I've traveled to the P.I. before for 2 short visits, and enjoyed it
very much. Pay phones are hard to find but it seems like most people
on the street have cell phones.
I'm using a Motorola V170R cell phone here in the USA, which TracFone
provided free when I paid for a year of airtime and 440 domestic
minutes. When I go for my next visit, can I have the U.S. SIM card
replaced in the P.I. with one that will allow me to use it there?
Approximately how much would the SIM card and 60 minutes prepaid
airtime cost?
I know about as much as you so I should probably keep my mouth
shut...but...I can't.
Cell phone don't really cost that much...you can pick up a used one for 20
or 30 bucks unless you want features...you can get chatting for about 40
bucks - if you shop right. Most of the time I would just ask to borrow a
phone and pay the person for the use of his phone, or put a 'load' on his
phone for some airtime and the owner would have the left over minutes...
Many internet cafes make phone calls to the states for about oh....10 or 15
peso a minute ...if you are just calling home to check in....
On my next trip I am just going to buy a phone and be done with it. I have
Cingular and their phones are...ummm.....er...'proprietary?' - which means
they can't be used on any other network regardless of the sim card...

Assuming the Motorola V170R is a GSM phone, then in theory you should
be able to replace the SIM with a local one in the Philippines.
The problem is if you got the phone for free from TracFone then its
almost certainly locked to their network and you wouldn't be able to
use the phone with any other SIM card. You will need to speak to
TracFone about getting the phone unlocked.
