Bakit nga ba ganito ang mga Pilipino. Kapag may magandang title ang mga
kano, ito'y ginagaya ng mga Pilipino. Gaya-gaya. Wala na ba tayong mga
originality?

Huwag mo namang lahatin. Ang Pinoy ay kilala rin sa originality
at innovation.

Taking an existing idea or product and improving it, is often the way
to go these days. In fact that is being encouraged by companies and
they call it the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP). In CIP sessions,
the trainer gets anything (e.g. a pen, an eraser, a chair, a glass,
etc.) and asks the participants to come up with as many ideas as
possible on how it can be improved to get your creative juices flowing.
Isn't Windows patterned after Apple’s point and click user-friendly
interface? Who came up with the first spreadsheet package? Not Lotus,
not Microsoft. Who came up with the first personal computer? Not IBM,
not HP, not Compaq. I could cite many more products and ideas which are
now very successful but are in no way THE original. As one ad proudly
proclaims - "We are not the original, but we are the best."
It is also the way by which countries fast-track the development of
their industries. Did Japan invent the automobile, the quartz watch,
the TV and so on and so forth? Yet, look at how their brands are
dominating the world market. Korea followed-suit and now they have
world class Hyundai and Samsung. China is into it as well. The
Philippines should learn from its neighbors.
Think about it.

Just a minor correction. Windows and the Mac GUI were improvements of the
Xerox GUI projects of the 70's. Apple sued MS in the late 80's for
allegedly copying the Mac. Apple lost the case because the judge said to
the effect, "Bakit ka nagde-demanda e pareho naman kayong manggagaya."
Also the main Windows improvement over the Mac is the deletion paradigm.

The quartz watch was invented by the Swiss. But they dismissed the
invention as a toy so they lost the opportunity. The Swiss failed to
identify the paradigm shift.

This is the one statement that I thought was most
important. Imitation is a tool to leaprog obsolete
or near-obsolete technologies and saves a lot of R&D
money. However, the advanced countries know this too
and the race is on to develop products that use
high-technology materials unavailable to cheap labor
countries like the Philippines.
For example, the future generation of cars will
most likely use high strength/weight ratio materials
like carbon composites, plastics, and aluminum. Steel
will only be used for the chassis. If we were to
build such a car, a good majority of the parts will
still be imported since they cannot be fabricated at
home. This drives the cost of the car up which may
put it out of competition unless something else is
reduced. Almost always, it's the employee's salary
that will suffer.
There are specific areas where imitation is
advantageous and it would be dangerous to try and
apply it to all kinds of industries.
