there is an oversupply of physicians in the Philippines. It is not unusual to see Pinoy
MD's working as paramedical personnel in other parts of the world. If they think that the
US is the place to go, forget it. The door is shut for foreign docs.

Well it's not exactly closed, but it is getting quite difficult...I can
tell you from experience. But I do know a couple doctors of other
nationalities that are pumping gas in New Jersey 'cause they can't get into
a residency!

I'm not in the medical profession, but I can echo your lament on the
state of employment of doctors/nurses here in the US. I have many
friends from high school whom I care about. They have decided to take
up med school only to find out later how difficult it is to get into
residency. The more fortunate ones eventually do, but not without a
lot of sweat and pride-swallowing. The less fortunate, well, they're
still struggling.
I've heard stories of honor students and top-rated doctors coming into
the US who had to content themselves with working as orderlies or
techinicians. Some are able to move up, but some can't. Perhaps
there is some truth to the rumor that the AMA wants to control the
supply of medical professionals for some reason. That's just a silly
thought. :-)
When health care was in Washington's agenda, I was hoping the issue of
medical professionals' lot would come up.

In RP, a licensed practioner can easy practice (specially in the
country-side) with only
a stetoscope, table, chair, and a piece of paper to be employed. The
trouble with
most doctors in RP is that they see their profession as a ticket to
instant millions i.e.
if they got the change to be in US.

You're not the only country doing this, Australia (and a lot of others I
think) are doing same. At least you're only producing your own, we're
stupidly doing that *and* importing more from other countries as well.
Problem is, half of those doctors immigrating here can't pass the
exams - I don't think Filipinos are amongst them though.
