I read something in the news that I found quite amusing.

Bert "Tawa" Marcelo (you know, the comedian who looks a bit like Sir
John Gielgud (sp.?) who laughs backwards ... as in "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah")
intends to run for Governor of Bulacan in 1995.

The funny thing is.... he's serious.

Even funnier... Erap endorsed him...!

And the funniest... he's a shoo-in to win.

I'm pretty sure San Miguel will sponsor this.
mag-beer muna ta-yo...! <hic> (ala Mang Bert)

>Jim, please allow me to provide an insight or perspective on Bert
>Marcelo which a lot of people probably do not know.

>Bert Marcelo was an avid political animal before he ventured into
>the entertainment field (as a comedian and tv host). I should know --
>he used to be a classmate of mine at the Far Eastern University
>(Institute of Arts & Sciences). This was during the late 60s. He
>was a late bloomer in college; however, when he decided to be active,
>he came out with such passion, such vengeance, that almost everybody,
>including me, were left wondering what he was up to.

Mang Bert's fiery talumpati (shown on TV many times, in jest) or his
intelligence is not in question... It's just that after many profitable
years of playing a buffoon (albeit a likeable and good natured one) a lot
of people would find it hard to take him seriously. On the other hand, this
is Philippine politics after all, I don't have any doubt he will win
handily, as has been the experience of many "artistas" turned politicians.
Perhaps one bizarre result of his candidacy will be he'll register the
"Tawa" monicker with the Comelec so that a vote for Bert "Tawa" Marcelo
would be valid... as was the case of Cong. Ralph Recto (hubby of Vilma
Santos) who registered "Mr. Vilma Santos" with the Comelec.

But if Mang Bert proves to be a good governor of Bulacan after all, then all's
well that ends well, no?

Other artistas in politics:

Tito Sotto - Senate (erstwhile toilet humorist with Tito, Vic, and Joey)
Ramon Revilla - Senate (former Nardong Putik wanna-be)
Freddie Webb - Senate (see him weekly on Chicks to Chicks)
Joseph Estrada - Vice President (who needs no introduction, especially to
humorists)
Joey Marquez - Vice Mayor of Paranaque (weekly role as a cretin on
Palibhasa Lalake... now married to Alma "thighs" Moreno)
Chiquito - (vice mayor of Makati?? duhh.)
Herbert "Bistek" Bautista - councilor for Quezon City

... and many more...

Erap has reportedly egged FPJ to run for mayor of Quezon City... but the
sideburned one turned down the offer.

There's also a rumor that Vilma Santos will run for either Congress or
Senate.

>One big blot on his political record: he became a rabid supporter of
>the Marcoses [too bad!].

Turns out that didn't really hurt some people in show business. Other
celebrity Marcos supporters/campaigners:

Martin Nievera
German Moreno
Elizabeth Oropesa
Hajji Alejandro
Rio Diaz
Florante
Alona Alegre

However, in the case of Oropesa, Alejandro, Diaz, Florante (de Leon), and
Alegre, they expressed their support just a wee too much to the point of being
associated with the Marcos loyalist movement. Consequently, they spent the Cory
years in exile abroad. Most of them are back though, with the exception of
Florante and Alona Alegre.

-- end of juicy showbiz/political tidbits.

before these two guys became artistas though, they were established
professional basketball players.
