn the early 70's we could still bring our dogs to class.
Does anyone else remeber those days?
