AGBAYANI IS CHOSEN AS UH DISTINGUISHED
ALUMNA
Joining the ranks of the "chosen few" as this year's University
of Hawai=C6i=C6s Distinguished Alumni awardee is Dr. Amefil
"Amy" Agbayani, AB'63, a Filipino activist fighting for
education rights among the minorities in Hawai=C6i.
Agbayani, along with four other alumni, will be honored
during the UH Alumni Association's annual dinner in May. The
Distinguished Alumni Award, sponsored annually by UHAA, is
one of the most prestigious awards given to former UH students
for their professional accomplishment and significant service to
UH and the community.
The first Filipina from the Philippines to win this award,
Agbayani is also the first Filipino to earn a doctorate in Political
Science from the University of Hawai'i.
Dr. Agbayani is director of Student, Equity, Excellence and
Diversity (SEED), an office under the UH Vice-President for
Student Affairs. She says that she heads one of the few offices
that has its mission statement in its name. "My office seeks to
have UH, the only state-supported institution of higher education
in Hawai=C6i promote Student, Equity, Excellence, and Diversity.
UH cannot achieve excellence if it does not provide for equal
opportunity for all students, including under-represented groups
like Filipinos and Hawaiians" she explains. The programs that
report to SEED include: Operation Manong, a recruitment
program for Filipino and other under-represented student groups;
Kua'ana for Hawaiian students; KOKUA for students with
disabilities; College Opportunities Program; Women's Center;
Center for Adults returning to Education; and the Regent and
Presidential Scholarship Program.
Fresh with her PhD degree in 1969, Agbayani helped start
Operation Manong, which at that time worked primarily in the
public schools helping tutor Filipino immigrant children. She
describes her position at OM as mostly administrative; however,
she also became part of the teaching force handling an Ethnic
Studies class on immigration to Hawai=C6i. "I actually found out I
liked administrative work better than teaching and I had to be
involved in administrative campus and community politics so
that OM could get funded and continue at UH," she recalls.
Five years ago, she was part of the official UH group when
the UP-UH exchange agreement was signed by UP President
Jose Abueva and UH President Albert Simone.
Agbayani believes that her greatest contribution to the
Filipino community has been her work getting more Filipinos to
college. "The disadvantaged position of the Filipino community
can be improved if we have many more Filipinos with college
degrees. I also think my work with the Hawai=C6i Civil Rights
Commission is important because I am in the position to help
Filipinos, women and others who have experienced
discrimination," says Agbayani, current chairwoman of the
Hawai=C6i Civil Rights Commission since 1990.
Over the years, she has written and published research works
on Filipino immigration and other related issues. She was a
recipient of the 1990 Distinguished Alumna Award from the
East-West Center where she enjoyed a scholarship grant during
the course of her graduate work. Agbayani, a Honolulu YWCA
outstanding achievement awardee in 1989, is also active in a
number of civic and community activities. She was the 1991
president of the UP Alumni Association-Hawaii Chapter.
