1991: the year when the greats of Philippine entertainment passed away

1991 saw the passing of many of the greatest men and women in the
field of Philippine entertainment. This list may not be complete,
--- you can add to it if you know of someone not mentioned. The
bulk of this article came from Philippine News.:

April - Ramon Estella - director and one of the earliest Filipino
film maker; he was among the individuals who established Philippine
cinema; among his works was Huling Habilin wiht Rsa del Rosario
and Leopoldo Salcedo.

- Lamberto Avellana - national atist for theater and film; ]
Many of his works were not money makers but won prestigious awards
for LVN pictures. Among them was Anak Dalita voted Best Picture
in the Asian Film Festival (1956); Badjao - for which he won the
Best Director in the same festival in 1957. If you remember, Mig
Gomez described these two films in his post on Philippine cinema
a year ago - as classics

- Teroy de Guzman - comedian

- Billy Surot - pre-war comedian

- Lino Brocka - considered as one of the greatest directors
in Philippine movieland (if not the best)

- Jose Mari Velez - newscaster, voted as the Broadcaster of
the year by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas - posthumously

July

- Atang de la Rama, national artist, known for her kundimans

- Susana C. de Guzman - one of the first women directors -
directed Probinsiyana with Carmen Rosales

- Leroy Salvador - actor, director, producer - won the Best
Supporting Actor trophy in the 1959 Asian Film Festival in Manuel
Silos' - Biyaya ng Lupa -. Before he died, he managed to complete
the Cebuano film Matud Nila. There is supposed to be a resurgence
of Visayan films at present

December

- Carmen Rosales, actresss

- Carmencita Palma, actress

- Babette Villaruel - movie writer and comic

- Robert Talabis - character actor

- Adul de Leon - stage and film actress

- Orlando Nadres - stage and film actor, also screenplay writer

- Paola Luz - singer

- Joaquin Fajardo - quintessential movie goon
