Gusto ko lang malaman kung anong klaseng mountaineering meron dyan sa
Pilipinas. I have seen some websites regarding this matter, pero all of them
only deal with backpacking/trekking and maybe some rockclimbing. Mahilig din
kasi ako mag-hiking at backpacking and a little rockclimbing, but i do not
consider myself a true mountaineer. But I'm still dreaming of becoming one,
someday. I just want to know if the term "mountaineering" is used in a
different context or if there really are places in the Philippines to go
mountaineering?

Galing na rin ako sa Mt Arayat. 'been there when i was in seventh grade. and
since then, I've bagged quite a few more peaks.. But still, I'm no
mountaineer. I guess what I should have asked was, Is there any technical
mountaineering routes in the Philippines?

And no, I am not a novice.

The famous there is Mt. Apo in Mindanao but there is only a problem of peace
and order. If you want some thrill, why not climb the peak of Mt. Mayon in
Daraga, Albay. I think nobody dare to try that.

Simply when one goes to a mountain, a "protrusion with an elevation," he does
mountaineering. Which in the Philippines is mainly trekking, hiking and a little
of rock climbing. Mountaineers usually are self-contained with provisions for
food, shelter and clothing. Climbs are usually in groups, in clubs, or just
barkada and arranged on weekends (overnight) in popular mountains with
established trails. Some treks are easy others difficult and dangerous.

I are not aware of benchmarks when one can be called a true mountaineer. Some
say when they have climbed heights over 10,000 feet ASL, or when they climb once
a month, or climbed at least 50 peaks or when one feels at home in the setting
and can survive with the adversities.

The principles of mountaineering are universal. The only difference if the type
of mountains. We have tropical mountains, Europe has alpine, the Himalayas, also
alpine.

I'll post your question in a Philippine based news group so you'll get varying
points of view.

ahhhh, kita ko na yung point mo. saka nakita ko na rin yung website nyo. nice!

now i have a new set of questions to ask. sakali mang maka-uwi ako sa
Pilipinas in the near future, meron bang mabibilhan ng supplies for some of my
gear? i have a "camping gaz" stove that uses a CV270 cannister. available ba
yun dyan? at kung meron, magkano naman? am i better off getting a local
version that perfoms the same job.
as much as possible, i try to avoid making a camp fire to lessen my impact on
nature. i hope you and your organization do the same thing. LEAVE NO TRACE,
ika nga. also, i have a "PUR hiker" water filter. meron bang binebentang
replacement cartridge para sa ganung filter? at kung meron, magkano? other
than that, ok na ako. o yan. reply kayo agad, ha?

Hindi yata mountaineering ang hanap mo kundi hitch hiking. If you want some
camping, try the Mount Makiling in Laguna. Or if you are really fond of hiking
then try the Cordelliera Mountains and face the head hunter of the Kalinga
Apayao. That is more adventure than Indiana Jones.
