This is the second edition of Greek Rich List looking at the Greek and
Greek Cypriot communities in Britain. The richest 100 are worth a total
of £10.708 billion – no mean feat for a community only established in
the last half century. The average figure among the top 100 is almost
£108m, making the Greek Community one of the most successful ethnic
groups in Britain. In fact, the average wealth amongst them has
increased by nearly 44% since last year – the highest increase ever
recorded in any British rich list in a single year since the first such
list was produced 20 years ago.
Greek Rich List is compiled by Philip Beresford, Editor of The Sunday
Times Rich List.

The Sunday Rich List recently highlighted the wealth of some of the
public faces of the Greek community of the UK however another layer of
millionaire/billionaires has now emerged in an Evening Standard report
by City Editor Chris Blackhurst, the London Greek News reports.
Leading the pack of the undercover millionaires is Phillipe Niarchos the
son of late tycoon Stavros Niarchos who left on his death an estimated 3
billion UK pounds. Married to Eugenia Livanos Niarchos is valued at 850
million UK sterling but may easily exceed this.
Hot on Niarchos heals is another secretive shipping tycoon John Chandris
valued at 700 million UK pounds the head of the Chandris organisation
and carrying 500,000 passengers on his companies fleet of ships.
In the list is a well known figure in the Greek Cypriot community Haris
Sophoclides who gave the Labour Party 1 million UK pounds and has close
links with John Prescott, his wealth is valued at 100 million UK pounds.
Harry is currently the President of the World Federation of Cypriots and
the Greek Brotherhood the UKs representative body for Greek Cypriot
organisations in the UK.
The Sunday Times Rich List highlights the rising value in the Cypriot
Haji-Ioannou stock with a position as 21st richest Britain with an
approximate value of 1.290 billion pounds UK or 2.4 billion US dollars.
The rise in the Haji-Ioannou stock of 563 million pounds UK in a year is
a result of the boom of the Easyjet shares in which the family own
around 35 per cent of the business.
Chris Lazari the largely reclusive private business man is now ranked at
40th with a rise of 300million UK sterling to a value of 1.3 billion UK,
the rise largely down to the rise of commercial property in London.
The surprises are the slump in the Andy Panayiotou stock from 81stlast
year to 104th this year with a value of 715 million UK sterling a drop
from last year from 725 million UK sterling. The rise of John
Christodoulou to the stellar rating of 82nd richest man in the UK with a
value of 835 million UK sterling further highlights his Yianis Groups
aims to be a premier property group with the recent acquisition of the
Marrtiot Hotel in the Docklands. The Greek mainlanders in the guise of
shipping tycoons Michael Lemos, John Goulandris make a strong showing
with the index mostly dominated by Greek-Cypriots with major businesses
in the UK like Theo Paphitis 557th and Tony Yerolemou at 375th.
According to the London Greek News statement, they are aware of another
20 individuals of Greek extraction with wealth in excess of 50 million
UK pounds many of whom prefer to keep their names out of the public eye.
