Hi people. whassup...I'm J.P. Recently I went to the Philippines to
visit my relatives. I first I didn't want to go. But later, I fell in
love with my homeland. Life was good there. The best part was the night
life. There were barely any restrictions on teenagers. (I'm 16! and I got
to do what ever I wanted.) It was so0ooo fun. I realized that the PI was
the place to be. The brings me to my question. Which of these colleges
(La salle, Ateneo or UP) is the best. Please rank them in order and tell
me what are the strong points. I plan to stay there for atleast one year
and then transfer to a school back in the states. I want to be involved
in the Music industry, so is there division which concentrates on music in
any of those schools? Thanks a bunch, and please reply to the newsgroup
ONLY. Please do not E-mail. If you do.....e-mail at ANDC...@aol.com

P.S. Sorry for the mispellings and the gramatical errors....I'm doing
this a 4 AM.
P.S.S. HEY JOEL DISINI...its me J.P. Capulong. I don't know if you
remember us. We are friends with Tita tita in CA. Your step sisters told
me that we could find you in this newsgroup. Just wanted to say
HIIII!!!!!!!! sooo "HI!!!!!!"

Gee, what's with this UP and Ateneo remain tops BS???!?? I can tell you that
depending on what you're taking any of the 3 mentioned schools are very good.
Excluding La Salle just indicates you've been talking to too many Atenistas

As far as education goes, UP and Ateneo remain tops in the Philippines, but getting in to these schools is tough.
As far as music is concerned, I don't know if Ateneo or La Salle have any Music programs. Ateneo has one of the best Glee clubs in the world (or at least they used to). Your best bet would probably be the UP Conservatory of Music.

I don't know if this is important to you, but I find the location of
Ateneo and UP Diliman more conducive to studying than La Salle (what
with Taft traffic, smog, etc).
Between Ateneo & UP Dil - personally I like Ateneo because there are
much less students, and you can get to know other students and your
teachers pretty well. Everything seems more personal - in a big
school like UP Dil things seem more bureacratic and institutional.
OTOH, UP's College of Music is pretty famous - I don't know if
Ateneo has an equivalent. You might consider another UP campus
too - like UP Los Banos or UP Baguio.

Here's the story (I heard this when I was a student at U.P.)

A teacher asked three students a question. One was from La Salle, one from
Ateneo and the third from UP. The question was: What is two plus three?

The student from Ateneo said ( with a "sosyal" accent): Too Plas Tree
Eekwals Five.

The student from UP said (with a "poor man's diction): Tow plas trey
akwals payb.

The student from La Salle said ( with an exaggerated slang): Chu plash
Thwee eekwalls four.

The lesson: UP students are poor but answer correctly. Ateneo students are
rich and answer correctly. La Salle students are rich but give the wrong
answer.

I once attended a party in Manila. I met there students from La Salle,
Ateneo and UP.
"c'mon let's all dance."

U.P. students are trained to use their brains,
Ateneans are trained to use their tongues (never met
so many talkers before) and La Salle students are taught
morality and how to make money. OK?

When I first read this thread, I was ready to go to war to defend my
stand and school. I went to La Salle Taft for 4 years and must say
that I didn't regret a moment of it! If I had to do all over again, I
would.

I anticipated the types of threads and sure enough out came the jokes
and thrashing about almost on cue, so predictably. Fun to read but I
think these people all missed the point: you want advise about where
your future should lie not who likes to dance and eat and sing. Not
about who can add to 5 or 4 or whatever. All that shows is a lack of
understanding and comprehension. Bashing is fun to do but in
hindsight it surely is not 20/20 because it leads absolutely nowhere!

You don't need advise about partying, it's a moot point as far as you
are concerned. You can do all the partying without being advised to
do so, am I right?

When I went to school, DLSU went from the semestral to the tri-mestral
school year. I knew of very active Guilds that dealt in the arts
i.e., Drama (of which I was a part of), poetry and even a Debate
Society (if memory serves me right...). I did not know of an offering
in music, which is what I think you want to pursue. I wish I could
offer you more. DLSU has a web page by the way, look it up using Alta
Vista or a verbose search engine. It could give you some more insight
that neither I nor (seemingly) anyone else can provide (yet) on this
forum.

Either way, Ateneo, UP, La Salle, yes and UST, I must say that the
education you should receive from these schools will be excellent if
you apply yourself. Affiliations abound as well with La Salle being
tied to the Chriatian Brother's St. Mary's schools and The Ateneo
being affiliated with the Jesuits' Loyola Marymount (and other Loyola
instutions). I am unaware of any State-side affiliations that UP or
UST might have. What this means to you is that it could open further
opportunities after college should you graduate from one of the above.

I tell you what, when you graduate and wish to pursue further
education, look no further than AIM (Asian Institute of Management).
Now that's a great school!!! Know why? My brother Jess is the Dean of
that school!

He was, by the way, a graduate of De La Salle Taft!!! ;-)

Hey, I'm from UP, and, believe me, we don't think we're better than
everyone else. It's everyone else who thinks we're better than they are.
As for having a problem with our brains, guess what they called a fly
they found inside a La Sallite's head? A SPACE INVADER! (Okay, okay, so
it used to be an Atenean joke. But what the heck, a La Sallite is just
an Atenean drop-out, right?)

Did you? Do it over again, I mean.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I won't quote the entire piece (which consists
mostly of defending La Salle's honor anyway), but there are a couple of
little things that might mislead the honest folks out there who are
seriously considering pursuing a grand education in the Philippines.

1. Bashing IS a lot of fun. Of course, you have to make sure you're in
the right team because being bashed, as the gentleman I quoted above must
be feeling, is no better than going thirsty while surrounded by seawater.
The schools have always been going at it - it adds to the school spirit,
and, better yet, the anti-school, or what's more popularly called the
"competitive", spirit. What's sad is when there just isn't anything to
jibe your rival schools about. If you followed the previous threads, you
know what I mean. And if you still choose to go to these schools, a
certain amount of good sportsmanship is needed (they seem to need it very
badly, too).

2. You really should know better than to post such an inspiring subject
in this newsgroup. The best thing to do is to write to each of the
schools for forms and brochures, THEN ask for specific questions. Asking
for "What's the best school" in an open forum is an invitation to war.
It was fun reading all those old jokes again, though. Thanks!

3. As for school affiliations ... hmmm. I don't really want to say this
but, for those UP graduates out there, did anyone have a hard time
getting into grad school in the US? Unless the UP system had been
putting us through a self-serving propaganda, I do believe that UP
graduates stand a very good chance of being accepted in grad school. You
can probably ask the UP registrar for statistics, if they have any.

I can't find the original post, but I remember you wanting to get into
music. The UP and UST Conservatories have a tradition for excellence in
music instruction. You might want to inquire there, as many have already
suggested. The other thing you might want to consider is the location of
the school: UP and Ateneo are in a less crowded neighborhood than UST
and La Salle. That's probably a subject where a lot of people can give
you advice about.

Finally, in case you should go to one of the more "emotional" schools
whose students find it to be their duty to physically, at times, defend
the school spirit, there is a Chinese proverb that might prove to be
useful: "He who swings the first blow admits that his arguments have run
out." And, if you still go to these schools but are not inclined to have
your corporeal self placed in a traumatic situation, avoid the basketball
games altogether. I think everyone will agree to that.

Good luck and have fun.

U.P. would be the best school...by default, because it is the only
university among the 3 you mentioned that has a school of music. BTW, you
should also look into which courses will be credited when you come back to
the U.S.

Having said that, being involved in the music industry is a very wide
criteria. You can be an accountant, an engineer, a lawyer, a programmer,
etc. working within the music industry. In which case, each of those
universities you mentioned would have an advantage over the other depending
on the discipline you are interested in pursuing. I agree with the other
poster that location is also something you should definitely consider.
Good luck!

Well, not exactly. La Salle was (and still is)a good Medical school but
there were others that were better. Columbia Presbyterian College of
Medicine is one of them.So I transferred. And don't worry about my

Having been raised and having received my BA here in the US, I went back
to the Philippines to work on an MA. My area of interest was linguistics
and I wanted to do research on Philippine languages; therefore, what
better place to to study than where the data is. I was admitted at UP and
I was to enroll after a two-year volunteer work in VietNam.

To make a long story short, I ended up studying in the Ateneo.

Being American raised I must say one of the best things I got out of my
grduate education in the Philippines was the friends and contacts I made
while there. (I would venture to say that I could have gotten the same
kind of relationships in any other school, having cross enrolled at other
schools as part of a consortium project between Ateneo and other
universities in the area.) Many of those friends and contacts are now
among the movers and shakers of the Philippine economy and government.
Whenever they are here in the US we get together; often times they spend
the night at the house between destinations. When in the Philippines we
have a hard time scheduling everyone who wants to host my family. The
last time we were there, we never got our hotel bill; the hotel is owned
by someone I had known in school.

My public advice to the original poster is to choose the school that
offers the course of study he is interested in. And make as many friends
as you can. I have other pieces of advice based on my personal
experience; e-mail me if your're interested.

I believe that it is never on what school you are studying or what school
you graduated from. i believe that it depends solely on the person. if
you really want to be good in whatever field you are you will be. no
school can make a person who hates his field be good at it.

I hope I gave you something else to think about other than schools per se

I don't know about yours, but my Alma Mater, the Ateneo de Manila, still thinks about
its graduates. I still get copies of the "Alumni Guidon", our school's magazine
dedicated to its graduates. That's quite impressive considering I've been living in the
US for the past 10 years.

I compare this question to: which is better Tuesday, Wednesday, or
Thursday? Obviously, if your boss is from La Salle, then La Salle is best.
If his boss is from Ateneo, then Ateneo is best... makes sense? :-)

Don't laugh... it's reality.

Just so you know, I have never missed an issue of Alumnews from DLSU since
moving to the States almost three years ago and I get regular e-mail from
the University about things that goes on there.

Butch, DLSU is hosting this year's UAAP competition and publishes
up-to-the-minute team standings and scores in http://www.dlsu.edu.ph/~uaap/

>Sino ba ang nananalo sa UAAP?

Last Saturday's results, La Salle 77 - Ateneo 69. DLSU now 3-0.

Nasa internet kasi tayo, eh. I can't see we have any other options
besides to use words. But a good point nonetheless. What do you propose
to do about it then? Uuwi ka ba sa Pilipinas? O kaya, habang walang

It's just a way to catch up on all the alaskahan that goes along with any
gatherings of Philippine alumni. The Ateneo/La Salle rivalry had been
going on forever, and the jokes have become legendary. The "jokes"
meaning the guys from La Salle and Ateneo.

I guess that makes the UP guys "jokers." =)

Are you not disgusted with the kind of posts on SCF?

What I remember about these universities,

Bay Area.
daan. Wala kaming pinipili. Samasama kaming mga Atenista, La Sallista, taga-UP, o
taga anumang paaralan sa Pilipinas o dito sa Estados Unidos. Maaari ninyong bisitahin
ang aming tahanan sa internet sa http://www.magecs.com/days/
