Chanda Romero evicted
Wednesday, March 1, 2000 01:41 AM ZE8

QUEZON CITY, (ABS-CBN) - It was almost like in her movies where the tables have
fatefully turned on her villain role. But it was a real-life scenario and
semi-retired character actress Chanda Romero insists she ain't no villain.

On her 46th birthday on Monday, Romero found herself homeless after she was
again barred from entering the room she had been renting at Loyola Heights
subdivision since 1995.

For reportedly having failed to pay rental fees amounting to P130,000, Romero's
house administrator decided to evict the veteran actress from the apartment on
Sunday.

The lock of the house gate was replaced the following day, preventing Romero's
access to her room.

"This is supposed to be the gate, the key of my gate! See this is suppose to be
it, it doesn't work anymore, pinalitan daw ngayon (they changed it today)," an
apparently drunk Romero said, as she threw a fit over her unexpected eviction
in front of an ABS-CBN camera.

Enraged at the way she was thrown out of her apartment, Romero vowed to file
charges against house administrator Noel Marquez for allegedly having displaced
her illegally and for "treating her like a dog".

"Tama ba 'to? Tama ba 'to? Tell me is this right? Anybody who has half a brain
can say this is not correct !" a fuming Romero said.

"Bakit hindi sila maghintay ng court order, may court order na ba? I am not a
lawyer but I can understand what that means," she added.

[Why don't they wait for a court order, has a court order been issued?]

Since then, the veteran actress has been spending the night at a friend's house
near the subdivision's chapel. She said a wooden couch serves as her temporary
bed.

Meanwhile, Romero has chosen to spare her US-based family from her predicament.

"I don't wanna call them in the States because I don't want them to worry. I've
been living alone since I was 18 years old," she explained.

Neither Marquez nor the barangay captain in the area faced the media following
the commotion outside Romero's apartment.

The semi-retired actress could only shake her head in irony.

"It's my goddamn birthday and I'm spending it like this," Romero said
tearfully.

The ABS-CBN crew gamely sang her a birthday tune.

I don't know if all of you know this lady Chanda Romero but her situation as
almost becoming a bag lady is a very tragic dramatization of her present
existence. Good that she has still friends whom could give her a little space
although there is no assurance for a permanent kindness. What come next is
doom. There is really a day of reckoning. Perhaps, you know why it hits Chanda
Romero.

Being an actor/ress in the Philippines is not easy. You may
star in the film, but it doesn't guarantee that you will be
paid, or maybe paid in time. Then you have to pay your
agent...if you have one, plus the "other" services you have
to perform to get a job.
It is sickening sometimes.

You can't just lock out a tenant even if he/she is several months late
with the rent. A notice has to be given, ie 3 day notice to pay or
quit or a 30 day notice. If the tenant does not pay, the landlord is
can bring the matter to court. If the court decides to evict the
tenant, then the marshal will implement the actual eviction. At least
thats how it goes here in California. Im sure theres similar laws in
the Philippines too. Of course, laws are only good if its implemented.

What? You're kidding! With another lame former actor in the highest office of the
land
it won't be long before she got the justice she deserves.

There are similar laws concerning evictions. And I believe that it is
30days.
