Row Over Onassis Inheritance Reaches Greek Courts
ATHENS (Reuter) - Trustees of the fortune belonging to 11-year-old
Athina
Onassis said Friday they will fight in Greek courts against her French
father Thierry Roussel, who has charged them with breach of faith.
Athina is the last surviving member of the Onassis dynasty. Her
grandfather
Aristotle, who was once married to Jackie Kennedy, made a fortune in
shipping and divided it between a foundation in his name and his only
surviving child Christina.
Christina, who divorced Roussel before her death in 1988, left her
fortune
to Athina and appointed a group of trustees from her father's
foundation to
look after the inheritance.
``We claim nothing from Mr. Roussel,'' Onassis Foundation president
Stelios
Papadimitriou told a news conference. ``But the name of the foundation
is
marred and this is unforgivable.''
The fight between Roussel and the group of trustees looking after
Athina's
fortune moved from the Swiss courts to Greek courts in May when the
French
businessman sued four leading foundation members for breach of faith.
Roussel has sought to take charge of his daughter's money in
Switzerland,
saying he wanted to protect her interests.
The dispute over the handling of the inheritance has been brewing for
some
time but the usually reserved trustees began to speak out this year
during
court battles against Roussel.
``We are enraged,'' Papadimitriou said. ``Mr. Roussel has nothing to
do
with us or the foundation and he is meddling in things he knows
nothing
about.''
Roussel could not be reached for comment.
Athina's exact fortune has not been disclosed but it is estimated at
$4.6
billion, complete with her own Greek island.
The Greek court will now decide whether there are grounds for trying
the
case or whether charges should be dropped, Papadimitriou said.

As to whether who is ripping off who'm I have no idea. I can't
comment on the case as I have no real first hand knowledge.
Athina Roussel (of mother Chris Onassis & Father Thierry
Roussel), I believe lives with her father Messrs Roussel, in Switzerland
with his 2 other children from his other half, Gabby (don't quote me on
that!).
I TRULY hope Athina earns the happiness her mother never knew. I
feel the money she has will make her a huge target against all manner of
swindlers especially when she turns 18 & of legal age to manage the
finances inherited to her.
In any legal squabble, It's Athina who gets caught in the
crossfire & harms her especially in such a crucial phase in her life, the
infamous "teenage years", the time when researchers believe our self
image is formed in our subconscious.
If both parties I feel are really thinking of Athina's best
interests, they should stop the shamozzle & settle it quickly in her best
legal & rightful interests. I feel Ari would hate to see this happening
since he felt at the time his inheritance division to the trust & Athina
was the best thing for him to do since he lost his son due to a plane
accident & daugter Chris later, his only grandaughter is his surviving
heir of his own blood by proxy of mum, Chris.
I really do wish the Greek & Swiss legal entities recognise this
& help her lead as best as she can, a "normal" teenage life. Thierry a
Pharmaceutical magnate in Switzerland & the "foundation" made up of loyal
members to Ari will I feel show us all the perils of life with lots of
money in this day & age (& what a pain in the ass it can be).
Ari was a brilliant ship merchant/operator & he helped to build
Greece the shipping industry it possesses today. He deserved his riches &
he busted his ass making them. I hope that his sweat & toil won't go to
waste & make life for Athina hard as it was for Chris. Athina's such a
little "kouklitsa" [trust me she's 2 young 4 me !! :( ].
Oh weeel, we'll see in a few years time just how it will turn
out. It's just that the world has a long history of ripped off
inheritances & the magnamous deeds done by some to obtain them. It may
happen now or later when she's lot's older but I'd hate to be in her
shoes.
As for the "big time thief" well that's yet to crystallize, but
if it happened (& basically you can pick any one of millions of
applicants all over the world), well I'd hate to be in their shoes
because I believe if they did, they'd be a little stuffed from the "mates
of Ari" all over the world or someone would be trying the same stunt on
them.
