Can anyone tell me if writing in Tagalog requires non-English characters,
i.e. diacriticals or some such, and if special fonts are necessary for
that (and where they could be obtained from)?

:-) Dirk

Strictly speaking, Tagalog and Filipino require the use of three
diacritics: grave, acute, and circumflex. These are available in all
fonts that have the latin character set. The easiest way to access
these marks is to set your keyboard to International (in control
panel). However, almost all writing today are done without putting the
required marks. Tagalog is now de facto accentless. This drives the
purists crazy, especially a friend of mine who is a Parisian and a
Tagalist. He grew up seeing diacritics in his native language and is
furious that Tagalog is now virtually diacritic-free.

Most modern readers of Tagalog are not bothered by the lack of accents
because they are taught English in schools from an early age. They
rely on context to resolve ambiguity in Tagalog. They wouldn't even
know what the accents stand for if you use them.

From what I gather, the extended ABKADA already has "c", "n", and "ll"

No. Writing in Tagalog (Pilipino) doesn't require non-English
or non-alphabets, to be more precise. If there are 26 letters
in the alphabets, Pilipino requires less than that. There is
no "c", "f", "q", "v", "x", and "z".
