HE'S A multi-millionaire many times over but it appears that presidential
candidate and movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. does not fancy the latest models in
luxury cars.
True, he has a veritable motorpool at his disposal: 11 vehicles at last count
registered in his name. But they are relatively old ones listed with the main
headquarters of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Quezon City.
The vehicles are under the actor's real name, Ronald Allan Poe.
The oldest vehicle in the list obtained by the Inquirer is a 1972 Mercedez Benz
with license plate number NDZ-580. The newest is a 1999-model Toyota Hi-Ace van
with license WGA-925.
Poe's most expensive car in the list is probably the 1998 Ford Lincoln
Navigator (WEP-237) whose latest model is priced at around three million pesos.
A check with Ford's Makati branch showed that such a model is not sold by local
dealers but has to be directly imported from manufacturers abroad. This jacks
up the Navigator's price due to importation costs.
Former starlet Laarni Enriquez, mistress of Poe's close friend disgraced
President Joseph Estrada, was said to be driving a Navigator.
Poe's second most expensive car in the list is perhaps the 1995 Ford Clubwagon,
the 2003 model of which costs 1.85 million pesos.
This 1995 model, according to Ford Makati, was not yet part of the company's
local dealership that year, and had to be imported.
Other than the two expensive Fords, the rest of Poe's vehicles listed at the
LTO are inexpensive considering the fortune the actor has made.
The actor has four vehicles released in the 1990s: a 1997 Toyota Camry
(URJ-309); a 1990 Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter (WGT-265); a 1992 Mercedez Benz 300SE
(TDW-820); and a 1993 Nissan (TGZ-770).
Poe also has a 1989 Nissan Patrol (PND-844), a 1989 Mitsubishi L-300 van
(PNV-253), and a 1978 Chevrolet Lazer (NSE-758).
According to an LTO official, Poe's Ford Clubwagon and Navigator and the 1992
Benz were registered at the LTO's Diliman office, the Camry and Patrol at the
LTO Camp Aguinaldo, Fuso Fighter at Pasay, 1993 Nissan at La Loma, 1972 Benz at
Manila-North, L-300 at Manila-East, Lazer at Caloocan, and the Hi-Ace van at
Mandaluyong.
The registrations of these vehicles, the official said, were renewed yearly at
the LTO branch in San Juan.
I wonder how many cars are registered under her wife's name?
