Don't forget "The Party Machine!" Actually, I kinda knew that she had some
Pinay blood.

Lou Diamond Phillips was born in the Philippines, and comes from a Filipino/
Hawaiian/Irish (hence the 'Phillips' name) ancestry.

No Way?! Way! I knew this all along. What was sad that on the Tonight Show
back in '92, she said she was "Hawaiian."

REALLY?!?!?!
My name is Prince...and I am Pinoy!

Okay...
Jaya -- Remember a dance song back in 89-90 called "If You Leave
Me Now" ? It was produced by Stevie B and sung by
Jaya (real name Maria Ramsey). She is half Afro-
American, half Pinay. If that last name is familliar,
she is the daughter of Pilipino singer/comedienne
Elizabeth Ramsey.
I met Jaya back in Dec '90. In fact, my band and
Jaya opened up for one of her mom's concerts here
in Los Angeles. She also, briefly went to my
high school (!) Though I did not know her at the time.
She has since gotten married to Stevie B's drummer -
a Filipino guy...They live in Florida now, and she
has since left the record industry.
Rob Schneider -- If you watch "Saturday Night Live," you've probably
seen the skit with the nerdy, eccentric office worker
named Rich Laymer, who greets his co-workers with,
"Steve! Steve-O! Steveorini!...Bob! The Bobmeister!" et
al...Well, his mom is a Filipina. He even revealed this
in a talk show (Letterman?). A recent SNL "Mother's
Day" special showing the cast members with their moms
also showed off his mom on the show. Schneider was
also the bellboy in "Home Alone 2" and is also in
the current film, "The Coneheads."
Hmmm...wonder why we can't get any FULL BLOODED Flips out there.

Tia Carrere -- the Wayne's World megababe claims Chinese/Spanish/

that he's Italian, black, Filipino, and a host of

Phoebe Cates has Filipino ancestry? Wow! That explains why her posters
are the single-most popular ones throughout the Philippines! I mean,
they're everywhere. . . . in tricycles, jeepneys, store display windows,
bedroom walls of adolescent boys and girls alike, etc! I take a trip
to the Philippines each year, and I go to various places (Bicol region,
Bacolod, Zamboanga, and Cebu during the last 3 years), and Phoebe's
posters are also there!
By the way, do you know the origin of her Filipino ancestry? Is it her
mom who is a Filipina? Is it her dad? Please pray tell.
Thanks.

I read somewhere some years back that Racquel [sp.] Welch also has
Filipino origin, and that her real name is Racquel Tejada.

Raquel Welch's real name IS raquel Tejada, but she is of Mexican
origin.
That's right -- Ernie Reyes, Jr. is his name. He wasn't in Karate Kid, but he
was in such films as "Red Sonja," the short-lived TV show "SideKicks" and
as an older teenager (the pizza delivery boy) in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Part II."
Oh yeah...another one:
Pia Manalo -- If you watch PBS' children's show "Barney & Friends" (hey, I
have a 4 year old brother, okay!), Barney the Dinosaur
spends time with a multiracial group of children - The
Asian girl, named "Min" is played by 6-year old Pia Manalo,
an obviously Filipino name.
Pardon me for showing my slip, but I should have qualified my statement there.
It was a conjecture based on remarks I've heard from a number of people with
regards to her Filipino ancestry, and on reading a couple of articles way way
back (same goes for including Prince). And that's why in my original post,
I end it by soliciting for corrections, reactions, etc...I guess we're still
waiting for that God-will-send individual to share with the group his/her
definitive scoop on Phoebe Cates and her Filipino (un)connection.
Cheers!

Then there's Tai Babilonia, figure skater in the early 80's.
There is this character in Baywatch who plays a foreigner
that flirts with every women on the beach. I forgot his
name but during one of the morning game shows, Family Feud,
he said he was Filipino and "proud of it". His character is
a sort of bumbling, funny, Cassanova, who turns out to be
married to a big woman.
What about the girl in the musical group Expose', ? Jurado,
is she Pinay? She looks it.

I thought she was only born in the Philippines...

Jeanette Jurado. She hails from El Monte, CA...Her ethnicity is
questionable. I've heard questionable reports that she's Filipina
(one person said he was related to her), others say she's Latina...
Anyone remember that show "Out Of This Word," about this girl whose
father is an alien from outer space? There's this character that plays
their neighbor, named "Buzz," Played by Buzz Belmondo, who was even
a guest on "The Arsenio Hall Show" (or the old FOX "Late Show") and
mentioned he was Filipino in his stand-up comedy act, complete with
Marcos/Imelda jokes!

Sad but true. That's gotta change one day...
Hmmm...that inspires me to send my demo tape out and play live
more often. :)
Elson, thanks a lot.
The guy's name in Baywatch is Belmondo, kulot ang
buhok at meztiso 'di ba?
I read some time ago that Tai had Filipino blood. Anyway, I
think she doesn't claim to be Filipina like Tia Carere, maybe
people with first names that have the initials T-I-A have
denial syndrome. :-)
Nia Peoples, also is Pinay, I wonder if she half denies being
Pinay. Almost the same initials, eh.

You're wrong, Phoebe Cates is the product of a white man with a Chinese woman,
like anybody cares anyhow.
Anyhow, add Nia Peeples to the picture.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
where I screwed up, didn't notice the prologue.
Though he ain't a babe as the others above are, he's hapa too: D.B. Wong, the
Chinese guy who played the lead in David Henry Hwang's "M. Butterfly" and who
also played Martin Short's assistant in Steve Martin's "Father of the Bride."
His mom is Filipino, and he grew up in San Francisco. I think he's come out in
other stuff, too, but almost always as a Chinese character and not as anyone
Filipino. Which is highly understandable since his Chinese features are more
pronounced than his Filipino features.
Jiffin
Hmm, now that's fresh news. B.D. Wong also plays the scientist describing the
cloning of dinosaur eggs to Sam Neill et al in (oh no!) Jurassic Park. Am I
glad he's half-Filipino!
JC
Alec Mapa, B.D.'s successor to the "M. Butterfly" role, is also Filipino.
Rumor has it that he'll be doing the film version. (I got this from a friend
who was his understudy. BTW, he's Filipino too.)
Hmm, is it mere coincidence that they all are from the Bay Area?

Right! And also a promising young lady named Mary Ann Dionisio who will be
playing the lead in the Canadian version of Miss Saigon. Ms. Dionisio recently
had the honor of appearing in the front cover of MacLeans magazine - the
Canadian version of Time magazine. Quite an accomplishment!
The first time I saw the original post I knew there was a Barbara Luna during the 70's
but I thought she was more into drama opposites Pepito Rodriguez, Ramir Rodriguez,
Eddie Rodriguez, and others (can't remember)....

Morena Corwin's name is familiar. Since I don't get the Playboy Channel

Could be. What do actors do between periods of national exposure?
Here's all I know: Barbara Luna was in the Broadway production and
the film of "South Pacific" as one of the Frenchman's half-Polynesian
children (they sing "Dites-a-Moi" with Nellie Forbush). She's since
been on TV from time to time in various TV episodes, (like the Star
Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" and) in shows like M*A*S*H where they need
a classy Asian/Eurasian/exotic woman to be the love interest. Because
she's hapa she is able to play more roles. (Nancy Kwan gets cast in
similar roles.) Recently she was regularly on "One Life to Live" I
think but I don't know if she's still there. Her career has spanned
decades, so she's probably been everywhere.
Sorry for the longwindedness, but IMHO she's one of the classiest-
looking women on TV.

Send me the scanner and I'll send you the pictures. :-)
The actress you are referring to is not Barbara Luna. The one who appeared
in the movies back in the 60s and 70s is Barbara Perez who still appears
in movies every now and then - as a mother, aunt, or older sister.

This was a looong time ago - probably during the early 80's. Copies in MNL were
kinda scarce because of Macoy's anti-porn campaign during that time. So it
might be quite difficult to find a copy.
Hi, I'm new to the group - some pretty interesting discussions going
on in here! Anyway, I didn't realize that the Reyes' were that well
known. Just wanted to add that they've got a martial arts studio
somewhere around San Jose. My brother was looking for a school and
he ran across theirs - he said there were pics of Ernie Jr. and the
TMNT stuff around. I think he may have even seen Jr. teaching a
class (?).

Ok, who was the one that had the part of "Eponine" on a more recent
production of "Les Miserables" in New York? I heard that she was
filipino. I think she's also the same one who sang the Alladin song
at the Academy Awards this year - not sure if she sang in the movie, though.

That would be Lea Salonga, star of the London/Broadway productions of
"Miss Saigon," now doing Les Mis. Yes, it was her voice in the (song)
soundtrack for "Aladdin" (the dialogue voice was another actress).
She reprised the song at the Academy Awards.
On the subject of Filipinos in musicals, the guy who played 'Nardo in
the movie version of "West Side Story" (Natalie Wood's boyfriend before
she meets Tony and who kills Tony at the end) was Filipino.
Anyone remember his name? Was he in the Broadway production? He toured
a production of "Talk Story" (a Fil-Am play) on the West Coast a few
years ago and recently died of AIDS-related causes.
WYD '93 (in Denver, Colorado) is all set for next week, beginning
on Aug. 11 and culminating with a Papal mass on Aug. 15. Because of
the selection above, the Filipino contingent will probably get quite
a bit of visibility. There will be a potluck picnic for out-of-state
Pinoys on Sunday, Aug. 8. The numbers to call for more info are
Susie Garcia (303) 750-7334, Gloria Castillo (303) 343-0622 and
Manny Avante (303) 337-1221 [I don't know these people, I just read
their announcement].
I know that there are several readers of this newsgroup who will
be there, so if any of you need more information, just let me
know.
