Hello everyone,

Does anyone have any information about Aswangs, Nonosapunso or other
mythological creatures?

Specifically, I am looking for information concerning "evil" type creatures and
the harm they do to humans or any other similar kind of Filipino superstition.

Thanks

Those Aswangs, Manananggal and Nuno sa Punso are just mere make belief. If you
really want to find the real ones, hang-out with politicians, police officers,
soldiers, customs officials and baranggay tanods back home. That's where you
will find most of them and will actually see them harm the citizens. And that
is not a myth nor a legend. Those type of people I just mentioned are the real
FLESH EATERS and BLOOD SUCKERS.

Better watch out y'all!!!

smokes his tabako? Ito daw ay friendly at mahilig manligaw ng butipul
maidens. Sabi ng lola ko, yung nanay niya ay niligawan ng kapre who would
would tap at their nipa hut at night, and leave behind fruits as gifts.
Sabi ko, kapre pala ang great grand papa ko ! heheheeee

Yung tikbalang naman eh yung kabayo who blows fire from his nostrils. Very

you're right....a kapre refers to a giant hairy creature, smoking a huge
cigar.

tikbalang is a demon-horse...a fire breathing one.

the bottomline is that both are demonic creatures...

You're right, MTG. But IMHO, the half-man, half-pig creature is the most eveil
and demonic of all. :x

Like I mentioned in my original post, my sources were the old timers living in
Virginia. I now realize that different versions of these creatures exist in
different regions of the Philippines. We have barely scratched the surface but
still it was very educational for me. More, please.

Here are a few more filipino lore characters you can add to your collection
of naughty creatures:

1. Tiyanak - A baby ghoul, usually a boy, sunken eyes and haunts places
where babies were supposed to have been buried without the benefit of a
christian burial. Also babies who died without having been baptized;
includes aborted fetus. They come back to exact revenge on mother or father
or person causing their untimely death. One hears them crying and faking a
distressed baby, to lure the unsuspecting victim, usually adults. Can be
laid to rest by blessing of the grave.

2. Sirena - Pinay counterpart of the mermaid - half woman / half fish.
The upper torso is usually human, but it can also be the reverse ... that
is, waist downwards is human with fish torso. Their victims are usually
young handsome men who they take back with them to the deep. The are also
fond of little boys and little girls. They are more often blamed for
disappearances at sea or a river. They are said to have favorite places, to
which people keep away from for fear of being taken. Lures victims by her
sweet singing voice. Stay away from suspected waters or haunts.

(2A) Siokoy - the male counterpart of the Sirena is less popular. He is
ugly, scaly from head to toe, sports feet, not a fish tail, and has the face
of a fish, fins on his spine, and is green, sometimes brown. Not likely
real when compared to the Sirena.

3. Engkanto - Unseen enchantresses, fay, un-winged. They take on the
form of a human female to lure handsome men. Seems like they are always in
search of true love, but at the end are always end up victimized, unto which
they wreck their vengeance on the offending male. They are said to guard
lakes and rivulets or mountains / hills. Example is Maria Makiling. They
are also said to be friendly to humans and help in their time of need. They
guard the environment and they hate loggers and destroyers and spoilers of
nature. They guard riches and treasures nobody can find. They lead a
person to this treasure if they find favor with him (again, often menfolk.)
Can't do nothing to counter but to simply stay away from their domain.

4. Mambabarang

Human and similar to the Mangkukulam / Manggagamod/ Manggagamot. Both cast
hexes and spells on their victims. The difference: The Mangkukulam casts a
magic spell that makes a person very sick, lose weight, hallucinate, grow
skin rashes or grow some deformity, using voodoo dolls in combination with
needles or knives or any pointed or sharp object, or the simple touch or
"tapik," or passing infected or hexed food to the intended victim. They say
that when somebody "tapiks" you, you have to "tapik" back to counter any
malicious spell. They make use of personal articles, hair, or anything that
has touched the intended victims body in making the voodoo doll. A contra
kulam that I've seen my grandma keep with her at all times was the anay's
(termite) black stone. Also, I think, the petrified "atis" is another
contra (not sure about the this one though.)

The spell of a Mambabarang on the other hand cause articles to suddenly
appear within the innards, stomach, intestines or the victim. These items
are usually in form or roaches, ants, slugs, insects that get out of the
body through the mouth, the vagina, the anus. They are also, in many cases
made to exit the body through sores and festering ulceration, wounds and
boils, until the victims dies. Makes use of personal articles, especially
panties left drying in he clothesline by the victim.

Both types are said to bind their heads with a cloth wound tightly during
church days of obligation, like sunday, good friday, etc. due to the extreme
pain they suffer during these religious days. Both types can either be male
or female.

One fights the mangkukulam by exorcism. More potent than the use of blessed
items is scourging the victim using a manta ray's or devilfish's tail
(buntot-pa-ge) until the witch lets up the spell. I haven't heard anything
or way to battle the mambabarang.

The following items are not human, ghouls, or spirits ... but they can
qualify as part of filipino lore.

5. Bolang Apoy - ball of fire that can transform a person to possess
super human strength, cunning and ken, if he is able to capture it. This
one is said to appear regardless of the day of the year, vis the agimat
which is bestowed only during Good Fridays.

6. Agimat (ng puso ng Saging) - This is not a creature but an object that
renders the same as the Bolang Apoy, plus invisibility. The agimat can only
be acquired by a person of strong character and physical strength and
tenacity. The latter quality is most important because of the "pagsubok" or
trial that he will have to undergo before he takes finally keeps the agimat.
One can only hope to acquire this agimat at midnight on Good Friday and not
on any other day. At the strike of midnight, the "puso ng saging" opens up
and releases the agimat. A person must be under the tree at the right time
to catch the agimat with his mouth untouched, and then swallowing it <or
keeping it in his mouth???>. Immediately after this is done, a Tikbalang
will appear to wrest back the agimat from the person and a battle ensues. A
person with a strong character, internal and physical strength and goodness,
will usually overcome the Horse creature. They will battle until dawn and
only then if the person prevails will be keep the agimat for good. The
agimat is said to leave a person who turns to evil ways and uses it to do
bad.

7. Dilá ng Kidlat - A sharp, flat, shale and pointed stone, said to be
the end of a lightning striking the ground or a tree. Can be found on the
site of a lightning strike petrified and imbedded. Possession of such
provides the owner with great medicinal powers.

8. Anting-anting - anything that renders extraordinary powers to a
possessor. Examples are medals and medallions, books, scapulars, blessed
candles, blessed or saintly artifacts, dried umbilical cords, snake molts
(scales / skin), teeth and claws (Boar, bear, dog, bat, etc.). Usually
given and acquired from engkantos, or duwendes, or hermits, or
"manggagalings," or priests.

I am not sure if you'll consider this as a lore:

9. The Dancing Santo Niño - contemporary miraculous statuettes of the
child Jesus that dances. Many articles have been written about these
phenomenon, recounting hundreds of manifestations from north to south. I
have a distant cousin who as a young boy of 8 or 9, use to disappear for
days --- then would tell his parents when he shows up that he has been with
the Santo Niño travelling far and wide over the islands by flying in the
air. He would in many cases suddenly undergo a change in demeanor and speak
like one in authority in a different voice and start healing the sick. I
have always been a skeptic, but that did not seem to bother him at all. He
is no a teen-ager, no longer as he use to be, and says he lost his "mission"
when he started to date girls. Similar situation with another relative who
also narrated the Santo Niño in her room coming to life at night and talking
to her, making her do things as her "mission." She'd heal people by laying
hands on them, but like the former, she was relieved of her "mission" when
she chose to get married. The Niño, however, vowed to return and work with
one of her children later on. I'm still waiting and watching if this will
come to pass.

He he he,

Kidding aside, I wrote a paper on aswangs in my Anthropology class and also did
a presentation. Basically, they are our version of the vampire. There are lots
of similarities between the two.
I did most of my research on the web and talked to some older relatives who
swear like sailors, that there are such things.
Good luck!

Same here. Did you read the thread started by AC? We found out we barely
scratched the surface with all the nice, additional info that came in. I didn't
even know about the kapre until then.
