Rights for Monet Painting?

Hi there!

I am writing on behalf of a friend of me, who has the following
question:

WHO HAS THE (COPY)RIGHTS for Claude Monet's paintings? He wants to use
a copy of "Impression, soleil levante" for a CD-cover in a very small
circulation: only 250 - 350 CD's.
We think the painting is exactly what we want, but we don't want to do
anything illegal. Here in the Netherlands we have an office that takes
care of copyrights for music and stuff, but it is not very clear where
the copyrights for pictures reside.
I know the painting is in Musee Marmottan in Paris, but when I was
surfing the web, I couldn't find their address nor their phone/fax
number to contact them directly.

Therefor, I hope to get an answer very soon by this medium.

I'm no lawyer, so be sure to double-check. Depends when the painting
was done. If it is more than 70 years old, it's in the public domain
(except for "intellectual rights" - something you don't pay for, but
can't misuse the picture).

Problem is, how you get the picture of the painting. Either you do it
yourself, or you buy the rights of use of a picture.

Insofar as finding the address of the Musee Marmottan, you can use the
database I created:

Ik ben zelf bij verschillende tekenprogramma's bekende werken van Monet
tegengekomen in de libraries, zonder enige copyright vermelding... Ik
denk dus dat je het gewoon zo kan gebruiken, daar Monet al een tijdje
geleden leefde...
