Too much fuss for nothing, but what actually is the big deal, I don't
think its a disgrace to say you have Filipino blood in you. Even Julio
Iglesias always jokes that he is half Filipino because of his first wife
Isabel Preysler & half Dutch because of his second common law wife &
soon wife to be. In Spain, where Isabel has been residing for many
years now and she is part of all the social events and is even a writer
and works for some publishers, she is always referred as LA FILIPINA and
always held in high esteem. The Preysler family on her fathers side are
descended from Spaniards but born and raised in the Philippines, while
the Arrastia surname on her mothers side are mestizos, and their women
have always been noted for their beauty, the father of the mother or
better still the grandfather of Isabel is from Pampanga. So that is
probably why they even look better, that added ingredient made the
perfect stew. Of course Julio being a Spaniard plus w/Isabels family
tree, the children will have very much less percentage in them, but it
does not discount the fact that they still have even a little Filipino
blood in them.

I cannot help it as I don't think I was understood clear enough when I
said that though Enrique still has Filipino blood, the percentage in him
and his siblings is already very much less. Isabel, their mother never
denies the fact that she comes from the PH, nor does her children and
even Julio himself. She was born and raised in the PH, so in Spain she
is called LA FILIPINA, but Isabel is three fourths white and a quarter
Filipino; having married Julio who is full blooded Spaniard from Spain,
her children now you can say are almost full blooded caucasians because
their percentage of Filipino is now only one-eighth, but like I said it
still does not discount the fact that they carry even a very minute
percentage of Filipino in them, but in all instances when they are
interviewed and asked on their parentage, they are always proud to say
that their mother is from the Philippines..

So your saying that her one grandfather from Pampanga is the only native
Filipino, that her grandparents were all pure Spanish? what are
mestizos? I thought they were half or part? To me a mestizo means an
indigenous person mixed w/ a European (Spaniard). Let's say that that 2
of her grandparents (her dad's side) were pure Spanish...and not a
Spaniard b/c those are limited to peninsular people of Spanish descent
and on her maternal grandfather a native Filipino and her maternal
grandmother a mestiza, assuming she was half filipina and half Spanish.
That would make her (Isabel) 37.5% Filipino and 62.5% Spanish. Yes,
more Spanish than Filipino making Enrique 18.75% Filipino which is not
as much as I thought, but still his mother is not 75% or 3/4 as you
claim.

I don't think anybody is pure anything these days. What is a
pure Filipino anyway. A Negrito? What's a pure Spaniard? Hell,
Julio Iglesias could have some Moorish blood in him for all we
know. Othello's could be his ancestor for all I care. Julio
calls himself a Spaniard, that's good enough for me. It's up to
what one calls themself, the hell with bloodlines. If you call
yourself a Filipino, then you be a Filipino, never mind the "pure
Filipino" stuff. If Isabela Preysler refers to herself only as a
Filipino, then Enrique is half-Filipino. If Preysler calls
herself "half-Filipino", then Enrique is 1/4 Filipino.
We can debate about it, but ultimately, it's up to Ms. Preysler
and her children to decide what they want to call themselves. I
think the true problem here is not that Enrique doesn't deny he
is part-Filipino when pressed, but more the fact that it irks
some Filipinos that it is not publicized more of the fact that
Enrique is part Filipino. I think there is the possible
perception, true or not, that Enrique is marketing himself only
in the image that he is a pure Spaniard to his audience, and that
he is not warm to the idea of openly maketing to his audience the
fact he is part-Filipino because he believes it will hurt his
image as a "Latin Lover". Only when pressed will Enrique admit
to his Filipino side, and even then, he tries to make no big deal
of it. Just my opinion. I think the people of Wales got it
right. Anybody who is born in Wales is Welsh. Anybody who
has Welsh parents are Welsh. Anybody who lives in Wales, no
matter where they came from, but now considers themselves
Welsh, are Welsh. Even the black people in Wales call themselves
Welshmen and nobody has a problem that their ancestors came from
across the world in Africa. To everybody there, they're Welsh,
nuff' said.

Actually, Isabel Presley's Kapampangan ancestors were Spaniards who grabbed
land from the Filipino natives. They never married any of the natives.
Therefore, Isabel's blood is 100% Spanish and her children, including Enrique
Iglesias, HAVE NO Filipino blood.

Nang ako po'y nakatira sa España, ang bansag kay Isabel Preysler
ng mga pahayagan at lingguhang babasahin ay "La China". Marahil
wala si Isabel na lahing Pilipino baka lahing Intsik!

Wow, so they're pure Spanish (not Spaniard). Funny, I have cousins who
are half Filipinos and they don't even look like what Isabel looks
like. You know Isabel as some Asian blood in her, there's no doubt
about that. None of her characteristics (by looks only) implicate that
she's pure Spanish. Even people from the Canary Islands look more
anglo than she does.

True, it's all up to that person. Although I hear many black people say
this all the time whenever I say I'm mixed. I'm mixed b/c it happened
w/in 2 - 3 generations ago. Not hundreds of years like Spaniards.
Besides, I just found out (someone posted the link previously) that
Julio Iglesias paternal side are Galegos. Galicia was not influenced by
the Moors at all. They kept them out. *G* Anyway, we all know he
(Julio) calls himself a Spaniard and not a Galego. I'm sure he doesn't
even speak Galician. He probably understands it fairly well.

I think you're absolutely right. It seems if it's not the blacks, it's
Filipinos who getts annoyed when people don't say who they are. I'm
sure he loves his mom a whole lot and therefore would not deny her side
whether she's a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th generation Spanish or part
Filipino or whatevah!

In case my last message didn't go through:

I have cousins who are half Filipinos and don't look it either. If
Isabel is suppose to be NON-Filipino, having no "indio" blood then she
really is the odd one for a Spanish person. She shows striking
similarities w/ East Asians and even people from The Canary Islands look
more white than she does.

I don't really care if ISabel Preysler is Filipina or not.. but just
thought I'd note..

How long have her Spanish ancestors been in the Philippines? Since the
1700 or 1800's, right? From 1700 to her birth, she had a total of maybe
1000+ ancestors (8 g-grandparents, 16 gg, 32 ggg, 64 ggg, 128 gggg,
256 ggggg, etc). Wouldn't you think that at least ONE couple were of
Filipino descent? Especially in the past you don't know...

I wonder if she's traced her genealogy..or anyone else

True. My cousins look caucasians and they're half...and 1/4 Filipino.
So if Isabel has less than that...if none at all, why does she resemble
east Asians? I know there aren't anything that looks like that in any
part of Spain! I have friends in Mallorca, they don't look like that, I
have a friend in Gerona, she doesn't look like that, I have a few in
Barcelona, none of them look like that even though they have diff.
features from each other, another girl I know lives in Valencia, they
don't look like that, another one in Guadaljara (central) and he
certainly doesn't look like that, and one in Asturias...definitely does
not look like that. I've seen diff. people in all of southern Spain
too...they don't look like Isabel and I watch Galician t.v....they
certainly don't look like that. :-)

Thank you! That was my point. It's odd that Spaniards would not have
mixed w/ the natives, but if her ancestors were there for
generations...there is no way that they would have kept to themselves!
*L* I thought of the same thing. I don't care about Enrique, this is
about his mom! *L* Let's start tracing her genealogy. Hmm, know where
she was born & her age? Oh wait, what was her dad's and mom's name? :-)

ACK!!! I have enough probs with my genealogy research already to work on
someone else's genealogy!!! GRIN... Knowing my luck, I'll probably find
that one of her ancestors used to live in a place whose church records
were burned in WWII... haha.. ;) But if someone can takes on the task,
it should be easy depending if the church records are there.... And if
it says "indio/a" then that confirms her ancestry.

This kind of reminds me of my first cousin, once removed's new wife.
They just came from Japan (for US Navy). Anyway, I met her last year in
the Bay Area. She speaks Tagalog naturally (like a native speaker),
prefering to speak to everyone in Tagalog.

Even when she was playing Nintendo with me and my (mainly)
English-speaking cousins, she spoke Tagalog. I just assumed she was a
full-blooded Filipina.

Guess again! To my surprise, she told us that she is German and
Chinese, but raised in the Philippines. She claims to have no Filipino
blood! Her English has a Tagalog accent though.... And she looks
Filipino. I'm thinking though that maybe at least ONE person on her
Chinese side has Filipino ancestry.. but who knows. Another surprise,
she speaks fluent Japanese! Weird... heeh maybe she's a spy? :)

That's why I never switch speaking Tagalog to another Filipino if I have
anything bad to say to a non-Filipino... I've learned my lesson...

One time, me and my cousins went to this Filipino bar to try their specialty
"halo-halo" in Toronto, and there was a lady, she's caucasian, and I told my
cousin loudly in Tagalog "Marunong ba namang gumawa ng halo-halo itong aleng
ito?" (Does this lady know how to make halo-halo?)... and the lady spoke to me
in Tagalog with pure Tagalog accent "Aba siempre, gusto niyo pustahan pa tayo
eh" (Of course I do, I can even bet you on that one!)... I was so embarrassed!

Maybe she really is pure Spanish but her ancestors from generations to
generations evolved to look like Sra. Preysler now because of the tropical
environment! LOL... Just kidding =)

It's odd to hear this. I'm usually the one who says this when referring
to my family and when I do, it means the generation AFTER me. I take it
he's your 1st cousin removed once (ascending). :-)

With a mixture like Chinese & German I wouldn't be too surprised.
Unless you're right, maybe one of her Chinese ancestors did mix. I
wonder how many generation Chinese is she. Anything more than 2 is
kinda odd. But then again, I really don't know the history of the
Chinese going to the Phils.

HAHAHA... funny story. This has happened to me, but opposite of what
you have experienced. Sometimes I am earshot of what Filipinos are
saying. They think I'm some light skinned Mexican or Samoan or
something, so they go ahead and speak what's on their mind. I remember
in high school a couple of years ago, this kid said to his sister
"nasaan naman si nanay? nagtatate na ako!" (where's mom?? I have to take
a shit) I was going to say "E, tumae ka na sa loob ng eskuwelahan." (
Uh, then take a shit in the school). But I didn't have the heart to. :)

When I was in Walgreens a month ago, I told the cashier "kumusta na po?"
She smiles and says "ohhh, who taught you that?" So I say "Eh
siyempre.. pinoy ako.. Ang nanay at tatay ko ang nagturo sa 'kin." (I'm
pinoy, my mom and dad taught me). The cashier gulped and was speechless
then preceeded to ask where I was from.

I love their reaction.... Happened MANY times with me, my mom, and
her sibligns. And not just with Tagalog-speakers too.. With Spanish
(tho not much of a surprise) and maybe Japanese and Korean speakers....
German and French people don't react much, I guess they just expect
people to know their language already. ;) And Hindis and Chinese people
shower me with generosity with a simple "Namaste, ap kesa he" or "Ni hao
ma? xie xie.."

Ahh, the joys of a polyglot-in-training.. :)

God Kalani, você é muito velho ;) When *I* talk about a first cousin,
once removed it's usually the ones above me... I have at least 40 of
them. I only have ONE first cousin, once removed who is below me and
she can't talk/walk/eat by herself.. she's 4 months old.. TODAY as a
matter of fact. And another will be born this year on my mom's side...
whoopie.. one on each side..

Actually, I'm the 5th to the youngest person in my generation, out of
29. And just now as I read it when you said 40, I was

I didn't include my paternal grandmother's side... she has too many
