I've seen it twice, and my husband will come with me for my 3rd viewing
(assuming we can make it). It's a breath of fresh air. It's not
extremely original, but it's fun, and when the DVD comes out I am going
to get it.

Well I agree with you up to a point. I find that *most* of the

...actually, I saw an interview (Up Close) with the screenwriter, I
can't remember her name for the life of me. The movie isn't about
Greeks alone, it's about Greek-Americans and their struggle to
maintain their ethnic identity from childhood on. During the interview
she made a great point: Greeks don't fit in to a Hollywood mold. We're
a grounded people that doesn't fit into the stuffy country club mold
(if you've ever sat for dinner with a true Greek family you know what
I mean). Yet we're not on the other end of the spectrum either. That
is, we're not a problematic minority. The American public simply
doesn't feel sorry for us as they do other ethnic groups.... and why
should they? As far as ethnic groups go, we've exemplified success as
a whole: prison or crime is not associated with Greeks as it is with
other ethnicities. Cops don't racially profile us, we don't pick
strawberries. The grossly larger majority of Greeks are affluent and
educated. People want prison stories, cops and robbers, drugs and
tragedy. How many Japanese-American movies have you seen (another
successful ethnicity)? One could point out our Greek history and say
there's plenty of stories to be told. The old movie, Eleni, which took
place during our civil war period and commented on the atrocities our
people faced in the hands of the communists. I'll tell you though, I
would argue that movie was a success because it was filmed in the 80's
(I think?) during the cold war, and it portrayed the 'evil communist'
preying on the 'little people.' Americans went bonkers for ANY movie
that vilified communists.
I guess my point is we should be glad Hollywood hasn't screwed us as
they have most every other ethnic group in the US. You mentioned the
Italians (in a way I don't agree with btw), how long have those poor
souls put up with the mafia associations, the "Vinny" stereotypes? Not
only is it not fair to them, but I would argue that if a person hears
something so often, even THEY start to believe it about themselves! To
be portrayed in Hollywood is to be forever associated with the
stereotype HOLLYWOOD assigns you. Hollywood is the scourge of today's
society, the Goebbels of our era; they do not take responsibility for
the social impact their trash has on both the audience and the
subject....

Italians have been a big part of the entertainment world since the
vaudeville days. In the 20's and 30's, "wop" songs and "wop" comedies were
popular. But the "wops" were often being played by Jews or people from
other ethnic groups. If you want to see a relic of this preserved on film,
just look at any Marx Brothers film with Chico. I mean, you didn't really
think he was Italian, did you?
For some reason Latino actors usually play *excellent* Greeks and
Greeks *excellent* Latinos ( George Chakiris as "Bernardo" in West Side story
immediately comes to mind but there are others). I also look at the examples of
Anthony Quinn and Raul Julia ( "Tempest "1981 with John Casavetis). The Latina
girl in Corellis Mandolin did ..........ok.........as a Greek but nothing to
write home about. I was very suprised in watching Raul Julia , he did as good a
Greek as Quinn.........he even played the clarino and sang Greek!. Julia and
Quinn somehow managed to *capture* the fun loving indomitable will of the Greek
character and the enduring hardships that go along with that character. Very
entertaining and amazing IMO.

went in America in the age of four as an immigrant, but he never forgot Greece. He was
firstly known as an actor, but he soon started directing and won many Academy awards
for his film "Gentleman's agreement" (1947). In the next years he made other
box-office hits like "A streetcar named desire" (1951), "On the waterfront"
(1954),"East of Eden"(1955),"America-America" (1962). He discovered many actors and
actresses like Marlon Brando and he directed 21 Oscar-nominated performances and nine
winners. His career came almost to the end when he was blacklisted for being an
ex-communist, but he managed to survive. He wrote the screenplay for many of his films
and his last success was in 1976 with "The Last Tycoon". Since then he stopped filming
and he wrote a novel about his life. Now he lives somewhere between Greece and US,
writing books and articles and in 1999 was awarded an honorary Oscar for his movies.

These were immigrants who not only wanted to assimilate in a new land, they
wanted to re-create it in their own image. Movies gave them a power that was
almost God-like: If they were too late to create the world, they could at least
create America- its values and its myths, its traditions and its archetype, its
hopes and its dreams. And so it was the Jewish immigrants who came from the
shetels and the ghettos, who fled poverty and persecution, who thought up,
produced, and then mass marketed nothing less than the American dream...
THE MOVIE "FIRSTS"
Even before the powerful movie studios ruled the industry, one-reeler shorts
were made, forerunners of films as we know them. Probably the first one
produced was Cohen's Advertising Scheme. The story line was pretty simple: A
Jewish storekeeper tries unsuccessfully to make a sale. He finally gives up and
gives the vagrant, who didn't buy it, a full-length coat as a gift. When the
vagrant turns around, we see a sign advertising the store painted on the back.
So the very first movie made clear that the Jews were great salesman. It would
become a fitting metaphor for the movie industry that would make its mark with
brilliant advertising.....
The first American feature film was The Great Train Robbery (1903) starring a
Jew, Max Anderson, in the lead. Anderson went on to write, produce and act in
the very successful series of westerns - "Bronco Billy" - a theme Jewish
producers would find irresistible, maybe, just maybe, because it portrayed the
themes of heroism, conquering a new land, and overpowering the "strangers"
(translate that to mean Indians or Cossacks) who wanted to kill you?
The first large Hollywood production, from Adolph Zucker's Paramount, was
Queen Elizabeth (1912), starring the incomparable Sarah Bernhardt. Here was
more than a Jewish American Princess; Sarah, in the first major film, actually
made it to Queen. It was the success of this movie - the first film to be shown
in legitimate theater halls - that allowed Zucker to claim film as a legitimate
art form.....
But the biggest "first" of all, the one that catapulted movies from a minor
diversion to a major form of communication was the move into "talkies." And the
Jewish connection wasn't only that it was Warner Brothers that made the
picture. The first full-length talking film told the story of a young man who
rejected the wish of his father, a cantor, who wanted him, too, to become a
cantor. The cantor's son, instead of singing to God in the temple, chose to
become a popular singer. The movie was really the story of Al Jolson's life. In
a deeper sense, as the story of children breaking with their past for popular
acclaim and fame, it was also the story of almost all the patriarchs of
Hollywood....

As the studios grew, so did the role of the Jews there. Barney became president
of Paramount in 1936; Nicholas and Joseph Schenk became presidents of MGM; and
Irving Thalberg, the wunderkind of the film industry and movie legend who was
responsible for production at the age of 23, was manager of MGM from the end of
the 1920s until his death in 1936. When independent producers started to
challenge the major studios, again the majority of them were Jews. Probably the
most outstanding independent was Mike Todd, producer of Around the World in 80
Days. Todd was responsible for trhe Todd-AO new method of cinematography and,
according to many, responsible for Elizabeth Taylor joining the misshpachah and

films such as the African Queen, On The Waterfront, The Bridge On The River
Quai, and Lawrence Of Arabia. Stanley Kramer, another independent producer, was

direct On The Beach, Judgment At Nuremberg and Ship Of Fools.....

To be a director has to be a Jew's dream job. Descended from people who
throughout the ages have been told what to do by others, it must be the
ultimate thrill to finally be able to tell others what to do. No wonder so many
Jews made their mark as film directors! Ernst ubitsch came to this country from
Germany in 1923, after making a name for himself in his native country. He
directed sophisticated comedies with such finesse that a new phrase was coined
in Hollywood, "The Lubitsch touch." To him we owe Ninotchka, To Be Or Not To
Be, and Cluny Brown. Erich Van Stroheim and Josef Von Sternberg began the

parents gave him when he was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New
York. But of course you've heard of Woody Allen - director, screenwriter,
playwright, actor, and self-described genius. Like many other Jews, Allen had
problems coming to terms with his past and his heritage. In his early stand-up
routines, Allen would quip about his parents: "Their values are God and
carpeting." He explained his problem about believing in God this way: "If only
God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name in a
Swiss bank." he obsessed about his mortality: "It's not that I'm afraid to die.

Woody Allen may well be neurotic. For some he is a protypical "self-hating
