Gary Lising at least *claimed* he was from Ateneo... which was why he was
part of that comedy troupe called "WalangHiyaTalaga" that morphed into
"Champoy" later on and made the leap from dinner theatre to television...
This included Subas Herrero, Noel Trinidad, Jun Urbano (the Mongolian
Boxer) who were all classmates in the 60's. The exception was probably
Tessie Tomas, then from the advertising biz, who was from U.P.... Tessie
had more staying power as a comic because she was able to cross over into
more mass-based humor. Another good young comic now from the U.P. is Jon
Santos, also very popular. Tessie and Jon do very good standup, which is
not typical of pinoy comedy which is normally based on pratfalls, slapstick
and toilet humor.

Back to Gary, one of the typical jokes Gary Lising would tell when
everytime he visited for one of those free campus shows during the college
fair was the story of how he asked a Jesuit how he could apply to join the
Jesuits. Upon being informed about the vow of celibacy, he boasted, "No
problem father, I can handle being celibate. Why, I celibate every day!"
((snare drum rimshot)) ok, that's not funny, but it *seemed* funny then....

As for for "Dyords" Javier, the legend was that he was so notorious for his
pranks and stunts (you could call him the class clown) that he was
specifically warned by then president Fr. Joe Cruz, S.J. that if he tried
anything funny during the graduation ceremonies, he would be banned from
the Loyola Heights campus for life. I guess Dyords couldn't help it because
for graduation day he shaved his head, and kept this fact hidden under
his graduation cap (yung kasama sa toga, nakalimutan ko lang ngayon kung
ano ang tawag dito). When Dyords took the stage to receive his diploma
(again, legend has it that he took 7-8 years before getting his AB
Interdisciplinary Studies degree)... he took of his cap, bowed, and exposed
his shaved head for all to see.... This was in the 70's, where all the guys
had real long hair,so it was such an unusual sight that the graduating
class broke up into such rollicking laughter (or ROTFL as we say here) that
the solemnity of the ceremonies was broken. Fr. Cruz made good his promise
and from then on, Dyords Javier was banned from the campus. Unlike the APO
Hiking Society, who would return to the campus to do shows, Dyords could
never return.... well that's how the story goes anyway.

We used to go thru old copies of the Aegis (Ateneo yearbook) back when we
were editing the yearbook and I remember seeing Dyords' picture in the 1974
edition. Seeing that it's now 20 years later, it's amazing that the legend
of Dyords and his shaved head still lives on....

Of course, if Dyords was to shave his head today (and put a diamond stud in
his nose besides) he'd be hip... everybody say hey... ho .... hey... ho...

The legend goes that this incident is why we Ateneans don't wear
caps to our graduation anymore. :)
