Just to start a topic, if you had to choose the top five Pinoy movies
you have ever seen, what would they be? Dapat, Pinoy, ha? A Dangerous Life
doesn't count. This shouldn't be too difficult since most movies made in
the Philippines are really feature length soap operas, but here is my
list, in no particular order:

1. Kakaba-kaba Ka Ba? (Classic! Watch for Nanette Inventor in a nun's outfit)
2. Lollipops and Roses (at Burong Talangka) (partly shot in San Francisco,
it is in my mind quite a radical storyline for its time. Black and white
pa ito!)
3. Sister Stella L. (Touchy topic, although a little sanitized. And the
acting skill of L. Guilien is evident)
4. Moral (Well directed and acted.)
5. Darna...Kuno? (a satire of Pinoy komiks, with Dolphy in top comic form.
If only it had a better ending, but the concept was sound. Memories still
gets me giggling).

Sort of hovering there are Oro Plata Mata and Macho Dancer, believe it or not.

What about you?

My own more-than-five list:
1. Oro, Plata, Mata
2. Condemned (A Nora Aunor movie.)
3. Kakaba-Kaba Ka Ba? (A Mike De Leon movie.)
4. (Another Mike De Leon movie about incest starring Charo Santos and Vic Silayan.)
5. (That period piece starring Cecille Castillo and Philip Salvador.)
6. Banaue (Another Nora Aunor movie.)
7. Relasyon (The only Vilma movie I like.)
8. Atsay (Yet another Nora Aunor movie. Obvious bang Noranian?)
9. Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang
10. (That Amy Austria/Gina Alajar movie about rape.)

Hoy, yoong #4 I think is Kisapmata (beauty talaga yon!), ang #10 mo naman eh
ANO BA YON (here I am, pacing
in my room thinking of the title .... parang "Sakdal" ang tunog non di ba?)....

Bakit mo
hindi si-ney ito ....) Himala (beauty yon!) NExt is Facifica de Falayfay
(beauty din siya! Classic na classic at walang kupas!). Ang huling dagdag ko
naman eh "Gatas" (starring Myra Manibog, Olivia Ortiz, Tigas Ortigas and
isang magandang club called "Hots"

sasabihin dahil baka ako ma-turn on, eh magBIBISIKLETA pa ako papuntang campus.
Mahihirapan pa ako kung saka sakali. Pero that's beside the point, my punto is
hoy, bakit mo naman ininclude ang Burong Talangka Lollipops and Roses?
Diyos ko naman! Don't cheapify me to death!
Tchuss! ......Mhike

Got it! #10 is "Brutal"!
WOnderful acting talaga. Ika nga ng mga
khritihks kuno, it's AMS (a-must-see).

Hey! what about SCORPIO NIGHTS??? BAGETS?!? KAMAKALAWA?!?
'The Bodyguard'?
May kantahan, may
May ibang pelikula

Is this the one with Nora Aunor wearing an outrageous afro, ante-dating
Madonna's kitsch "Deeper and Deeper" video?

Ever seen the ole Dolphy & Panchito slapstick movies (50s or 60s?)? Now
those are classics -- perversely funny, if I may say.

>
>Sort of hovering there are Oro Plata Mata and Macho Dancer, believe it or not.

>What about you?

OK, here's my top five: (not necessarily in order)

1. Oro, Plata, Mata (Maya Valdes' (yup, with an S!) 'dalampasigan' scene.
That's gotta be it. 8-)

2. 'Merika (I thought this was one of the few movies straying away from that
America-is-the-land-of-milk-and-honey-and-lotsa-money-Filipino-
movie-shot-in-the-US bandwagon. What a relief and what a movie.
No Virginia, not every Filipino in America lives the "Am"dream.)

niyo 'kong iko-quote!)

4. Brutal (A slow descent to hell -- and yeah, I took that from S & E! 8-)

5. Insiang (Haven't really seen all of it...just bits and pieces, but from
the looks that could kill of Hilda (ya know), I vote for it!)

just my 2 cents,

JC

Can't think of five offhand. The following are my best so far:

DAHIL SA ISANG BULAKLAK (Charito Solis, Ric Rodrigo, and a very young
and lovely looking Liza Lorena)

TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG (Christopher de Leon, Lolita Rodriguez,
Lito Anzures, and an all-star cast)

IGOROTA (Charito Solis, Vic Vargas, Mario Montenegro) - this won the
FAMAS and ASIA FILM FESTIVAL's Best Picture award

BIYAYA NG LUPA (Leroy Salvador, Charito Solis) - also won ASIA FILM
FESTIVAL award for Best Picture (this is the story of the
"lanzones" fruit, and shot on location in Laguna.

Not having watched most of the movies that have been mentioned in this
thread, I'd like to fork a related one. What are most clever,
profound, or funny Pinoy movie titles that you know? I'll start:

Kakaba-kaba Ka Ba? (Are You Nervous?)
Langis at Tubig (Oil and Water)
Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (You Were Weighed But Not Enough)
Kung Mangarap Ka't Magising (If You Dream and Wake Up)

I guess you have missed some of the most award winning movies in
Philippine cinema.Although they
aren't necessarily in particular order,it
follows:

1.Bata pa si Sabel(?)o Isabel (Gina Alajar)
2.Ang totoong buhay ni Pacita M.(Nora Aunor)
3.Hayop sa Hayop (Hilda Koronel)
4.Pieta (Ace Vergel)
5.Mga Basang Sisiw (The late Julie Vega)

So be it!

Aha! Eh paano naman yong mga best quotes from pinoy mubis? (naku,

line which goes like this:

Dina: "Para kang karinderyang laging bukas sa lahat ng kakain!"

(sampal from Sharon ...."pppppakkk")

Yuck and how baduy!!!!

Eh how about the exena of my sister Roderick Paulate (aka Rhoda Hobarnes):

Tatay: Babae ka ba o lalaki? (galit na galit at hawak si Rhoda sa leeg)

Rhoda: Babae ho.

Tatay: Leche! (sa galit ng tatay, nilublob niya si Rhoda sa isang batya ng
tubig)

Tatay: Magtuus ulit tayo! Babae ka ba o Lalaki? (galit na galit pa rin at
hawak hawak si Rhoda sa leeg)

Rhoda: Bbbba......

Tatay: Leche! Huwag mo nang tapusin ang sasabihin mo. (nilublob na naman niya
si Rhoda sa batya ng tubig. This time, matagal si Rhodang nakalublob
at halos malunod na siya!)

O ngayon, babae ka ba o lalaki?

Rhoda: Sss...ss....sirena ho.

Saan darating ang Umaga? Ito ba 'yung movie ni Maricel
Soriano with Nida Blanca and Raymond Lauchenco? Yes, this
one's good. And another Maricel Soriano is worth mentioning.
I forgot the title but it's the movie which produced the
popular catch phrase "Ayoko ng masikip, ayoko ng mainit,
ayoko ng walang tubig, ayoko ng mabaho!"

Si Elsa! An absolute genuine authentic oriental village doll.
The fact that I can still remember her name in the movie means
that she made a deep impression on me, considering that I am
a 'Dutchman' ;-)

That movie featured in the first (and probably the last)
"South East Asian Film Festival" in Amsterdam last year.

OK, here is my list of the more unusual themes and scenes from some of the better Filipino movies I have seen. The list is only up to 1989 (the year I came here to the states), so if anybody knows of other films which might fit in this category, then join in. Here goes (in random order):

1. Salome (Laurice Guillen)
Gina Alajar "rides" Dennis Roldan and stabs him while he is in orgasm. A treatise on who-is-telling-the-truth..... the same incident as seen by three individuals...... A Manunuri multi-awardee (picture, director, actress).

2. Shake, Rattle, and Roll (Peque Gallaga)
A horror trilogy..... the first story shows Janice de Belen being raped by a refrigerator possessed by the devil..... Cool!

3. Tagos ng Dugo (Maryo delos Reyes)
Vilma Santos becomes a psycho-killer everytime she has her period. She wins the Catholic Mass Media Award for best actress...... Hmmmm, those priest must have seen something I didn't.

4. Burlesk Queen (Celso Ad Castillo)
A good period (1950's) film...... Vilma Santos (again?) belly-dances her way to an abortion..... The film sweeps the awards at the Manila Film Festival.

5. Si Malakas at si Maganda (Danny Zialcita)
Ang T-bird at ako (?)
Ang Tatay kong nanay (Lino Brocka)
Three films with gays as major characters and where they are not portrayed as caricatures.
First film: a gay Dindo Fernando falls for the lesbian Elizabeth Oropesa.... very witty screenplay..... Woody Allen-ish of sorts.
Second film: a lesbian lawyer (Nora Aunor) defends a murder suspect (Vilma Santos) and falls for her.
Third film: a gay father (Dolphy) trying to raise a son (Nino Muhlach).

6. Sister Stella L. (Mike de Leon)
Kapit sa patalim (Lino Brocka)
Minsa'y isang gamu-gamo (?)
Sakada (Behn Cervantes)
Four of handful Filipino films with socio-political themes. The first two deals with the labor problem...... the third tackled the US military bases.... the fourth touched on land reform.

7. Kakabakaba Ka Ba? (Mike de Leon)
A delightful japan- and china-bashing film. Nanette Inventor singing the "Ama Namin" with glittering stockings is hilarious. The best Filipino comedy film I've seen.

8. Kisapmata (Mike de Leon)
Incest...... what could be a more controversial theme. Got very good review in Time magazine when it was shown at Cannes.

9. Himala (Ishmael Bernal)
Nora Aunor as a visionary..... and the commercialization of religion that ensue. Reminds me of what has happened in Agoo, La union when I went home last March.

10. Oro, Plata, Mata (Peque Gallaga)
Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? (Eddie Romero)
Tatlong Taong Walang Dios (?)

Somehow, the physical difficulty of such an act
always struck me as somewhat ludicruous.

To add:

From my own observations (by the way, I haven't watched a pilipino movie
for quite some time now so pardon me if a lot of my following views are
inconsistent with the current movies), there always seems to be violence of
some kind--even/especially in comedy films, starring Dolphy or whoever...

In pilipino dramas, someone usually dies (U.S. dramas don't have as many
deaths, I think, as the pilipino movies do--unless you're talking about
the movie "Glory" or other war movie, of course 8-) ). With pregnant women,
the woman will usually be climbing up the stairs when she slips and has a
miscarriage. Additionally, I think there are a lot of scenes in many
pilipino movies taken in the hospital room (maybe a little too much). How
about those "fairies" with the magical powers? Also, the fast-moving
action scenes where everyone walks ten times faster than you or me, while
some corny music or song is playing? Anyway, these are some of my own
observations... I sure hope that there are more of you out there who agree
with me than there are who do not... 8-)

And don't forget "Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa (The Most
Beautiful Beast on the Face of the Earth)" starring former Ms. Universe
Gloria Diaz. Say, does anyone remember where it was filmed. I know it
was somewhere in the Visayas, and I wonder if the place is still a big tourist
attraction nowadays.

I have seen it (although not on A&E). I enjoyed it, except for the silly subplot
with the hospitality girl chasing the guy because of some phisical attributes he
supposedly had.

This was a British comedey, not american. It is more of a black comedey than
your typical fummy haha american movie ghostbusters or beverly hills cop or
others of that type.

The mood was very dark, the characters pathetic and basically unlikable. Nothing
good happened for any of the brits looking for a wife.

I guess you would prefer a censored, sanitized PC entertainment industry that takes
no risks. I guess all we need is one channel to watch reruns of Threes Company
and the Mary Tyler Moore show huh ?

Yes it was offensive to filipinos, but IMHO even more offensive in it's portrayal
of those pathetic brits (the ones in the moovie). If you find it offensive
you can change the channel. I for one am glad that there is some refuge from
this PC bull####.

Just say no to PC.

You and I must not have been watching the same show,
because it wasn't funny, I'm not some PC nut, but this
was really pathetic portrail of anyone. The "good"
filipina in the move, was still shown as a prostitue

I really don't consider that "Arts and Entertainment"

By the way, who cares about bad portrails of people
` who would engage in a show that sanatizes a sex tour
industry (don't give me that they were looking for
wives, because you don't go to a gogo bar to find your
wife).....
