if so, did/does anyone actually buy/listen to it?

Do you mean "Ich lieb dich" and "Komm gib mir deine Hand"? These two
most certainly did happen and are on Past Masters Vol 1.
Wouldn't it figure? They made their bones in Hamburg.
Maybe the test of a good song is that it can survive translation

That reminds me, it was Johnny Mercer's 100th birthday a couple of
days ago. NPR had a program to celebrate his music for that day. You
can hear it here:

Glow-Worm was originally a german song, but Mercer's lyrics are not
*really* a translation.
The only She Loves You in stereo.
Never heard 'Seasons in the Sun' in English, then.

I stayed up late to hear your voice.
For all his other achievements, "wider than a mile" is one of the clunkiest
lyrics ever.
It upset me even as a 7-y-o!

And don't forget my "huckleberry friend" Even Andy Williams said he
still cringes over that phrase.
We were in Savannah leading up to his 100th and found the celebrations
planned more as a tourist dollar generating event.
IMHO he was a bit overrated, but nonetheless a talented guy..

Beg to differ. I've heard it's pure musical genius and one of those
phrases that you either get or don't.
It's great.
I don't get it. I think some of Mercer's lyrics are great... but "Moon
River" is not among them. 90% of the song's charm is the melody.
Wunnerful synergy, doncha think?
Do you remember it being released?
> Wunnerful synergy, doncha think?
Yeah. The lyrics are nonsensical on their own, but the melody lends
them a sort of mystical, murmuring summer breeze quality.
> Do you remember it being released?
I do - I remember hearing the Andy Williams hit being played a lot on
the car AM radio. I disregarded it at the time, probably because my
Dad liked it, but in truth, the song stuck with me even then and now I
admire it.
I was thinking about the old days, too. I always had moon rivers and
huckleberry friends when I was growing up, I think most everybody
does.
I love the song, lyrics and music both. What's wrong with "my
Huckleberry friend"? I think it's evocative and wistful.
I think it's a great line. Struck right to the heart of Americana.
What amazed me about Mercer, (when I became old enough to appreciate
him and look at his catalogue), were the songs like "I Remember You"
and "Fools Rushi In". Songs that I have always associated with early
rock 'n roll. "I Remember You" was written for Judy Garland.
But, the real jaw dropper for me was when I discovered he wrote the
lyrics for "Autumn Leaves". I don't how anyone can say the guy was
overrated.

I had not seen that. Thanks, PJ.
It's almost as weird seeing Stipe w/hair as it is looking at pics with
me w/hair! :)
I can't believe that's from '84. Good Lord. Danny, wait, I'm coming
with you!
I was going to comment on the shock of recalling Michael Stipe with
hair, but I see that abe beat me to it.
