I lived on Oahu in the 70's and I remember my favorite radio station
being KKUA. I used to listen to Uncle Mikey (and his little phone
song), Lane Robinson, RJ, and of course Komosami (sp?) Kong.
Thankfully I have several cassette tapes with bits of these DJ's
spiels on them, including Kongs theme song.. Anyone know what
happened to any of these guys?
Also was anyone into pro wrestling in the late 70's in Hawaii? I used
to watch Wrestling Hawaii religiously every Friday night. Even taping
the shows (audio cassettes, not videos). Some of the charcaters,
Pampiro Firpo (the Missing Link), Bill and Russ Francis, Lord Blears,
Steve Strong, Jesse (The Great) Ventura, Tor Kamaka, Chief Billy White
Wolf, John Tolos, Sammy Steamboat Mokauahi (sp?) and others.
Oh to be young and innocent.

"Uncle Mickey" is now Michael W. Perry who partners with Dr. Larry Price
on K59. Making some bigger and better bucks now.
It is with great sadness that we lost Sam "Steamboat" Mokuahi a couple
of weeks ago. He left this world at a venerable age of 81 if I remember
correctly.
Kong is now doing radio in Japan and is *extremely* successful and doing
a terrific job of promoting Hawaiian music there; he still gets back to
Oahu every couple of months.
hmmmm..Im confused now.. I thought this Mokuahi was the father of the mn that
wrestled back in the 70s...

I remember Kamasami Kong very fondly, including some of the T-shirts
with his name on them. I would love to have a dub of some of those shows
with him, I'll send a few blanks as a trade or something. E-mail me
directly, I've got to hear him.
One reason is I got to hear Kong's theme song again. It's been in my
head for the last few months, and all I remember is the big gong at the
beginning and a bold voice saying KAMASAMI KONG! And of course the
classic call of "wooo wooo wooo wooo wooo wooo wooo". Believe it or not,
this song was sampled by a group from England named Cold Cut, in a song
called "Stop This Crazy Thing", released in 1989. When I heard it, five
years after I moved away from Hawaii, I literally jumped out of my seat.
Wasn't he a DJ elsewhere before coming to KKUA?
I'd like to know what happened to Wili Moku. He was my idol for many
years, made me want to become a DJ myself.

All I got to say is OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAH!!!!!
aloha!

I hope I'm wrong then! I remember seeing the KGMB tape segment and then the
anchor saying something about "also known as the former Wrestler Sammy
Steamboat".

actually.....Kamasami Kong is based in Honolulu....does the show from
here...as does another radio station...Kong gets back to Japan once every
month...this is what I understood from the Station Manager/program director
of Kong's show.
BB Shawn is the one to talk to...anything you'd ever want to know about
wrestling (and then some) he's the man....once you get him started, he'll just
overload you with information....

Does he still use the 'Kong' Moniker in Japan?
Thanks for the update, Nancy. He must've just moved back from Japan
recently, eh? Glad he's home again...
Here, you guys decide: http://starbulletin.com/98/06/19/news/story10.html
But, I think this is the father of Sammy "Steamboat" Mokuahi, the former
wrestler, and who I think still coaches for a canoe club on O`ahu.

Just read through the posts in this topic and I'll add my 2 cents here.
Kamasami Kong has his own website and does radio shows for the Japanese
and Taiwan market I believe (been a while since I visited his site)...
anyway, here is the URL to Kong's website:
As noted by someone else, Michael W. Perry is now with KSSK radio and has
been since 1978. There was a big deal made when he moved from KKUA radio
to then KGMB radio (now KSSK)... He became the afternoon drive guy on KGMB
(then known as K59 AM) for several years until the death of J. Akuhead
Pupule in 1981 when he and Larry Price took over the morning show. The
Perry & Price morning show has been a ratings leader for KSSK now for many
years.
KKUA radio continued as an entity until the mid or late 1980s when the
call letters were dropped and the operation simulcasted with KQMQ FM...
The KKUA call letters were then snagged by Hawaii Public Radio and is now
the call letters of their Maui relay transmitter.
I remember KKUA from almost the time they started in the mid 1960s as a
country station (before that they were something else)... Shortly after
that KKUA 69 became a top 40 station and was in competition with KPOI and
later KORL radio in the late 60s and early 70s.
Other jocks that I remember who were on KKUA include Jim Peters, Ron King,
Steve Nicolet, Lan Roberts (who I heard from a few years ago, he was last
in Texas) and Lou Richards. Of course many people also remember Ron Jacobs
who was at KKUA from 1976 to about 1979 and was best known for bringing
out the 3 KKUA-Habilitat Homegrown albums.. (he later moved to KDEO radio
for a few years).... Jacobs is now doing talk radio at KCCN 1420 AM.
The thing I used to like about KKUA was their year end Top 69 songs
countdown, and after 1974 they also carried Casey Kasem's AMERICAN TOP 40
radio show (after KPOI 1380 changed formats)....

Does he have an e-mail address? I'd really be interested in talking
to him about it. Especially since I've recently gotten back into
wrestling and it's changed considerably since the 70's.

I don't know if this is correct or not (I 'm getting a wee bit
old...grin) but I think that you're thinking about Ricky "The Dragon"
Steamboat who (I think) is the son of Sam. I'm just guessing here
because it's been a loooong time since I took an interest in
wrestling. I remember in my "younger" days, I was one of those
wrestling fanatics who said: "Wrestling fake? You like die or what?"
..big fat grin
Aloha from Toride, Japan

UHHHH NO! He's been here quite a while...where have YOU been? ... had
breakfast with his shows Producer (and had a witness with me too) who
actually lives in Japan recently ... he comes here once a month and Kong
LIVES here and goes to Japan once a month....
Kong used to post frequently on CompuServe a couple of years ago, and the
IMPLICATION he always gave was that he lived in Japan; he always wrote
about how he was going to be home in Hawaii for a week or so at such-and-
such a time. Apparently he just wanted to give everyone the *impression*
he lived in Japan, then.
Whatever.

Sure Chris, his email address is listed above...be advised though that our
computer doesn't talk and so I will need to wait til he's home to read it to
him and then type his answers for him....so it may take a while to reply...if
time isn't of any importance, I know he'd be thrilled to have someone to talk
to about this subject matter... if you're local (live here in Hawai`i), he'll
probably give you his phone number...via private email....

SHOOTS...SORRY CASEY...It's CASEY, NOT CHRIS..... been a really long day and
didn't sleep at all last night....I just sort of decided to create a whole new
name for ya.....SORRY!
My Father's wrestling took him all over the world and I look back on that time
with fondness as I got to accompany him on many trips. Dad still keeps himself
involved with high school paddling. His current project is getting outrigger
canoe paddling recognized as a letter sport and assisting the high schools
with
their efforts.

Mahalo nui for clearing that up Samantha. Besides his wrestling, I remember
your Dad from 20 years ago when I paddled canoe for the now defunct Moana Kai
canoe club. I can't remember the name of your Dad's canoe club right now, but
we all launched from the same small beach area on the Diamond Head side of Ala
Moana Park next to Magic Island. Even way back then, didn't he also used to
sponsor/train the Kamehameha High School paddling team? Wow...was so long
ago yeah?

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, but I'm glad to know Sam-the
wrestler is alive. I remember some of his wrestling matches in the
late 70's. Particularly one where he beat John Tolos for the
championship belt. The whole match and what follows was classic. I
have that on cassette and hope to put it on my web page soon.
btw does your dad know Lord-Tally Ho-Blears' whereabouts?

I'm not Samantha, but...
Last I heard, LTHB was still living in Makaha with wife, Lee, who still
teaches aerobics at the Waianae Rec Center.

Sue & Casey,
Last I heard, Lord Tally Ho Blears was planning a COMEBACK as a wrestler
and his coach is Russ Francis. Or at least that's what wrestling buffs
Keoni, BB, and Gino tell me. They claim he's in better shape no--at
sixty-something--than he was when he was on the circuit. Huuuuuuu! Ain't
that somethin!
Judy
Amazing. I just hope he doesn't become part of a WCW Pay Per View.
I remember the Francis'. Ed, Bill and Russ.
Koa Kai currently paddles and stores their canoes out of the Diamond
Head entrance to Magic Island.
The name of the canoe club was Hawaiian Warriors. He worked alot with all of
the private schools. Mainly Iolani, Priory, and Kamehameha.
