Hiya,

Kinuwento sa akin ng lola ko na may uri ng isdang umiiyak doon sa Bisaya. Hindi
niya natatandaan ang pangalan niyon. Ano ang tawag doon? Ang lakas daw umiyak.

Maybe the fish your grandma saw was one of those Christmas-song-singing,
side to side swaying toy fish sold in JC Penney and other stores during
Christmas.

I could not follow this exchange, so for the beck of it, I put it into an
online multi-language translator, tagalog to english selected. Here is the
URL

http://tranexp.com:2000/InterTran

The original text was:

Bisaya. Hindi niya natatandaan ang pangalan niyon. Ano ang tawag doon? Ang
lakas daw umiyak.

The computer English result was as follows:

Shame , Kinuwento toward my of lola ko na have quality of fish umiiyak there
toward Potency. Not her natatandaan the behalf coconut. What the beck there?
The vitality daw weep

LOL. No, but she did buy one

Actually, her father called her this when she cried a lot when she was young.
She just remembers the "Para kang" part... hehe

Terrible translation!
Hiya,(hi ya!=English for hi you)
The real translation would be:
My grandmother told me that there is a fish that cries. She can't remember the
name. What is its name? She says it cries profusely.

---------------
The translation is awful because Chris' Tagalog is WORSE THAN AWFUL.

The correct Tagalog text should have been written as follows:

Kumusta kayo! Kinuwento ni Lola na may uri raw ng isdang umiiyak doon sa
Kabisayaan. Hindi niya matandaan ang ngalan nito. Alam ba ninyo ang ngalan
noon? Malakas daw umiyak iyong isda.

I fed it to that website and the results:

Withdraw fabric! Kinuwento ni Lola na have quality raw of fish umiiyak there
toward Kabisayaan. Not her ancient the behalf its. Myth ba ninyo the behalf
then? Forceful daw weep it fish.

HEAVENS TO BETSY! It's even worse!!! Goes to prove that translation sites
need lotsa work to do!

The Babe Magnet(tm) translation would be:

How are you all! Grandma tells me that there's a species of fish in the
Visayas which can cry. She can't recall the name. Do you know the name for
this fish? She says it cries loud.

The 'talakitok' a sea-water fish, wails or cries when
caught. Its a blackish colored fish, flat and quite
spiny. It's delicious, though and quite expensive.

In fishponds, you'll notice it. Once caught, it emits a wailing-
like noise. Noon, hinde ko makain iyan kasi parang tao umiyak. But
But I've gotten used to it, since it's real delicious when broiled
with toyo and calamansi.
