Anyone, anybody, everybody: please send me a picture of this Filipina
actress. Thanks.

This has nothing to do with her ordeal, I promise you that.

Hindi. My dad claimed to have been her ex-boyfriend. Pissed my mom off
big time. She's still pissed today. I just want to add fuel to the
fire. :)

Try to contact Insular Life Assurance Co. Ltd., in Makati,
Philippines. I do know they have a website.

Maggie de la Riva worked as an underwriter (life insurance
agent) with that insurance company, for many, many years.
And was consistently a top notch career life underwriter.
I am sure they have many pictures there. Circa mid-60's.
The Ayala Group of companies, which owned Insular Life
during those years also have a "library/archive" that might
have some old pictures of Maggie de la Riva...as recipient
of many sales awards.

DSP,

Just remembered, one man who I am sure would have a lot of
pictures of Maggie de la Riva is : Primitivo Reyes ("Tibo").
He was the one who recruited her. And I do remember seeing
many, many pictures of the two during sales award
ceremonies.

It has been years and I don't know if he is still alive.
But I am sure, Insular Life would also have a file on this
man as he was an Assistant Vice President or Vice President
of the Company. And the Ayala group has a policy of
keeping a complete "biography with pictures" on file of all
their "senior executives", on file in the Ayala Archives.
Ayala Corporation also has a website.

Maybe you can ask Steven Roach for network assistance as he
is based in Manila, I understand.

Hope all these help you in your quest.

MY TURN:

RE: MAGDALENA "Maggie" DE LA RIVA
Aspiring Actress; Abduction and Rape Victim
June 26, 1967

In "People of The Philippines, Plaintiff-Appellee VERSUS
Jaime Jose, Basilio Pineda Jr., Eduardo Aquino and Rogelio
Canal, Defendants-Appellants, et al." G.R. No. L-28232
promulgated February 6, 1971, the Philippine High Tribunal
in a Per Curiam Resolution affirmed the death penalty previously
imposed by a lower Court for the crime of Forcible Abduction
with Rape perpetrated and consummated against Ms. Magdalena
"Maggie" de la Riva.

Sentences were effected despite frantic last-minute pleas by the
convicted rapists and / or their respective families to the
Office of The President (Ferdinand E. Marcos, then Malacanang
Occupant). In short, the four convicted rapists got ***TOASTED,
CHARRED and BARBEQUED*** by thousands of electrical voltage !!!
They got the ***HOT SEAT*** after having had their naturally bullish
***HOTS*** and raging, unquenchable testosterone levels at the
wee hours of dawn ...

At the time of the incident, June 26, 1967 Magdalena "Maggie"
De la Riva was 25 years old; single; having graduated from
HS in 1958 at Maryknoll College; also finished the Secretarial
course from St. Theresa's College. A movie actress by profession,
she was receiving PP8000 per movie; for part-time Radio-TV
performances - pay scales of PP800 monthly in permanent shows;
PP300 monthly for live promotional shows and from PP100 - PP200
per appearance as guest in other shows.

Forcibly abducted by Pineda in front of her house gate at
about 0430 HRS. after getting off from the ABS Studios in
Roxas Boulevard earlier, she was then brought to seedy
SWANKY MOTEL in Pasay City where she was repeatedly raped
by her captors. After her ordeal, Maggie was dropped by said
rapists at about 0600 HRS. in front of the Free Press Building
close to EDSA and Channel 5 TV stations. Reaching home about
0630 HRS. she recounted her harrowing ordeal to her mother who
nervously awaited her return together with, and in the presence
of, her brother-in-law, several PC officers, policemen and
media personnel previously alerted by Maggie's maid who
witnessed the criminal abduction earlier.

Four days after the criminal incidents, Maggie filed a
criminal complaint against her rapists. During medico-legal and
physical examinations of the victim by an NBI physician, suspect
Jaime Jose was apprehended and thereafter positively identified
by the victim as one of her abductors / rapists. Jaime Jose
then signed a confession and implicated his co-conspirators.
Consequently, Pineda and Canal were apprehended in Lipa City
on July 1, 1967; Aquino was caught in Batangas four days
afterwards.

Their respective pleas of "Not Guilty" and / or "Guilty"
entered, bench trial ensued on merits before the Court of
First Instance of Rizal, Judge San Diego presiding.
At trial, said suspects were found guilty as charged in
the criminal complaint in violation of Article 335 of
The Philippines' Revised Penal Code, as amended, with the
supreme penalty of death imposed. Hence, the automatic
review on Certiorari by the High Court.

The High Tribunal, after a careful consideration of points
of error raised by the defendants - appellants, found
NO reversible error committed as to the findings of facts
by the CFI but disagreed with the lower court's ruling of
only a SINGLE death penalty imposed. Citing previous
rulings (e.g., People vs. Escares, 55 O.G. 623; US vs. Balaba,
37 Phil. 260; People vs. Peralta, L-19060) The Philippine
Supreme Court NOT only affirmed the death penalty imposed
by court A QUO (CFI, Rizal) but also imposed ***M-U-L-T-I-P-L-E***
death sentences against the Defendants - appellees as well
based on the legal principle of ".one information / complaint;
one imposable sentence ."

The rest is history. If my declining memory still serves me
right, the final execution of the sentences imposed was
extensively covered by local and international media. A local
journalist gave detailed blow-by-blow account of events and
very timely interviews with highly-connected officials; thus,
rightfully receiving high audience ratings.

'Ika nga nila, 'em rapists got what they deserved . !!!

Manong Ben:

Excellent recount. And none of the important details
omitted. No, your memory is keener than ever before. I
posted elsewhere that I covered this story as a novice at
the Free Press, back then. And your recollection of the
case is amazing.

Let me add just a bit of trivia. Basilio Pineda, Jr.
nicknamed "Boy" was the son of a Pasay City Police. I
can't remember if he eventually became the Chief of Police
during that time. Anyway, Boy as I remember him was not a
particularly "mischievous" kid in the block. My family
owned a tailoring and haberdashery shop along F.B. Harrison
then, near Our Lady of Sorrows Church. And Boy and his
family owned the corner store (pimble machines and all)
right at the corner (two doors away from ours). His
sister "Baby" terrorized the neighborhood with her temper
and she was seen beating Boy many times, and in public.

Boy also was beaten up often and badly by another fellow -
Jayjay McPheran...who incidentally is a nephew of Cristina
Kastan~er, the "ex-wife" of Johnny Ponce Enrile, Senator.
Johnny, on the other hand used to visit Cristina who lived
across the street from us...and Johnny also had his share
of fights with the local thugs...because of "Tisay Beauty".

As for Judge (a.k.a. "hanging judge" - with a cause, I'd
say) Lourdes San Diego...her son "Ting" was also an
underwriter of Insular Life and a good friend of Maggie.

At some point, the lives and paths of all these people
crossed, because of Jaime Jose...ex La Salle Boy's hideous
crime.

At some point, too, all the "influence peddlers" made their
appeals to Apo Ferdinand...This is where, the ex-dictator,
for all that he was and did...this was one time, he drew
the line....NO PARDON....

Erap should learn a lesson from this. BTW, Manong Ben, do
you remember the members of the Low Waist Gang of Erap and
where they are right now in government? (if any?)

And speaking of "tisay beauty", finally, Maria Christina
Castan~er certainly was one. Maggie de la Riva indeed was
a graceful and gracious mestiza beauty...And if I may say
so, so was the lady beside you in the picture.....hehehehehe

;) :)

As I recall, not all of them horny and sadistic bastards (another term had
to be coined after they made the headlines because "walang hiya" was too
good for them) got what they deserved. One or two of them died in Munti
from an overdose of vaseline hair tonic<?> a few months before they were
scheduled to be toasted. I remember seeing Jose's picture in the news with
his hair shaved on his way to the chair, so I do not think it was him.
(Hmmm...I will need to use a lifeline on this one.)

Mang Ben, as usual your nearly flawless memory stirred some of my
cobweb-filled ones. Thanks for the recount. Almost reminded me of Mga
Kwento Ni Lola Basiang...only the cyber version is Mang Ben. Thanks again
kabayan.

And PusongPinoye2, another one with a wide-ranging field of knowledge and
contacts. You obviously have the contacts that creates tycoons back in the
motherland. Thanks for sharing names and info unselfishly and adding value
to this NG.

I look forward to reading your points of view all the time. Both of you
make it worth surfing around all the other garbage. (Can someone explain to
me why intelligentsia and ilustrados like these two leave Pinas?)

Its all about the Uncle Bens. Just out of curiosity, since I wasn't even born
when the Maggie incident occurred, is Maggie de La Riva the same person as
Marianne de La Riva?

-------------
No, babe. Marianne is from a younger generation than Maggie. Marianne is
probably in her mid-40's today whilst Maggie is close to 60. Mariane's
(ex)-hubby is Ronald Corveau. They met and fell in love during their casting
in the long-running Gulong ng Palad (Palm Tyres) 70s Tele-drama series
(co-starring with veteran actress Caridad "Inday" Sanchez and current
teenage heartthrob Romnic Sarmenta).

Marianne is a drop-dead Indian (Bombay) beauty whereas Maggie is definitely
a Euro beaut. What about you, babe? Are you a meztisa, morena, kayumanggi or
negra? <wink>

Bwahahahaha...negra...bwahahahaaa...Ok, she's a Virata and Bautista combined.
The Bautistas' in Cavite are fine looking people where I believe she got her
looks. For example, her Tito Ramon Revilla (buwa ka ng ina actor/senator) is a
Bautista. Unfortunately he only got good looks but no brains (hehehehehe).
But Joy Virata I believe did not get her brains from the Bautistas but from the
Viratas who have brains but no good looks naman. Therefore, she's a
beauty-and-brains kind of babe, ha,Kuya JT? How about inviting her in
Alt.Pst.Hoy, egroups and aol IM, where the babes participating are just like
her. e.g. poissonivvy ala selma hayek, pennyrichter ala ruffa gutierez, anap
ala merle fernandez of 'UHAW' <wink>, vina aka lola mae still in
honeymoon(bagong bunot palagi), Jhade who is currently studying human anatomy
especially of men and many others. Sige kuya JT, imbitahin mo na si JV...

I think she still lives in the same neighborhood of my parents and sister. Her
kids and my sister's used to be friends and that was over ten years ago.
