In 2 months I will be turning in my petition for the Degrees of Freemasonry.
Here is a quote by General Emilio Aguinaldo, Filipino Hero:
"I am closing my address with a confession.
Since becoming a Freemason, I forgot hate. Instead, I learned to love - to
love God and my fellowman. I am now at ease with my own conscience. I only
do what I think is right, and shun all evil. I also forget fear. I can be
alone no matter where I am, what I do, or where I go.
A clean conscience makes a man brave. I hope that Freemasonry has had the
same influence upon all of you, which is an assurance of a better world to
live in, and a happier humanity to live with."
How insightful huh? I know at least one of you is a Mason. The role
Freemasonry has played in the Philippines is significant. I am looking
forward to joining the world's oldest and best Fraternity.
Later,
Azmik
P.S. don't even try to persuade me not to join :)
Azmik,

As you may be aware, while membership in the Craft does hold many attractions,
many Filipinos otherwise favorably disposed to joining are hesitant to do so -
given the Catholic Chruch's stance on Freemasonry.
Could you please shed some light on this ? Also, could you list names (and
confirming sources, if possible) of prominent Catholics who were also
Freemasons ? Some have claimed that even an American Cardinal (Spellman, I
think) and many other high clergymen were members.

Far from discouraging you, I, among others would like to encourage you
and support you in this undertaking you have begun. You, well into
your journey in this road of life, are moving on.
No doubt, we in SCF are "...confident of this, that he who began a
good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of
Chirst Jesus"(Philippians1:6).
Keeping in mind that the Craft is not an end to itself but a means to
assist us in our journey, our pilgrimage of life, our pilgrimage of
trust, our pilgrimage of faith.
Best of luck and God's blessings be favored on you.

I have been wanting to turn in my petition for the longest time. Now that I
have a steady job (stable income), I am ready to become a brother. I know
it won't be no cakewalk but I will try my best. I want to follow in the
steps of the Filipino heros and others in joining the Fraternity that "Makes
good men better...". To meet with others of different backgrounds and
ethnicities "On the level...". I wanted to join a fraternity in college
Alpha Phi Omega (National Service Fraternity, also popular in the
Philippines) but my schoolwork prevented me from pursuing this. My uncle is
one of the founding fathers of APO in Saint Luis University, Baguio.
Again, thanks for the words of encouragement. Rat, if you join your local
lodge we may someday meet, as brothers.
Peace,
AZMIK

When I was in college, the pressure of joining APO was there primarily because
my dad and uncle founded the PI Chapter of APO (UST). However, I found that some
members of the fraternity are not worth being my fraternity brother (at least in
UP). That discouraged me. However, I have respect for the fraternity having
produced two presidents, Fidel Ramos and Bill Clinton, as well as an astronaut
of the Apollo mission - not to forget my dad and uncle and also my godfather,
who is now in the US.
Cheers!

Yes. I am not sure where he joined it - maybe Uni. of Illinois. BTW, so is Bill
Clinton. =)
I remember APO's initiation rites in UP as being particularly colorful -
candidates were required to streak across the AS (main) building in Diliman
stark naked.
On the matter of Fiipino Freemasonry, again, it is said that President
Ferdinand Marcos sought membership in the Craft, but for some reason did not
end up joining. Can someone shed light on this ?

He might have joined it during his U. of Illinois days then. I know because my
dad gets updated as to the activities of the APO specially with such a member as
the President of the Philippines (ex).

Aha! The famous Oblation Run done on their anniversary, Dec. 16.

Really? Well, I think Macoy is a member of Upsilon, UP's homegrown fraternity.
I'd also like to clarify something about Freemasonry - apparently one has to
apply for membership, one is not "invited". Is this so ?

Nope. AFAIK, he got it from the US.
