SENATORS PROBE NUDE RUFFA, DONITA NET PICS
Manila, Oct. 7, 1998 - Ruffa Gutierrez and Donita Rose, who are shown
in all their naked glory in photos published on the Internet, have
taken the matter with a more or less cavalier attitude. But the
pictures offended members of the Philippine Senate, who will not let
the matter just slip by unchallenged.
Senators Ramos Magsaysay Jr. and Miriam Santiago want the Department
of Foreign Affairs to take drastic action against the Internet
publication of photos showing naked Filipino actresses. Local website
developers will be questioned to determine if they had a hand in the
display of the nude pictures.
Magsaysay is urging President Estrada to file a protest against
countries where the sex websites originate.
Santiago wants Philippine laws on obscenity and pornography updated
to catch up with the technology of Cyberspace.
"We should uphold the dignity of the victims and protect the public,
particularly the young, from the proliferation of sexually explicit
materials on the Internet," Santiago said.
Aside from Donita and Ruffa, actors Aga Muhlach and Diether Ocampo
have also been "victimized" by nude photo purveyors on the Worldwide
Web.
All four movie stars deny that they posed for the pictures, and
suspect that their faces have been "morphed" with other people's
naked bodies.

I know this is off the cuff, but aren't they (actresses) in the public-domain
already by *ahem* virtue of their vocation line-of-business? Doesn't their
personas project "SEX?" Hmmm. Philippine legistlators amuse me to no end! And
with some -real- serious problems having gripped the Philippines, some are ready
willing and able to throw the full-weight and authority of Congress, government,
as well as the -law- into rounding up a bunch of Webmasters & SYSOPS in the
Philippines! LOL! : ) )
Are they dense? Don't they see that these 'morphed' images of famous 'objects'
are technological works-of-art, -IF- in fact this were the case? But given the
the lifestyle of a many number of celebrities, is enough to make one hold a
skeptical 'eye.' Obscene and immoral? Perhaps to many.
Yet, more notably these legislators who've seem to have nothing better to
complain about. But perhaps some are of the same limited frame-of-mind who see
the Venus de Milo, the -famous- and admired armless statue of a 'nekkid woman
<http://pw1.netcom.com/~jsemrau/venus.jpg> as just another sick joke, too?

What a waste of time and yet they don't give a damn of prosecuting those
illegal recruiters who exploited the innocense of young women that are brought
abroad to be abused. What can an internet does harm to them anyway? Do these
Senators have seen fabricated photos of Bill and Lewinsky making sex in the
white house? Bullshit...these two women are whores anyway so where is the beef?
Are these two from the group that went to Brunei a few years back to screw the
Sultan?

Um. Yes they can ...They can start a discriminating witch-hunt : (

It is indeed 'sad,' and I don't think there are any clear-cut answers to your
question. However, there therein lays the rub. It's the 'citizenry' of the
Philippines who, for the most part 'allow' it to happen by virtue of their vote
(or lack thereof), and apathy when thoughtless/brainless legislation such as
this floored and voted upon. Nevertheless, the form of government in and of the
'Republic' is indeed democratic, yet for it to last this long is without doubt
an accomplishment in and of itself - Given the horrors and tragedies which have
challenged such an endeared nation.
The manner in which these solons and lawmakers come up with hare-brained,
and half-baked arguments, and ideas reminds me of a recent thread regarding
belching and decrepit buses plying the EDSA ...'They just keep going, and
going and going' ...And it's to the ingenuity (both) that keeps them running
is nothing short of a miracle, or marvel to behold : )
Ah. But my take on this and what it comes down to is 'attitude.' The
Filipino-take on all this, when it comes to issues involving crime, poverty,
corruption, politics, worthless-legislation et al. is one that appears aloof,
and it shows in their lawmakers. Case in point: I've an uncle who no longer
votes simply because he has given up on the 'system.' We'd go at it with other
relatives for hours (over a few cases Sn. Miguel), with me offering whatever
smidgen of optimism I can muster, but his general reply to me would be, 'Diri
na bali ...Waray naman kabilingan.' Moreover, when blatant and grave injustices
occur, or when inefficiency of gov't fails time and time again, my feeling is
that many here have come to accept that this is 'just the way it is.' Sad,
hindi ba?
Yes. It comes down to perspective, and attitude. Change this, and possibly
it could tremendously change & benefit the Philippines in the future ...It
worked to some degree with regard to SCF in the form of a single post (op cit.
'unpleasant newsgroups'), and it's sobering effect was indeed felt. Hmmm.
An unprecedented soci-political come-benevolent cataclysm? Hmmm, what would
it take? Maybe ...perhaps the same could happen to the Philippines, and maybe
an 'attitude adjustment' could affect by those who could make a difference in
the Philippines: Her people
My time is up ...Regards.

Majority of people (anywhere) are complacent. Do you remember the same
happening here in the US? but there's a slight difference here, there are
greater number of people surfing the net here. So there's greater protest.
You can't take the fun out of people's plate, this is a cause for real
revolt.

Yeah - this is a FAQ asked by balikbayans and foreigners - "How could you
have voted for Erap?" or (fill in name of inept politician here). My standard
reply is "Look, I voted for Roco, not Erap. I personally can't stand him. But
this is a democracy, Joe." And then I turn on CNN and watch the US Congress
go about its impeachment hearings :)
