==========
MY COMMENTS:

Sadly, I must admit corruption - in its
myriad, diverse forms and manners - is
already THAT innately ingrained in the system.
It's a multi-headed hydra evidently from
the highest echelons (national) of power to
the lowest (local) Tanodbayan. However, it can
be equally said there are but and also a
***FEW*** principled individuals in the government
and civil services who have remained impervious
to its nefariously-debilitating influences.

They are just numbered and too far in-between
however.

Win or lose, either I suffer an acute case of
"lead poisoning" after having faced a military
firing squad like drug dealer Lim Seng; or be
ma-gilotin / decapitated ala-Marie Antoinette ...,
OR have a reserved Mandaluyong confinement in
the likes of Tatang de los Santos - that psychotic
Lapiang Malaya leader.

I'll pass ... :-)

Valentin de los Santos was the very first victim of Marcos's
murderous streak. It was probably a risky move that tested the
mettle of the Filipino's resolve when it came to violence but that
was the spark that Marcos needed to plot the martial law in the
years to come. You see Athos, these incidents will never be
recorded in our history because our culture would rather pretend
that it didn't happen.

nap, i tried to do a search on the net. i came up with one scrawny one
liner about some massacre in the 60s. and like you say, nothing on LM or
VDLS -- what was the massacre all about? while they were not recorded, some
would remember -- like you for example! so, what was lapiang malaya and
what was it all about? <if yah got the time .. hehehee> ty.

The best source of information about this massacre is probably our
in-house legal eagle in the person of Ben Guadiz. My recollection
of the events that lead to the massacre of the members and the
subsequent murder of the leader VDLS is fragmented and incomplete.
Here's what I remember:

I was still in college at the time and it happened within the
first two years after Marcos was elected president. The LM group
led by VDLS was formed in the same fashion as a cult and their
goal, if I remember it right, was to overthrow the Marcos govt.
Looking back, VDLS and his followers must have seen something evil
about the president that not every one in the country saw at the
time. The group, heardquartered in Pasay City which is but a
stone's throw from Malacanang, became popular and the papers
carried the LM's demand that Marcos step down from his post. I
cannot recall the charges against him, but Marcos was visibly
irritated by their incessant demonstration of defiance. The troops
tried to talk them into giving up, but to no avail specially in
the presence of newsmen who showed both curiousity and sympathy
for the LM.

What looked like an impasse suddenly turned into a bloody massacre
when one night, Marcos ordered the military to move in and break
the group up using the cover of darkness, and while everyone
including the news media was asleep. At this point I'm not sure if
the soldiers were in uniform or were told to wear clothing that
resembled the communist rebels. But what resulted in that raid was
a bloodbath when the soldiers started shooting without warning and
killing innocent civilians. The fatalaties included women and
children alike. The whole country specially the media was taken by
surprise by this heinous act but you know what, not one single
suspect was charged with the killing.

The capture and eventual murder of the leader VDLS is another
story and I would rather hear it from our own Ben Guadiz.

What do you intend to do with all this information Athos?

thanks for the info .. only wanted to what the lapian was all about since it
has been mentioned several times and i don't really know what it was all
about. must be something i missed or was not aware of since i was only a
kid at that time. besides, being a macoy fan myself, historical events like
this present me more facets of the marcos dynasty.

i wonder why such a significant event was not raised and recalled during
the heydays at the peak of the anti-marcos movement when i was still home in
p.i. i could hardly believe that in this day and age, such information ...
quite current in this century has nothing written about it like some
blackhole in the net. but again, thanks for the info -- will keep my ears
and eyes open as i surf the net.

This happened in the mid-60's. The Lapiang Malaya was made up of old
men (grandfathers) who dressed like the Katipuneros and carried bolos.
I recall watching them the day before they were killed as they hang
around their headquarters along Taft Ave. (next to the old American
School) near the border of Pasay City (which incidentally is not a
stone's throw away from Malacan~ang by any stretch of the
imagination...more like 20 km away). They numbered about 20 if I
remember right. Watching them that day just hanging around dressed the
way they were, I could not help but think at that time that they were
just a bunch of nuts. That evening they began to march northward along
Taft and were confronted by the police. They supposedly started raising
their bolos as they approached the line of policemen who were blocking
the road. The police began firing and, after the smoke had cleared, all
20 or so old men lay dead on Taft Ave. I do not remember now if their
wives and children were involved.

What shocked the country is not that the cops had killed them, but that
one minute they were just a bunch of old, harmless, costumed men and the
next minute they had challenged armed policemen with their bolos. They
were not muslims and yet they behaved like hurumentados. Valentin de
los Santos was said to have been wearing an anting-anting which he
believed would stop bullets. It is sad that whatever issues these old
men had were quickly glossed over by the public because of the weirdness
of the situation...just crazy demands from a bunch of crazy old men.
This incident was never seriously considered to be politically
motivated. The policemen involved in the shooting were found by the NBI
to have acted in self defense. The public blamed Valentin de los Santos
for leading the group of old men to their deaths.

Thank you for that observation and opinion ...It is to say the
least, enlightening to those such as I whom remember events such
as this, but have since relegated it to 'fable.'

I remember this event, the press and most people assumed that Lapiang Malaya are
nothing but kooks. Some are wearing Katipunan uniforms, and most are using bolos as
weapons, few people knew about their grievances. They failed to garner support in the
large part because they don't have any propaganda machinery. Does anybody know what
their gripes are?
