Hotel manager in trouble over
scuffle with solon

By Danilo P. Lucas and Joel San Juan
Reporters

THEY SAY the more vicious a critic, the more cowardly he is in
person. This was not the case yesterday with Makati Rep. Joker
Arroyo (Ind.) and Today publisher and editor in chief Teodoro
"Teddyboy" Locsin Jr.
Locsin, who writes scathing columns and editorials in his paper
aside from being a TV host of ABS-CBN's Assignment, figured in a
fistfight Wednesday night with a still unidentified foreigner at the
lobby of the Manila Peninsula hotel in Makati City.
A staunch government critic, Arroyo's role in the fistfight started
as
peacemaker as he tried to break up the fight.
Locsin and the foreigner from further harm.
But soon enough, Arroyo got angry with the hotel manager for
allegedly shoving him, causing him to fall down on the floor.
Deport the manager
Yesterday, the Makati legislator demanded the deportation of the
hotel manager, Peter Hans Schori, whom he accused of being "racist
and arrogant" for defending and letting the foreigner go without any
charges.
Also, he filed a complaint of physical injuries against the hotel
manager for warding him off during the commotion at the hotel's
lobby around 10:10 p.m.
Schori is a Swiss national who serves as duty manager of the
five-star hotel from 4 p.m. to 12 midnight daily.
Fight over Coke
According to police investigator SPO2 Romeo Ubaña, the
commotion started after the foreigner banged a softdrinks can on the
table of Arroyo who was with Locsin and two Inquirer columnists,
Adrian Cristobal and Conrado de Quiros.
Locsin stood up and asked the foreigner what was the matter with
him. "What's so funny, big shot?" Locsin and Arroyo quoted the
foreigner as saying. Locsin then advanced toward the Caucasian to
move him farther away from Arroyo.
The foreigner theng of Pop, hits Manila by storm ensued.
Schori said that as he stepped in to break the fight, he
accidentally
hit Arroyo.
Locsin sustained injury in his eye, the left side of his neck, and
shoulders.
Schori denied that he sided with the unidentified foreigner, saying
his intention was only to break the fight. He said he never knew any
of the parties involved.
Swiss version
Schori told investigators he was at the lobby when he heard shouts
and saw two men fighting.
He said he rushed immediately to the scene to break the fight.
"They were high-tempered and very anxious to hit the one on the
right (foreigner). I tried to separate them [so] no one would get
hurt,"
Schori said.
After sensing the situation was getting out of control, Schori
called
the hotel security officer Lt. Omer A. Bicol to expel the foreigner
who was escorted to the hotel's landing area. Then he heard a man
threaten him with deportation.
The man, he said, turned out to be Arroyo.
After several minutes, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay arrived at the
said hotel and asked Schori to submit himself to the police.
Locsin, Arroyo and Binay are all good friends. Arroyo and Locsin
served in the Cabinet of former President Aquino.
Having fun
The Makati lawmaker said he and Locsin decided to have dinner at
the Manila Peninsula after attending a book launching Wednesday
night.
Inside the hotel, they chanced upon Cristobal and De Quiros who
joined them in their table.
While having dinner, the lawmaker said they were having fun
talking about Locsin's "depressing" television show Assignment, and
his receding hairline.
Arroyo said he did not know whether the foreigner was irked by the
fact that they were having fun. Arroyo said he was more angry with
the hotel manager.
In his turf
The legislator recalled that the duty manager ignored him even
after
he had introduced himself as congressman of Makati.
"I am the congressman of this district and I do not want any
untoward incident to happen in my district," he recalled saying to
the
foreigner.
He complained about the protection given by the hotel manager to
the foreigner.
When the scuffle ended, Arroyo said, the hotel manager did not
even bother to call for a cop, prompting him (Arroyo) to call for
one.
Unfortunately, the foreigner was already out of the hotel when the
Makati police arrived.

=================
Dec. 6, 1996

Teddy Boy Locsin is my publisher---my being TODAY's correspondent in
Los Angeles.
I've met Joker Arroyo numerous times (before the 1986 CIA-inspired
EDSA Revolution---if we could call it that) in the past.
And I've known Jojo Binay since the early days when he was one of
Nemesio Prudente's lawyer and I was a reporter for the only anti-Marcos
national newspaper, Malaya. In fact, Jojo and I were neighbors in
Makati's San Antonio Village.
Having known them for who they are, I greatly admire these three
individuals for their professionalism and nationalism.
That foreigner at the Manila Pen was lucky the twins and I were not
around that night.
When I first went back to the Philippines in 1989---after fleeing to
Los Angeles on a self-imposed exile in early 1985---the first thing I
did after arriving in Manila was to ask my twin cousins, Johnny and
James, to come with me to Ermita, then known as the "tourist belt."
"Anong gagawin natin doon?" asked James, the silent type of the two.
With a Colt .380 tucked under my waistline and concealed by my photo
vest, I replied: "I HAVE THIS TREMENDOUS URGE TO KICK SOME AMERICAN ASS
TODAY. IF POSSIBLE, IN FRONT OF THE U.S. EMBASSY."
"Fuck the Americans. Why waste our precious time?" cried Johnny, the
impatient one.
Yeah, right.
The three of us ended up drinking about a dozen pitchers of
margarita (probably the best with a strong kick at that) at Tia Maria
along the Makati Avenue strip.
As the popular saying among alcohol drinkers go: "If it taste like
water---it kicks like a horse."
The three of us got kicked by the strong margarita instead.
And luckily for us too, we didn't see a single Gringo at Tia Maria
that night.
All's well that ends well............except for the big hangover we
had the next morning.

John Shinn,

While your account of the old days is certainly interesting, if not rather
distressing, I think we all have friends who would do the same. But, it
may have not been the most prudent thing to do - shoot the foreigner -
with your friends since they are congressmen and mayors. Even the
powerful Governor of Nueva Ecija has to sit in jail now because of a
similar incident.

But, anyway, has anyone reported if this "foreigner" was a white man? An
American, perhaps?

Schori should be deported for his deplorable actions. Racist or not, he
is pretty stupid to not know the politicians who are in his hotel,
especially if he ignores them! Foolish. Get him outta there! It's the
Manila Peninsula, there should be a Filipino managing the place anyway,
not just cleaning the rooms and the floors!

John,

Assuming you are serious in the above post, do you think that you have an
ounce of righteousness and justice and moral values in your body?

Do you really think that jusk kicking some American ass will do anyone any
good?

Do you think you can take an American Ass one on one?

Do you always need the help of your trusty gun?

Do you always need the help of your twin cousins?

Is this just a macho thing that I don't understand? Because if it is, I
am willing to learn. I just don't understand this American Ass Kicking
because you know, I am an American.

Why do you begrudge Americans so much? How can you stay in the United
States of America while begrudging Americans? Do you think you are being
fair and equal in your reportings?

Do you think these are the ideals which you will impart to your children?
Do you think that they will look at you with respect if you continue to do
so? Do you think others will respect you? Do you think anyone in scf is
amused by your writings?

I am concerned about this. Here I am trying to build a million points of
light, and there you are a black hole trying to suck up the light. It
makes me uncomfortable when people start talking about felony assault and
murder because this is America where one can just buy guns and bullets and
other nice assault rifles if you have the money.

Well, anyways, Meri Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family
John!

Woody, let me ask you something... Where is your proof that the mayor is
the local King of Corruption? Where is your evidence? Care to cite some
sources? Or are you just one of those bastards who just says what's on
his mind with no regard to the truth. I wish the mayor could sue your
butt for malicious slander.

Are you replying just because the white man is being deported from the
little resort island? Are you scared? Is it finally dawning on that
brain of yours that the world is not the united states? did you finally
realize that freedoms in the united states are not the same as in other
parts of the country?

Justice? You ask for justice? What has america done for the black
community? The government sanctioned slavery. Destroyed the history of a
race, destroyed the familial ties, destroyed the community relationships.
Blacks were promised freedom and equality in 1860!!! But through the
creative minds of the white man, they are oppressed even to this day.
Where is the 10 acres of land promised to every black family?

Justice? Just to show that the white man has justice in his mind, let's
see what he does for the native americans. He kills the spreads
throughout the west like a plague. He spreads diseases like measles. And
then, he shackles the indians into reservations. He takes their lands and
justifies that act by the words "taming of the west." Not content with
that, now, the white man wants to take away the reservations because he
wants to mine it. The Black Hills of Dakota tickle the white man's greed.

Justice? How about asians? Who built the railroads of the west? Who
died in the mountains as the railroad tracks were laid? But, the white
man then passed laws of discrimination and fear which were termed
immigration laws. The Chinese Exclusion Acts of the late 1800's and early
1900's prove to every single american that white man has no justice at all
in his mind.

You lump filipinos into one whole brown mixture. You should not be
surprised when colored people and the downtrodden blame the white man for
their lot in this world.

>You should be grateful that there are educated people who will even go
>to such a god forsaken country to work. They bring with them some
>semblance of culture and they may even help you add something to your

If culture includes men like you, then I would rather be swinging from a
mango tree. I would rather die a savage than become educated like you. I
would rather eat dirt than taste the bitterness of a lack of imagination
like the white man.

You wish to speak of culture? The culture of the white man has been that
of greed. From Columbus, to the British to the Dutch, all they ever
wanted was to exploit other markets and sell and cheat their way into
riches. This is the culture which you so gladly place in front of
everyone to admire. It is a culture which weakens the mind and the soul
of the very people it was supposed to benefit. It is a culture weak in
moral values and moral etiquette. The main basis for capitalism is
exploitation.

You make fun of our wooden spoons and forks. You have no right because
you don't have a mind to understand the relevance of the spoon and fork.
You have no idea that the spoon represents the ability to feed one's
family with rice, the major food source of the country. You have no idea
that the fork means the ability to supply vegetables and meat to the table
of your family. You have no idea what it means to be hungry and poor.
You have no idea what it means to eat rice and bagoong. You have no idea
of what suffering is really like. If you wish to judge something, then go
and see the world as it really is. Do not see the world from the comfort
of your couch and with the sound bites of CNN; see it while travelling.

If there was justice in this world, you would be reincarnated in your next
life as a filipino. You would be searching for scraps of food in the
basurahans of the towns. You would be crying at night because there is
pain in your stomach. You would be blinded by lack of Vitamin A. Yes, if
there was justice in this world, anyone who was a white man would spend a
lifetime with a colored skin.

>Yours is a very primitive and backward country. You really should hold
>in quiet esteem anyone from an advanced civilization who ventures to
>come there. You can learn much from them.

The word for you is fool. Just because someone is white does not mean
that he is advanced. Look in the mirror. You do not even see the
darkness within your soul. You do not even see the hatred within your
very face. How facile to judge other cultures when you do not have one
you can call your own.

Faulty statement:

- educated people don't behave the way this fellow did.

- the motivation for this fellow in going to the Philippines to work
there is money. It is not necessary for us to be grateful.
that we hire him and pay him to work there is enough.

More faulty statements:

- people of culture do not behave the way this fellow did.

- that you have concluded that our national treasures are comprised of big
carved wooden spoons and forks indicate that you know nothing of our
culture.

> Yours is a very primitive and backward country.

Yet more faulty statements:

- our country is neither rich nor powerful. it is, however, not primitive
and
backward. once more, your statement has indicated that you know nothing
of our country.

with all
the valor of true and absolute ignorance.

I call justice my dead uncle and dead cousin...

Both dead in a Japanese P.O.W. camp in your revered islands.

I do not excuse the actions of my forebearers.

But I never hear of this side of the issue from you...

but then, I'm sure you don't care.

All I hope is that someone from an advanced civilization

after listening to about 3 sentences, you would have to excuse
yourself, since your brain would be full.

MY TURN:

Above-proffered statements of SCFer Woodon <woo...@usa.net> appear to
be convincing proof as having been invoked by an individual who
apparently has extreme difficulties in contributing ANYTHING
substantial to issues under robust and vigorous discussion.

Total ignorance and complete incompetency in having even the minimal
requirements of objective comprehension on Filipiniana affairs, i.e.,
Ethnocentric elitism masquerading under the guise and charade of
First Amendment rights.

Even without dissecting the merits of your perspectives, your
statements are too pathetically callous and won’t even rate the
dignity of a response in a heatedly vibrant argumentation and debate.

Should you wish to disagree on my perspectives, my lawyer-friend and I

educated debate - in this forum.

Since I'm filipino, I wholeheartedly agree that Philippines has
plenty of culture. Our culture might be nothing to some other people, but
it's what we call our own. On the same note, I would not, could not say
or imply that the Swiss have none just because someone doesn't have all
the facts straight.

As for the above messages, I have to ask -- have we learned
nothing from history? I assume that you all would know something about
history since you're attempting to have cultural debate. All I'm saying
is from a foreigner's point of view, the native's ways are always deemed
inferior and the natives themselves are labeled uncivilized. It's called
cultural-centrism. Foreigners think that their way is best and it's in
the best interest of the natives to adapt to the others' cultures even
though the natives are perfectly happy with how they live.

Funny, but I don't think it would work. I just don't think it
would be very interesting enough to watch two people who don't even take
the time to find out the other's culture before hurtling into this debate
which would eventually become an impasse. Such a waste of time.

Lots of these kanos act like prima donnas and fuck you if you get in
their way. Even though its their fault. They look down on the local

They should be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law. These

With all this hype going on,

What needs to be remembered that the Filipinos have welcomed these peoples
to their shores.

In the beginning, Filipinos welcomed the Spanish (well, except for the
very enlightened Lapu-Lapu) and the Spanish conscripted and enslaved our
people for over 300 years.

Then, came the Americans who offered freedom and Filipinos embraced them
(except for Bonifacio and Aguinaldo who were executed). The Americans
denied independence and expanded their imperialism over the Philippines
for another 50 years. In the meantime, they killed 13 million Filipinos
during the Philippine-American War (and who said there wasn't another
Holocaust?).

So, I think that it would only be logical and understandable for Filipinos
to be wary of these "Cultured" people coming to it's shores anymore.

Be that as it may, I believe you and I agree that this persons actions

Let's be fair and objective in our analysis of this situation. Surely
you are not subscribing to the protectionism mentality favored by Pat
Buchannan. If I owned this hotel I would hire the best qualified legal
applicant weather they be Filipino, Black, White or Klingon, I think
you would do the same. But I would definitely reassess Mr. Schori
continued employment in this case.

Kage,

What in the world are you talking about?

Unfortunately, you have already assumed that we simply do not care about
your statement, but you have not left us with enough material to even
begin to understand what you are talking about.

Were they Japanese? Canadian? American?
What period of history was this?
What POW camp?

You will need to provide more information.

Thank you, I stand corrected!

Unfortunately for me, my knowledge of the life and times of Aguinaldo and

My apologies for these errors!

Woodon,

A Scot? You are a Scot? And you have a mouth like that?

I would have imagined that a Scot would have understood the meaning of
cultural, social and political tyranny over a peoples, especially with the
Scottish history of sub-servience under the British.

Certainly, you would think rude and brash thoughts if simply we were to
describe Scots as culturally lost individuals with only skirts to wear!
Why would you make any statement of the same ilk? Confounding!

JAMES LEE......Hmmmmmmm.....sound's like a Chinese name to me.

In Zamboanga City, back in high school in the mid-70's, I had a girl friend named Ruby Chua.
I must have been in second year. And I remember borrowing my younger brother's bicycle to visit
her each evening at their house usually after dinner.
For some reason I have not really bothered to give a deep thought why we split in less than a
year---until I read Mr. Lee's post (above).
My school chums (mostly seniors &very large one at that) would spend after classes hours
playing pool at nearby pool halls until it's dark to call it a day.
Sometimes when the group is pressed for money and desperate for that ESQ Tanduay drink---we
would march to the local Chinese high school (now called Chong Hua High School) and harass and
extort money from any student we catch outside the school premises which looked like a fort with
high concrete fences and steel doors.
On day, we caught up with a big fellow (skinny, but tall about 5'11") quietly eating his lunch
at a store across the street from the school.
Whoa! The group was ecstatic. "Sabroso ba, ha, chino bangkurit?" Taba asked the fellow
politely, his dimples showing---just like each time he gets pissed.
Taba and the rest of the group were big and almost all of them were *so* proficient in martial
arts (can you imagine the Chinese students running for their lives after each encounter?), the
chako, puniete and what-have-you.
I was this skinny twerp: about 5'1"weighing about 90 lbs and 13 years old.
But on this particular day, I got upset with Taba and the group.
"How can you do this?" I shouted at Taba as he was getting ready to strike the Chinese
student's hands (which we laid out on the table) with a nanchuck.
I positioned myself between the terrified student and Taba. I whisphered to him to get ready
to take off or run for his life.
I escorted him to the store's door and told him to run.
When he was gone, I turned my back on Taba and the group and scolded all of them.
"We all ought to be ashamed of ourselves," I sternly told them.
We never talked about the incident again.

FAST FORWARD TO 1996:
When I was eating dinner at a friend's seafood restaurant in Zamboanga City in May, I was
approached by a chubby and tall Chinese fellow.
"John Shinn!" he shouted, surprised at seeing me.
I didn't recognize the guy, but just the same I waved back at him.
He started approaching my table and extended his arms to shake mine. "Don't you remember me?"
he asked.
I said I was exhausted, but I was glad to see him again. "Can you please refresh my memory?" I
asked him.
"I'm Cesar T__ remember?" Remember in high school you came to my rescue against your own
friends while I was having my lunch break at the Chinese School?"
Now I remember....I told him.
Cesar recounted he was in town on a business trip and invited me to visit him in Basilan. We
exchangedbusiness cards and he left reluctantly.
I was to find out that Cesar has become a multi-millionaire managing his family's copra
business in the island.
Taba is now a major in the local police force. His men tell me Taba is very strict and has
very little patient for criminals.
The moral lesson of the story is to never underestimated someone, especially if they are
Chinoys---or Filipino-Chinese.
What the hell do we know that this JAMES LEE (the poster above) could be the son of the late
Bruce Lee.
And if it's true, Taba, myself and the rest of the group could be in big trouble this time....

P.S. --- Now I know why I split with Ruby Chua. After hearing from her classmates what I did
with Cesar in that store across their school that day---she decided she's had enough. When I
visited her at home that evening she asked me a serious question: "Who do you love more---me or
your friends?" tears streaming down her pinkish cheek.
I paused for a moment, lighted a cigarette and walked towards my brother's bike by the gate.
Without looking back at her, I muttered, "I'm sorry Ruby, but I think I love my friends more."
That was the last time I saw or heard from Ruby.

Dec. 25, 1996

Merry Christmas Mimi!

How can I get drunk with three bottles of Corona beer when in fact I used to consume a whole
bottle of Johnnie Walker Black?
Besides I've quit drinking. It was only during the meeting that I decided to drink beer. I
used to be an alcoholic, you know, But I'm proud to say that I've quit.
Look around you, how many Pinoys would admit that they're *alcoholics*?

Anyway, I'll be going (again) on a three-month photo and video expedition to the Philippines
in February and I'd like to invite you to come along to experience the adventure.
This invitation is only for you......

Happy New year,

John L. Shinn III
